A really good friend.

I am very fortunate to have a friend who gave an extremely rare Atari game. "Tooth Protectors" I asked her, do you know how much this is worth? She said "Yes, but you've been really good to me so I'll let you have it, on the condition that you never sell it." I hope eveyone else has friends as wonderful as this. She is very special to me. *Sniff*

For the price of an XBOX (like conservatively $250), just think how much Atari stuff you could get on Ebay!

and one XBOX game probably goes for $60.

Once i'm done collecting for the old systems tho, there's no reason I have for not moving up the ladder, and getting the new systems. Then I'll have the whole history covered, and not have to rely on emulation to play classic games.

I would throw Enduro, River Raid, Pitfall! Phoenix, Ice Hockey, and Gravitar up against any XBOX title out today. Once you get sick of the ONE title on XBOX, what then? You could loop through these 6 titles, that would cost probably around $35 FOREVER!

I believe that old systems complement newer systems rather well. There isn't a lot of overlap between 2600 games and what you'll find on consoles today. While I don't care for some genres (like fighting games), there are many others that simply can't be done on the 2600. For example,

- RPGs (Final Fantasy, Deus Ex, Grandia II)

- 3D Platformers (Mario 64, Crash Brandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Sonic Adventure, Zelda 64, etc)

- 3D Racing Games (Gran Turismo, Rallisport Challenge, San Francisco Rush)

Generally games on classic consoles are much simpler and more arcadish. Programmers and designers didn't have much choice, given the capabilities of the systems. So they had to focus on gameplay, which is why many of these games are still enjoyable today, even without flashy graphics and sound (crutches used by too many game designers today!)

So I expect my 2600 to be sitting besides whatever modern consoles I have (currently PS2 and GameCube) for the foreseeable future.

I thoroughly agree with Albert. There's no need to be a purist if one primarily seeks out the sort of game he enjoys playing; my 2600 co-exists rather nicely with my PS2. They cater to separate urges; if I want to engage in a top-down, addictive, point-A-to-point-B contest, I might plug Frenzy into my ColecoVision. But when I'm in the mood to explore an alien environment from a first-person perspective, which I also consider a very palpable addiction, I'll fire up the Sony and play Iron Soldier 3 or one of the Medal of Honor titles.

When you break down the essentials, modern first-person shooters are simply 3-D versions of games like Robotron:2084 and Venture. The difference is mainly in the perspective.

We all already know that great graphics do not necessarily make a great game, so the resolution point is practically irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. I have more fun playing Beany Bopper than Quake II, but Doom's more fun than both of them, because my priorities lay in visceral pleasure, not loyalty to a specific era.
