Steem Engine 2.2 Released

Recommended Posts

http://www.blimey.strayduck.com/index.htmVersion 2.2 of the Steem Engine Atari STE emulator has been released. Steem is an Atari ST emulator for Windows and Linux that runs the majority of Atari ST software, including games. It's easy to setup and run, just make sure you grab the necessary TOS images first. I've run it full-screen on my laptop, and it's almost like having a modern day Stacy! This new version has several bug fixes and new features over the previous version, which are detailed on the Steem Engine Homepage.

I've been running XP for a few weeks on my primary machine (a dual 1.2Ghz Athlon MP box with 1.5Gigs of RAM) and I'm not too crazy about it myself. First thing I did was turn off all the Fisher Price eye candy to make it look more like Windows 2000. But it seems slower than Windows 2K Pro and I've had problems with programs and hardware that worked just fine under 2000. For instance, I was using an older Matrix Millenium II card for my second video display, and for the life of me I cannot get this to work under XP even though it's listed as a supported secondary video card. My primary card is a GeForce 3 and this combination works fine in 2000.

So I've run into problems like that, I don't appreciate all the hand holding that XP does, I don't appreciate the constant nagging to setup a Passport account and use other Microsoft services (like asking me what I want to do everytime I pop in a CompactFlash card with pictures), and so forth. I also disabled the activation crap, even though I bought a legitimate copy of Windows XP Professional. Microsoft can kiss my ass if they think I'm going to call them to reactivate my copy of Windows XP everytime I change a significant amount of hardware in my machine.

I just bought two hard drives to replace my IBM 75GXP drives (which I'm running in a striped RAID configuration) before they explode. When I install these new drives, I'll probably put Windows 2000 back on my machine. Anyone want a copy of Windows XP Pro that hasn't been registered or activated?

Unfortunately I am certainly not the first to describe Windows XP in this fashion, and I will not be the last.

Just a moment ago, Windows XP locked up on me *solid* when I was browsing AtariAge. I was using Internet Explorer (my first mistake), clicked on a link, heard a brief bit of white noise (maybe 1/5th of a second) and then my computer was totally locked up. Yep, I'll definitely be going back to Windows 2000 as soon as possible. Or maybe I'll make another attempt at using Linux full-time, and using WINE to run whatever Windows apps I need.

Isnt WINE still in Alpha stages? What I do is dual boot..keep about a 4 gig partition (FAT32) for windows when I need programs running only for windows. I havent checked on WINE lately.. the main reason I stil keep windows, is i have a 3com 56k WINMODEM with no Linux drivers, so I have to keep windows for now, as its my only way to get online.

Actually I've been running XP Pro since last summer and so far it's been working great. I haven't many complaints about it, as most of the software that I've tried to run on it works just fine. there are some issues, mostly DOS-related, which is to be expected. But there are a few programs that just don't run that well no matter what I do. Not a huge deal overall, since pretty well everything else works great, but it is a minor annoyance that I'd like to try and work around.

The eye candy isn't that bad, but the first thing I had to do was turn off that "new" start menu. What an annoying bugger. I switched it back to traditional style and was happy. Then I just disabled the internal firewall (which is only one in the most academic sense) and made a few tweaks and it's all running very nicely.

Now, if Microsoft would get rid of the absolutely rediculous requirement for skins to be logo approved, we might actually see some nice skins for it...

(Yeah, I know there's StyleXP, but it'd be easier just to slap in the skins you want without having to use StyleXP)
