Arcade Classics for the PC

I just got my CD of Revenge of the 80's, 25

Classic Arcade Games, and it's great! Just like I remembered them all. If's funny because many of the games I am more familar with the 2600 adaptations that I played than the actual arcade game it was based on.

I love it so much I want to buy the 200 Classic Arcade Games CD next.

I don't know the people that put out this CD

but I sure love them!

That's not a half bad idea, take a bunch of MAME games, burn them onto a CD and then sell it! How can you go wrong? If you want to play the games on the "200 Classic Arcade Games" CD, just go to www.mame.net and download the latest version of MAME for your computer, and then go to mame.dk and download the ROMs for the games you want to play.

Enjoy!

To the makers of those CDs..

"You are not allowed to distribute MAME and ROM images on the same physical medium. You are allowed to make them available for download on the same website, but only if you warn users about the copyright status of the ROMs and the legal issues involved. You are NOT allowed to make MAME available for download together with one giant, single file containing all the supported ROMs, or any files containing more than one ROM set each. You are not allowed to distribute MAME in any form if you sell, advertise, or publicize illegal CD-ROMs or other media containing ROM images. Note that this restriction applies even if you don't directly make money from such a sale. The restriction does not apply, of course, if the CD-ROMs are published by the ROMs' copyright owners."

It is illegal to sell MAME or its source.

I REALLY dont wanna see the MAME team get in trouble by pirate cds.. do what Albert said if you want the games.. plus its free AND legal

Mame.dk just shut down... No more good Roms, now Im gonna have to go hunting around the net for a new good site. Most sites have like only 4 games at a time. And usually they arent very good.

BTW

Why cant I find a rom with a working sound version of the arcade War of the Worlds? Did the arcade originally have sound? The game looks awsome but the fact it has no sound really brings it down a notch...

I bought Wingear's arcade Emulator 2000 and it was a complicated mess. I did try to download from MAME and it didn't work for me. I was probably too computer illiterate to figure it out.

I found this pirate CD on ebay. I don't want to get anyone in trouble. I should have kept my mouth shut, but I just wanted to share my excitment about being able to play all my aracade favorites from my youth.

Hi there!

Hm... what I don't understand, is how can one(!) copyright holder prevent mame.dk from offering any ROMs at all?!?

Normal procedure would be removing the ROMs owned by that particular owner and keeping the rest online, or?

Just like Holmes recently did with all the Crystal something games...

Greetings,

Manuel

I bet it was voluntary.

If I were threatened with a lawsuit I might get scared enough to not want to risk another threat by keeping other ROMs online.

I doubt it was the IDSA, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the companies with a large stockpile of arcade titles under their belt, like Infogrames. I'm guessing that the folks at make.dk decided they didn't want to fight one battle after another with the ROMs, and this is the straw that broke the camel's back. Just like we run AtariAge for fun, I'm sure the same is true for mame.dk. It's not worth risking their personal lives for a website like mame.dk, where if they didn't take the roms down they might get sued.

Sure, they could have taken down just the ROMs for the one company who complained. But maybe they'll get another complaint a few months down the road, then they'll have to take those ROMs down also. They probably didn't want to go through all the hassle, especially given that they're a pretty high profile site. Personally I'm surprised it lasted this long. But I wouldn't worry too much, MAME is extraordinarily popular and I can't imagine it'll ever become impossible to find arcade ROMs to play.

Yes, while MAME is incredibly popular and the ROMS will be freely available, I happened to like mame.dk's great front-end. Their database was fast, had some great descriptions, and listed all the available variants all within a clean and well organized site. I don't want to spend extra time hunting around several websites to get my ROMS. With Mame.dk, it was all there for you in one nice convenient place with speedy updates and downloads.

I agree with you entirely. I'm not saying I like what's happened at mame.dk (I keep typing mame.uk!), but I'm sure other sites will pop up to fill this new void.

In some ways I thought mame.dk was very dubious. Have you ever followed what was going on there about 'donnations'?

Actually they were sort of demanding money (donations) to secure bandwith. At least thats what it said on their page. On several occassions when I tried to download something from them, I'd only get something like "We're low on donations lately, so no downloads today".

What I meant in general with dubious, was that in my impression mame.dk was there to earn money for the guys running it. Or show me one other page that asks for money in order to publically offer material with third party copyrights...

Manuel

Nah, I doubt anyone is going to get in trouble. That does open up a can of worms, though, doesn't it? Are titles like "Mr. Do" and "Moon Patrol" (in their original forms, of course) still "valuable" enough to warrant a bunch of lawsuits.

Copyright and software piracy folks have been arguing over that issue for years. The debate still lingers!

At least when you consider Midway/Williams/Atari games, they are.

Games like these are now going through another round of emulation and ports on the new systems. GBA in particular.
