Scoring Points in Jawbreaker

You score points by eating candy bars. There are 135 candy bars in the maze, each worth 10 points, for a total of 1350 points. When you finish all 135 candy bars, you receive a bonus of 500 points and you get your teeth brushed. This completes one frame. A vitamin pill will appear at the center of the maze three times during each frame. After eating the vitamin pill, you'll have a few seconds of extra energy when you can munch the smiling faces. Each face is worth 200 points. The faces turn red, then when your energy is running out, they'll blink red and white before returning to their normal color. Each player starts the game with three sets of jaws. The number of jaws left is displayed in the top left border of he maze for player one, and in the bottom left border for player two. After completing every other frame, a player gets an extra set of jaws, up to a maximum of three sets. When a player's last set of jaws gets munched, the game is over. There are eight frames altogether. The number of tbe current frame is displayed in the bottom right border of the maze. The smiling faces move faster and faster in each successive frame, making it harder and harder to escape them.

Hints and Tips

As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? AtariAge has both a typed copy and a scanned copy online. However, the manual itself doesn't provide any specific hints.

Tips...

The enemies generally won't appear on the same line on the same side of the screen as you.

The enemies will change directions to chase/avoid you.

When you eat a vitamin pill don't waste too much time trying to run down the smiling faces; especially on the higher levels use that time to gobble candy bars.

Learn to use the moving doorways.

As far as I can tell, the vitamin pill appears after a certain amount of time, NOT after eating a certain number of candy bars.

Aso, "as far as I can tell" as well (plus a tip from myself), either the vitamins don't disappear until you eat them, or they stay on the screen for a LONG time. So you won't always have to rush/risk death in order to get to them.

Another tip is that sometimes it's good to try to clear out either the very top or very bottom rows after eating a vitamin pill, since you'll get those out of the way, plus you'll be closer to the next vitamin pill once it re-appears again.

If possible, try to avoider going up and down the screen on the sides because you will get blind sided by a smiley face you do not even see b/c it is just enetering the screen from the side. Only use the side if you are going up/down and you can see the SFace already on the field of play. Otherwise, use the trap doors. It takes longer, but it is much safer.
I will suggest that you establish some sort of pattern in your head. It helps me sort of maintain my cool during the game as things speed up. I mentally split the screen in half and try to do the right side first then the left side. Alot of that has to do with my poor moving door use though.

Secondly, try to use all three of the vitamin pills on every level. In the early levels I pursue the enemy after the pill to try to build points. Those late rounds they don't stay vunerable long enough to really pursue them. But if you can get an incidential enemy take the points.

Its easy once you get a pattern down. Don't hang on the sides (as mentioned), use the holes in the floor to get the dots.

Don't forget, when you hit about the halfway point, they get confused, sometimes no smiley comes, but most of the time, one will be chasing you from the same direction you are going, so you can safely clear the row.

Try this. Say you're running a row, from right to left. A smiley pops up. Duck down to the lower row. Wait for the ghost to pass, double back slightly, go back up to the upper row and finish it off.

Also use the power pellets to clear dots, not to get the smileys. You'll hit higher scores in no time.

Well, I'm going to get a quick score on the board for this week, simply because I'm moving house on Thursday and probably won't have a lot of time after that.

So, 7110 for my first game.

Now, off to work...

[EDIT - might just help if I remember the screenshot!]

I LOVE JAWBREAKER AS THIS WEEKS CHOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is one of our favorite games. I'm really curious to see how good people are at this.

Question - I haven't read the manual, but I assume there is something in there about my guy getting slower and their guys getting faster. By the 3rd screen, it starts to feel like I am jogging and they are running - By the 5th screen, it feels like I am walking and they are sprinting!
