Bugs Bunny Easter Egg, Extra Copies Etc

We wanted to thank the classic gaming community for everyone's support of our recently released Atari 2600 game, Bugs Bunny. We've followed most of the recent postings and the favorable comments are truly appreciated. We knew we had a great opportunity with Bugs Bunny and throughout it's production we strived to consider the best interests of yourselves at every step in the process.

One of the factors which had to be considered was the balance between carying unsold copies vs. sales of multiple copies to interested parties. The advantages and disadvantages of limiting sales was discussed and we chose to allow for the purchase of multiple copies, limited to stock on hand. Therefore, all remaining copies of the game are curently available for immediate purchase at the show price of $45.00. These copies are not autographed. Contact games@atari2600.com for details.

Questions have been asked about quantity produced and additional production runs. Bugs Bunny was produced in a quantity of 250 copies. Approximately 95 exist with Bob Polaro's autograph from the show. We have discussed a second production but it is extremely unlikely in that a Lot size of 250 copies would not be absorbed as quickly into the market. Further, 250 additional copies would dilute the collector value of those already sold.

The Easter Egg contest was not solved during the PhillyClassic show. Soon after, we received an e-mail from Mark Darmofal at 14:49 on 28 April 2002. Mark wrote that he discovered the hidden Easter Egg. His discription of the location matched others posted to this news group. NUMAN posted his finding of the easter egg on the same day as Mark, yet the time of his posting was 16:57, two hours after Mark's e-mail. Mark Darmofal was the first to describe the repeatable location of the Bugs Bunny easter egg. I hope he will expand on his search in future posting to this news group.

Finally, Atari2600.com has not released it's rights to the Bugs Bunny game code. Copies of the game code are unauthorized and are the property of Atari2600.com. Release to public domain for emulation is a possiblity at a future date.

Bob P,

I'm sure I speak for everyone in expressing how much I appreciate you allowing your Atari creation to be made available to the community. I gotta say it's incredibly impressive and pushes the Atari to the edge.

I hope your getting the credit for the game you deserve. I know back in the day, Atari didn't always give credit where it was deserved.

Thanks again,

Joel

I am Numan, and I can explain the confusion.

When I discovered the Easter Egg, I was aware that there was a contest, but did not know the particulars of it. I did want to be the first to discover it, so I e-mailed atariage.com.

But then after thinking about it, it made sense to e-mail Atari2600.com, so I did after hopping on to their web site and seeing that the I discovered the horse after the barn door had been closed, but deciding to be the first anyway.

While at the Philly Classic, it seemed to me alot of the people there were members of these message boards, so I decided to join them (and use the username I have on gamefaqs.com) and post my findings here as well.

As to how it was discovered, I did play the game at the PC3 with the gentleman (whom I now presume is Joe Cody) from Atari2600.com in two player mode. While he was Elmer and shooting me repeatedly, he did make mention that the real points were by grabbing the bullets. Now I knew from playing the early version, you could not grab the bullets, but I was too busy being shot to really make a move on the bullets.

So I went home Saturday night, woke up the next morning and decided to play some Bugs Bunny. I did notice I was not getting any major points by just jumping through the hole, so I remembered the previous statement, and figured out that had to be the way to get the initials.

I then proceed to just stand under the house and grab the bullets and make Elmer walk back to reload. I did that until my score was about 5,000 or so then continued on in the game past the first intermission.

What then happened is that as Elmer became faster, he would not walk back to the house opposite but to the one I was under (on the right). As a result, I had to jump over to the left side from the right side. So while I'm jumping to and fro I hear the sound of me being shot as I'm on the left side, Bugs kneels/lies down, and there go the initials. It only lasts for a second or two.

So the game ends and I try it again, only this time not hogging the points but clearing the boards to the first intermission straight through and then doing the repeated jumps when Elmer is running really fast, and it happened again.

You just stand under the house on the right and grab the bullets. Elmer will begin walking back to the left house and will reload. Let him walk about 1/2 way back towards you and grab them again. As the game speeds up, it does not always work. However, in the early stages, you should be able to do it without any trouble.

Ok, here is how it works:

- you must be in the 11th level (the 3rd after the first intermission)

- Bugs Bunny must be shot while in the middle of jumping right.

It's very simple to do this in a two player game, where you can shot Bugs Bunny yourself. It's easier in the top row, but you can do this in every row. If you are smart, you can repeat the Easter Egg three times in level 11.

BTW: Stealing bullets or jumping across the screen borders has nothing to do with the trick.

And the trick works with the old prototype version too!

Now I wonder why I didn't find it before...

Bob Polaro is such a nice guy that when it was my turn at the table to buy my copy, he gave my 1 year old son Gabriel a pat on the head and asked him if he was an Atari fan yet, of course he only got a blank look from my boy, he then gave my boy a big smile then signed the copy to him.

  • 2 weeks later...

My Bugs Bunny arrive today. Now I am very happy. I will scan it later.

But I don't know if I will make the scan for my Prototype site, or for my normal collection. I think in the Prototype sections, because it was first a Prototype, what now is release.

I have scanned the Bugs Bunny cart, box, and manual and those will be online shortly. Along with several other recent acquisitions, such as Polo, Protector: SE (Jaguar), CyberVirus (Lynx), SCSIcide PhillyClassic, and Vault Assault PhillyClassic and others. I have obtained permission from the creators of all the above titles to put the manuals online, so the entries will be complete.

The PC3 Bugs Bunny will be added as a new entry here on AtariAge, so it is differentiated from the prototype presently floating around the net. This is also what we've done with other releases of prototype games, such as COmbat II and Elevator Action.
