Noble Kale
What's the difference between an ST and an STFM? (both my 1040 & my 520 appear to be STFM's)
Marc Oberhäuser
I bought my 520ST early. It had already a FM modulator build in (even I had to send it back 2 times because the modulator did not work). A friend of mine bought the 260ST. Well, this system was really naked:) No modulator, no TOS ROM and 512kB memory (yep, this machine did not come with 256 kB:). But we upgraded it very soon to 1 MB and ROM... Silver Surfer
I also bought mine early, it had the built in RF Modulator but the external diskdrive hence Atari 520 STm.
Silver Surfer
If I am not mistaken I think that the F stands for floppydrive and the M stands for modulator...My memory is a bit foggy here but that was what popped up.

Yes, I believe you are right. I know that all the STfm models have a floppy drive and pretty sure they also have the RF Modulator. But don't the original 520STs also have this? Or do they only have a monitor output? I don't remember, and I don't have one in front of me. Time to do a little digging in Google. ..Al
Markimus of K.
Yep, you guys all correct in a haphazardly way, the F/M in a 520ST F/M was indeed referring to the (F)loppy drive and (M)odulator. The very first STs had neither of these, or TOS in ROM. Thank goodness I never owned one of these terribly crippled machines, but they could be worth something to a collector? As always, Markimus of ST.
Opa Opa
I think Danzig is correct.
geosteve
That info on the F and M above is indeed correct, only the first released 520STs have neither, that's the model with the small back and and the diagonal vents do not have squared corners. All the first 1040ST models from '86 have the F but no M and do not have a RF hookup (tv port), these have internal TOS 1.02 By 87, both 520 and 1040 models are now FMs., the better part is the TOS version from 87 called 1.04 is much much better and these systems have it standard.
