Questions about Polo

Hello everyone,

Just had a few questions on Polo - does anybody know how much it's gonna be sold for? Also - I've looked at the pics (which look fabulous) and noticed the cart says "ralph lauren polo" but the box and instructions say "polo". Any ideas why?

Thanks,

Hi all,

The game was considered for the release of the Ralph Lauren line of Polo cologne back in the late 70's. At the time, Atari and Ralph Lauren were both owned by Warner Communications (historians correct me if I stray) and a cross advertising idea was considered.

When I designed the label, I wanted to reflect this, and I know when Osmeroid did the great box art, he wanted to show it too. It is though at its heart an Atari thing, so you only see the reference once on the box, and on the cart labels.

Boxed games will be the regular new release price of $40. I was hoping to come in below that, but after the print shop was done maxing out my charge card, that is the best I can do.

I know you will be happy with it.

Now in the meantime, I have to find a way to lock up Computer Space for the show. It has not been used in public in at least 28 years. Its like carry plutonium around; scared to death about it.

(BTW, am I the only one that is too excited about the show to sleep at night?)

This wasn't the first time that Atari cross-promoted with other Warner Communications subsidiaries. Superman (and later the comic books like Atari Force and Yars' Revenge) came about because Warner also owned DC comics. Pele's Soccer came about because Warner owned the New York Cosmos. Surprisingly, very few Warner Bros characters appeared in Atari games.

But what I get a real kick out of is the AOL/Atari relationship. Control Video Corporation came into existance because they marketed the Gameline modem for the 2600, which was owned by Warner Communications. CVC eventually became Quantum Computer Services while Warner Communications became Time-Warner Inc. Quantum Computer Services became AOL and bought Time-Warner. So you have to wonder. If there never was an Atari 2600, would there be a company called AOL-Time-Warner today?

Cassidy,

Thanks for the info. I did not know the story about the cross-promotion with ralph lauren - that's really cool!!!

Anyway, I think 40 bucks is a great deal and would be interested in buying one after Philly3 if you still have some left.

Let me know and thanks for a great product!

I owned a prototype of Polo a few year ago.

Some old lady living in New York "collected" Atari games since they first came out. I guess it helped her with her arthritis.

Anyway when they first marketed the POLO collone 6-8 copies of Polo were sent to Bloomingdales in NY to promote it. Somehow this lady ended up with one of the carts maybee they gave the games away after the promotion.

She died and someone traded all her games into a local Video Game store. I picked up POLO for $20.00 but the handwritten instructions were nowhere to be found.

I really din't think the game was slated for release. It was just used for promotion as far as I knew.

I always thought they were going to offer the game with the cologne like a package deal.

If the end-user was going to ever be able to get a hold of it, I'd consider that a planned release.
