7800 Crossbow

I just got my copy of the Atari 7800 port, Crossbow. And the game is dynamite! :lust:

A port of the 1983 arcade title from Exidy, Crossbow involves you guarding a group of adventurers in a Dungeons & Dragons type world from obstacles and monsters. You have to shoot impediments like rocks and stalactites as well as enemies that can kill them.

The 7800 version is an almost perfect translation. This only solidifies in my mind that the 7800 had some of the best arcade ports out there, beating out the NES and SMS in that area.

Any other Crossbow fans here? Any more lovers of the 7800 port?

Crossbow is excellent for the 7800. I have the complete set. Glad to have it and enjoy the lightgun on it. Get Alien Brigade and 7800 or 2600 Sentinel too, if you like this one. They are great too.

The 2600 Crossbow also did a fine display on Graphics. I had that copy too. Graphics are 100% top notch on that one too, but no light gun support for it. You have to use the joystick. Much too difficult and impossible to beat. Had to get rid of it because of the lousy controls. Otherwise I would have kept that one.

2600 Sentinel however uses the lightgun for the 2600.

Meh. The XE version is better.

Agree. Shouldn't have been but it was. The sound was better (digitized screens) and they spent more time on the graphics.

Both solid ports, but i agree the xe version is better due to more accurate sounds.

I essentially got the 7800 for this game, which is truly great. However, it seems to get harder every time I play it! I used to be able to go through the game several times but now I can barely hack the volcano part. So much fun. The arcade was great too. Anybody have a picture of it? I remember a big crossbow attached to it!

Crossbow is great on the 7800. When I first got the game, I didn't have the light gun, so I played it with the joystick. About a year later, I got a light gun, and it made the game a lot more enjoyable. It's still a good game even with joystick control, but I recommend getting a light gun for it if you have the opportunity to do so.

The backgrounds are great. The character sprites are somewhat on the blocky side, but you'll barely notice because there's so much action occurring on the screen. Each time you revisit a game scene (within a single game), the difficulty ramps up. By the third or fourth time you encounter a particular screen, the action can get quite involving.

When I bought my 7800 a few months back I picked up Crossbow at the same time, remembering how much I liked the 2600 version so many years before. On booting it seemed to work, sort of, but the graphics were all garbled. I took it back and got a replacement (the guy seems to be breeding them under the counter) only to find it had exactly the same problem. Has anyone else had a problem with 7800 Crossbow along these lines? The console and cartridge connectors are shiny clean and no amount of adjustment or positioning seems to have helped. I haven't had a problem with one single other of the stack of 7800 games. Is this a common problem or have I just been massively unlucky?

Cheers all.

Just got CROSSBOW for the 7800.After you shoot the drawbridge ropes, and enter the castle, arent you supposed to be in a hall with red eyes you have to shoot or something?.After I and my friends enter the castle safely, the game just goes to the choose screen and you cant choose the castle room, just how do you get there?I just want to make sure the game isnt faulty. It doesnt say anything in the game manual about it.Also,I might add,the 2600 version SEEMS WAAAY HARDER,and faster, probably due to the 2600 version emphasis on gameplay, since it was weaker graphic wise.Thanx guys

Nope there's one more screen before the giant head. You need to get to the 'haunted house' screen, which I believe is the red path.

Does anyone know if the NES zapper light gun can be made atari 7800 compatable?,like for example if you splice the 7800 plug onto it?Thanx

Hmm... it looks like the NES Zapper isn't a serial device like the joypads, so it might be possible to make a simple adapter. NES pinout:

TL5
xxxG

T - trigger (active low)

L - light sensor (active high)

5 - +5V

G - ground

Depending on whether the Atari needs active high or low for the trigger & light sensor you might need an inverter as well. (Just like the SMS trigger.)

The SMS gun doesn't need an inverter, you can just use the other half of an SPDT microswitch. I have an SMS gun somewhere which I converted to work both ways, with two cables coming out of it.

I'm a fan of Crossbow. It's a fun game. I'm not to good at it. I can't beat the Evil Master. I know i'm supposed to hit him in the eyes when they glow red. For me the Village and Volcano screens are tough.

My best score for this game is 249,500

The fastest route to the Evil Master is Green, Blue, Blue, Red
