XL/XE compatible Atari 800?

VBXE for this would be nifty too. If that means a new CPU board, then why the heck not?! While you're in there, how about a 65816?

(...)

Exactly my thoughts, at the early stage of this thread, and Candle's comment warned about propagation-delays, etc... but fully leveraging the machine's unique expansion potential, I wonder why not going with a "red-hot" upgrade, all the way.

A CPU board (with VBXE) should be on the cool-list-of-things-to-do, but not while the Incognito is under construction. (Now after I've had an Incognito plugged in a week that will be different. ;-)

...Well, there may be more to it what the "naked neuron" can think of... What about Blue-Tooth support, of some sort, in combination with a resident SDX mini-driver that would allow you to extend / attach keyboard + gamepads?

Not sure if it can be done, but... The machine's inherent expansion capabilities is just an invitation to all of these...

Why don't we add a plutonium reactor and tracking lasers while we are at it? Candle et. al are doing the actual work. There are constraints of time, money, space, and energy and that is before the considerations of the board itself which seems to include quite a LOT as it is right now. I'm sure installing a VBXE will be possible with this board installed. You'd probably have to leave the board in there and the machine therefore an XL/XE but it should be doable.

I'm sure the man is just thrilled with all the wishlisting. There isn't anything easy about what has been accomplished so far and there aren't piles of money to be made from doing it. If you want Bluetooth and gamepads and the other plethora of things that have nothing to do with making an 800 fully XE compatible then I suggest investing in a scope, logic analyzer, and all the rest. I further suggest boning up on assembly programming, digital logic, and electronics. Making things happen take time, money, skill, and motivation. Get to it if you want these things so badly.

Sort of pointless observation, considering that this mega-upgrade already has good stuff on it that little relates to pure XL compatibility...

...My skills are now focused on making money (plenty of it), instead of the upgrades themselves. In such case, I will continue to focus at what I do best (cash), and then use it to motivate and reward the inventions of those whose skills are already developed and focused in designing and producing these gadgets, much faster than anything I could come up with in the short term (and hopefully learn from them, along the way). The trick here is that I will only buy the best of the best (not just ghetto-stuff).

Your proposal just sounds like an overall losing proposition, not just individually, but for the community, as a whole. Sorry, but it is what it is.

For someone so good at making plenty of money you don't seem to have a grasp of the economics involved here. The Incognito when finished is probably going sell less than one hundred units and will most likely sell somewhere between $100 or $200 a pop. It is a product by an uber enthusiast for uber enthusiasts and isn't going to make any profit worth thinking about when the time and effort involved is considered. Piling on more stuff will only drive up the price and put it out of reach of more of the potential audience for it. The additional features beyond XE compatibility aren't the out there things you're asking for. They are the OSes, IO options, and additional memory necessary to get an upgraded 800 running the full spectrum of XE software as quickly and convieniently as possible.

I also doubt you have the least awareness how incredibly spoiled and insulting you are coming off. The Incognito as it stands is not "ghetto stuff". It instantly brings to the 800 SD card storage and compatibility with damn near everything you can find to put on that SD card. But this isn't enough, it should have an entire truckload of fanboi inspired features dreamed up by people who have no idea what difficulties are involved in producing a product like this. And you'll dangle your wallet as though that is all it takes to make it happen.

Ok, so your vast riches suffice to make your dream product happen. An Incognito follow on that incorporates VBXE, Bluetooth, gamepad mapping, and the rest of the menagerie you're wanting would be take at LEAST a year of fulltime work by a small team of hardware and software developers. I figure about $20,000 for starters and I am most likely lowballing at that. Dangle that sort of motivation and reward in front of someone who is going to have a seriously bad taste in his mouth working for you then maybe it can happen.

i would say 20 at most

Really? Wow. Never having produced and sold anything for the A8 market, I had no idea how small any given segment of it is. I salute you for making this for those of us who want it.

Damn straight! Glad to be part of the beta tester group. There's been at least one Atari in the house since 1977 - I plan on keeping it that way for a lot longer.

...Can't argue with such abysmal / frightening reading comprehension. To me, this new board is exactly the opposite of what you (woefully) conclude above.

And by looking at the interest (and clicks / reads) this thread has amassed so far, assuming that it will sell 20 units (because of price) is one hopeless conclusion, considering (for instance) what the second run of Nuxx-drives produced @ north of $140...

It will take terrible sales & marketing skills to sell less than 20 of these boards...

Just take a rest, and enjoy your weekend.

Sounds like an excellent plan. :)

Any problems running XE carts with this?

. . . will most likely sell somewhere between $100 or $200 a pop. . . .

If that's so, count me in to buy one. I'm good with a point between USD $100 and $200 .

...Must agree, again.

...At least I am not spending my money in dumb 16KB boards, and other useless upgrades, and, instead, concentrating all fire-power in the MOTHER of upgrades.

Just a beer less here, avoiding ebay's redundant garbage there, and a good chunk of this forum will be perfectly able to afford a best-in-class piece of HW.

I think Candle's estimate of 20 is VERY low, i would say atleast 2 or 3 times that, minimum... quality A8 products for the $100-200 range seem in demand...

sloopy.

He has been known to underestimate demand, he was hoping to get 25 pre-orders for the first U1M build and ended up with 135 or so.

I am not fond of buying multiples of hardware, but I am sorely tempted in this case. It is just too cool. Of course if I do buy two, that will just ensure Candle will have another genius idea and obsolete them. :)

News flash, 32 year old computer... it was obsolete a 'couple' years ago ;')

Good hardware is worth buying multiples if you can use it...
