Important note: This weeks competition is over. If you still wish to discuss Frankenstein's Monster, then feel free to do so, but no further scores will be accepted. Thanks to everyone for all their contributions! Please join in on the latest High Score Club competition!

In the cold dark night you make your way through the ghoulish castle of Dr. Frankenstein. There you must prevent him from completing his creation.

Your only chance is to gather stones from the dungeon and bring them to the tower where you must build a barricade around FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER before he has accumulated enough energy to come alive. To succeed you will have to move fast, avoiding poisonous spiders, vampire bats and terrifying ghosts. Complete the job and the village will be safe forever.

Scoring Points in Frankenstein's Monster

In this game you will start with 500 points. Each time you run into a ghost or a spider you will lose 20 points. Each time you contact a bat you will lose 10 points. Falling through a trapdoor will cost you 100 points. If you are unfortunate enought to fall into the pool of acid, you will lose 200 points and one of your three lives.

For each stone you place around the Monster, you will gain a bonus of 500 points. Finally, if you finish the job before your time runs out, you will gain a bonus of 100 points for each unit of time saved. NOTE: It takes 30 units of time to energize the Monster.

Hints and Tips

As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? Well, AtariAge happens to have a typed version of it online for your reading pleasure. Here are the tips the manual provides:

- The primary objective in this game is to beat the timer and enclose the Monster. A secondary objective is to complete the primary objective with the highest possible score. (ed - Well, not in this case ;) )

- If you are beginning to run out of time, you can take short cuts by jumping throught the trap doors to the platform floating in the acid. This will cost you 100 points, but it will save time.

- When jumping over the pool of acid, watch closely for the spiders. They will give you about a one-second warning before they drop into your path. It is best to make your jump immediately after the spider has completed its descent.

- Remember! This game gets more difficult with each stone you collect. Move as quickly as possible to save the time you will need later when you face additional trapdoors, even larger tarantulae, and movable platforms floating on the pool of acid. Be prepared for even more surprises as you get closer to completing the barrier.

The first tip is to wait until the lightning finishes its crash at the beginning of the game before hitting the button to start. This prevents the monster from starting to turn green right away.

Learn the jump distance and always play it safe. When on the moving bridge that's in three pieces, you want to position yourself at the edge of the bridge piece in order to jump to the next bridge piece. In other words, if you are moving right, position yourself at the right edge of the bridge piece to jump onto the next. Vice versa when moving left.

On the stationary 3 piece bridge, you have to position yourself at the back edge of each piece to jump onto the next piece.

Don't worry about the falling spiders on the 3 board on. They only fall far enough to hit you if you jump into them.

I didnotice on the bat stages if you run to the side of the screen, bats will travel straight down the screen toward you.

Now if you're trying to just beat the game, try this:

On stage 1, jump right to left over the hole near the middle of the middle level. Drop through that hole onto the platform. Finish the stage as normal.

Ditto this for stage 2, and it saves you two dangerous jumps. To cross the triple platforms, move to the back side of each platform and leap from there to the front side of the next one. Jump from the front end of the final platform onto terra firma.

Repeat the strategy for stage on on every stage to the end to reach the acid pool initially.

On stage 4, the jumping strategy for Stage 2 works very well when the platforms are moving the same direction you wish to go. If they are moving the opposite direction, move to the end of the platform that's facing the direction you want to go, then jump straight up. The space between platforms will move underneath you.

This works in stage 6, too.

TIP: Nothing can hurt you when you're on a ladder (even if you haven't started climbing yet).
A tip which I'm surprised I haven't seen posted yet is to wait for spiders to start descending before jumping (making sure, of course, that they're not in your way). That will ensure that the spiders don't descend in your way mid-jump.

Note that you'll see the "left most" spider for a fraction of a second before the others. If there's no way that any of the three "other" spiders (16, 32, or 64 pixels away) could be in your path, feel free to make the jump. But if the leftmost spider is to the left of where you want to go, it's better to wait until after it starts to descend so you can see who it 'brings along'.

Good luck everyone!

Hmm... so does the score max out on this one then? Since the score is largely based on your time bonus, has anyone figured out a theoretical max? Twin Galaxies has scores in the mid 4000's, so I figured it should be possible for a dedicated player to break 5000 at least.

I believe that 5,000 is the maximum points you can achieve.

4,680 :)

During this game, I hit 10 bats and one Ghost, which deducts 120 points. So, I could have had 4,800, but if I didn't get slowed down, may have gained 200 bonus points for each unit of time spared at the end.

I think 5,000 is the max, but I'd love to be proved wrong!

I did ;)

Who do you send in your scores to? Because, Todd is taking forever.

921936[/snapback]

As a matter of fact, Todd asked me to send my scores to him! So far I have 22 scores to send in...

That's cool, he's a good guy and all and the scores will get in, it just takes a while, he's pretty busy.

My thoughts exactly, but it's short and addictive, too. That redeems it to the point I'll play it--often time for hours on end!

I can honestly say that this game makes me want to throw the controller against the wall.

950 for my first complete game without turning off the system in fraustration.

The part that makes me mad the most is when you jump over to the one platform across the water, the spider comes out instantly, touches you, and bam you sink.
