I'd have to say Beamrider, though Demon Attack is a mighty close second.

Astroblast, Megamania, and perhaps Commie Mutants are my favorite vertical shooters on the VCS.

I played the hell outta Space Invaders back in the day but, as far as being probably the best 2600 Invaders-type shooter. . . I'm gonna have to rank 'em like this:

Phoenix - fantastic port, very nicely done as far as capturing the arcade's gameplay and the graphics were very good for the 2600, too.  Solid "A" game.
Demon Attack - terriffic overall game - very sharp graphically for the 2600
Space Invaders - old time greatness

Good poll.

I was fascinated by the colors and shapes of the Demons on Demon Attack since I first played the game.  It's still one of my all-time favorite shooters.

Phoenix, Megamania, and Space Invaders all come a close 2nd and are awesome too.

Galaga always counts!
It's the best "Space Invader typy shooter" EVER !

(unfortunately it was never an Atari 2600 game though, so this would be the exception where it actually does not count.)  ;)

Can't decide between Communist Mutants and Demon Attack. But choosed Commies, because my country (Poland) was communist back in the day.

This is one of the most interesting polls i have seen for a while  ,i had to really think hard about it and even replay some games to help me decide.
Straight away i narrowed it down to just five games :-Demon Attack,Galaxian,Megemania,Phoenix and Space Invaders but after deep thought Phoenix gets the vote,i think its a job well done and as it is quite fast paced it satisfies my short attension span more lol

5 1/2 years later this poll still going. I finally voted: Phoenix. Though it's a real tough call between about 4 on the list, and some hacks as well.

I voted Gorf.  Despite the fact that it doesn't come close to the original arcade version, I still think it's a decent port.

A couple others I haven't seen mentioned:  the homebrew Juno's First (or perhaps this isn't considered a Space Invaders type game?)

Spacechase -- I know it's kind of cheesy, but I think it has a really cool retro vibe to it :P

Astroblast gives you the option of using either paddles or joystick.  The paddles work better with it.
