Mister VCS
Back in 1983 i saw a very different screenshot (?) from the VCS-version of Smurf with blocky graphiks. The trees are very blocky and in the background of the first screen you see a ugly gargamels castle. The screen was shown in the December issue of the German magazine "Telematch" (counterpart to electronic games). Is there a prototype? MattyXB
In germany is only the Smurf garameles castle avaible. The other is only as NTSC avaible. So I think it can not be the game Smurf save the day. Matthias
Scott Stilphen
It might have been an 'artist rendition' or perhaps an early version. Anyone have a scan of the issue/picture in question?
Mister VCS
Scott Stilphen: you can see a picture of the blocky SMURF at dieterkoenig.at/ccc/index.htm click on the telematch-article and scroll down the last scan "so siehts auf dem Bildschirm aus". On the right page you can see the Smurf screen-shot (in the middle of the last row). Was this (ugly) version ever programmed?

Scott Stilphen
Thanks. Does anyone have a better scan of this?
Scott Stilphen
Thomas Jentzsch was nice enough to make a better scan of the picture in question:
Mister VCS
Is there a prototype of this blocky Smurf? In 1983 I was shocked when I saw this screenshot in Telematch. They rated Smurf with 1 (1 the best, 6 the worst). I was totally confused. But when I saw the original-game in a warehouse I was amazed. On christmas-day 1983 I got this game at last. It was my favourite VCS game for years!
rasty
Humm.. if you count the background's horizontal resolution in the image, you get 40 which is technically correct. For the bird, 8 pixels wide... seems correct as well. Also, the score at the top is correctly aligned with the pixels/blocks of the castle... If it was an artist's rendition, that was pretty deceiving..! This screen would make me believe the game was actually being developed.. But as usual, who knows?! greets, Rasty.-
