G-Money
Hi, im a freshman in high school and have been collecting 2600 games for not quite a year. I have about 70 different games (lots of doubles). Ill go to a thrift store and see a pile of games, grab em before someone else does, and pay about $.60 per game. I dont care about boxed games because i just play, so i was wondering if you guys could give me an idea about the maximum i should pay for a game and if you could name any fun games i should keep an eye out for. Thanks.
Fretwobbler
Buy anything made by Activision. you wont go far wrong then for playability. As for price just pay as much as you happy too. Adam
Adrian M
Pay what you can comfortably afford to spend. Believe me, 60 cents per game is a GREAT price...I'm lucky to find loose Atari cartridges in my area for less than $5.00 in most pawn and thrift shops. As for fun games to look out for, keep an eye out for most Imagic and Activision titles. Red labeled Atari games are also pretty good...especially games like Pac-Man JR, Gravitron, Dark Chambers and Secret Quest.
bergbros
A gamer, not a collector. Ahhh... a welcome respite from the $960 a cartridge boys. You can get the best games for the most part for very little. That is the beauty of the hobby, I think. For me, it ihs always been the enjoyment and the hearkening back to a more innocent time when I was a teenager in the early 80's. As others have said, what you are willing to spend is up to your budget. I think you can get the best quality games relatively cheaply as, generally, they tend to be more common. You have to say to yourself, I am willing to spend for $X dollars and stick to it and be patient. The 2600 is relatively easy to collect. Ebay is always out there and the good games can be had for cheap. They will always be there so don't get caught in a bidding war. I got good games like Gravitar and Solaris without ever getting another bid this way. You can always get good feedback on a game by sticking to this board or try an emulator to preview the game before you buy. If you just want to play, you can always get the loose cart for cheaper and just download the instructions from this site. You can always trade your doubles to get a game you want too. The bottom line is what you want and stick to it.
Rick Weis
Fabulous, WELCOME TO ATARIAGE!! I agree... activision you can't go wrong with!! as far as price goes pitfall 2 would be the only one from activision that would cost you more then 2.00 (unless found it at a thrift store) Take care, Rick

For example H.E.R.O. is more rare then Pitfall 2, and I imagine there are others. [ 02-14-2002: Message edited by: Junie ]
StanJr
Hey Fabulous, welcome welcome. Just like everyone else, I say spend what you feel comfortable with, but if you start shelling out more than $5 bucks for any game with a rarity of 5 or less, check yourself before you wreck yourself, dude. Rarity of 5 and up will start to steepen the price a bit, but as long as you are spending what you are comfortable with you'll be fine. I normally ceiling out around $5, but at Cinciclassic I saw a Tapper for $15 that I REALLY wanted, so I bought it, no big. And of course, the fine people around here are always primed to give advice in a pinch! Stan
moycon
Recently, Ive only been buying boxed games. I try to spend less than $5 per. No more than $15. Quite a bargin when you consider these games were like $25-40 apiece. I think the most I remember a game costing back in the day was Defender when it first came out. It was the most expensive they were selling at the mall display that day....It was $47.99. And get this...I used my Xmas $$ that year to buy it!! There are several Activision titles that go for WAY more than $2 including Pitfall 2. Cosmic Commuter, Beamrider, Rampage, Kung Fu Master and sometimes H.E.R.O. can fetch (woof!) prices of $10-$30 especially if the manual comes with it. Other times you get lucky and find someone selling a bunch of games for cheap that has one or more of these gems in it. You really just have to shop around. At least that's what my momma told me. eric_ruck
Also, with perhaps some noteworthy exceptions, the general rule of thumb is the more expensive the cartridge, the more it stinks to play. Cost is generally dictated by rarity, and there is a reason why some games are rare (like, nobody bought them when they came out). Of course, if you ever find yourself with a 7800 and a chance to own an Alien Brigade, well, that game is fun, albiet expensive. +-^CrossBow^-
Eric you the one!!! hehe..just kidding...Alien Brigade is about the only 7800 game that I truly want now. I have the other greats like Ikari Warriors, Commando...etc...but Tomcat and Alien Brigade are about the last 2 and then I will be happy with my 7800 collection. Horax
I´m also more a Player than a Collector! If You don´t Care about the Condition of the Cart´s Labels you can very often get Activision-Carts or Carts with worn out Labels on ebay cheap! I agree with the others, pay as much for a Cart as you afford! I also think you shouldn´t spend more than 5$ for a loose Cart.... HeHeHe... or maybe You´re as lucky as i was 3 Years ago and find 22 (perfectly working!) Carts and 2 Driving Controllers in the wild for free!!!! bcprs1
I am a big fan of the later Red label Atari games like Solaris, Secret Quest, Jr. Pac-man, Xenophobe, Radar Lock, Sentinel, Ikari Warriors, Midnight Magic.. and so on.... Fretwobbler
I agree with Crossbow on the Ikari Warriors thing, on both the 2600 and 7800 this is a great game. Buy it! Adam
Big Player
H.E.R.O. and Pitfall 2 are more expensive but worth it, since you buy the games to play. The game-play on these carts makes them the two best games for the 2600. Other games that I play repeatedly (and you might as well.) Double Dunk Maze Craze (great two player game) Pressure Cooker Adventure Kaboom
ATARIPITBULL
Even though every one else has said welcome I am going to say it too, WELCOME. With there being so many games out there for the 2600, I think you should get the type of games that you like to play first like Adventure, space, combat, and super hero type of games. Some of the games on my top ten list are: Pitfall 1 & 2, Adventure, Raiders of the lost Ark, Combat, and Montezumas Revenge just to name a few, so buy the types you like the best first then buy the others and see if you like them and the most I pay for a loose game, If I like it, is about $10-$15. jahfish
costs .... the good old problem .... if you search enough for cheap items, you can be lucky and find good items for reselling. that way you can support your costs a little bit. also economy shipping is a good thing to choose. just a little more patience needed, and at the end you save a big bunch of money when you count it together. i have trading friends that sometimes collect some more of my auction winnings from overseas, and then let everything be sent once by surface mail. big $$$ savings! i recommend that! also leave free ads in newspapers, or on message board (online or in the supermarket), ...... be creative and it will be rewarded! you don't get the games from sitting around at home. the most expensive is to get everything from ebay ....
