Mathy Posted December 8, 2017 Share Posted December 8, 2017 Hello guys Not via eBay but via Ibood (Internet's best online offer daily): Some Allocacoc (who comes up with a name like this?) stuff. It's actually a bunch of power sockets on the outsides of a cube. Meaning that since none of the power sockets are in the same plane, power supplies don't cover up more than the socket they are plugged into. Extra power sockets are always nice when visiting an Atari meeting. And one of these babies has two USB ports for charging phones and stuff. I've head that Telex is still used in the shipping industry, so get down to the nearest port, stat! LOL. I remember my very first job was making some hours at my dad's office when free from school. It was a shipping company and the Telex was their life-line. It was a Siemens exactly this model. To save costs, you would type the message first and the letters you'd type got punched on a paper tape ont the puncher/reader on the right edge of the machine. You could do this as slow as you want since you were "off-line". Next you removed the paper tape, put it back in at the starting point, set-up the connection and pressed a button that made the tape start to read back and the message typed out and transferred. Then it was quickly disconnecting again, else the charges went on ! Here's a video of one in action. I'll never forget the sounds and how impressed I was that someone on the other part of the globe was now receiving exactly the same message ! (The one I remember didn't have that dial on the right....I think we had to use a separate phone.....really can't remember.....) I remember that a lot of abbreviations were used that only the transport world people understood (to save letters and thus costs). You would never see long texts written out like that you see on that video... Fuck....I am OLD My dad was probably one of the first 100 or so people to buy a fax (wait I should say Telefax) machine. Found the story behind it including the vinyl record instructions interesting and while the game is rather simple it's nicely done and my daughter (6) will play it for quite some time before getting bored. Over the past months I've been gaining an appreciation for these computers and wanted to see what it was all about. Got a C128 after listening to some retrobits podcast episodes as i had always found that "triple machine" and basically the last "original" 8-bit home computer interesting. Even got JiffyDOS and an IEC to SD adapter for it but it still sits in my basement boxed up and unused. I even ponder whether i should get rid of my ST and TT which have been dormant for over a decade and just stick to 8-bits and maybe some old consoles. The want vs. need ratio got exceeded for me though. I've acquired a few items this year that I'd only 'dreamed' about after seeing in the ANTIC magazines and such as a kid... 2x Indus GT Drives, a Percom AT-88 drive which I was happy to discover was upgraded to DD support. I always had a happy 1050 which was better, but I've enjoyed learning and discovering the quirks of these drives 'first hand'. And piecing together an Atari 830 Setup 1 by one, an 850 (I had a PR Connection), Atari 830 Modem with no power supply(I started BBSing at 1200 baud when I was.. 8? 300 is ridiculously slow haha) got the power supply on ebay... Telelink I cart from PRGE 2017 .. Now I need a Western Electric phone I've always liked the disk drives, and modding them... Acquired at least 5 1050's this year on EBay, and managed to clean and fix them all up. One in a lot was suspicious with lots of switches, and turned out it had an original 6K Happy board, that was very cool. The belt had disintegrated into particles, the RAM was bad, so managed to find and replace the 3 2K RAM chips successfully. Had to figure out the switch functions... Happy/1050 ROM select, 288/260RPM, Write/Protect, write bad sectors toggle, and drive 1/2/4 select. I've also now added a 555 reset button to this drive. Some have received Write/Protect mods from me, and AtariMax Happy boards, and maybe others will receive more USDoublers when I get my PIA's for my DropCheck EPROM burner and I make a double stack 6810 with a spare from replacements I've ordered to revive other drives with bad 6810's. Ordered and looking forward to trying out tf_hh's MiniSpeedy for the first time soon too - something faster than Happy in a real drive. I think recipient drive needs removing some caps to facilitate the higher than 3x SIO rates. Oh.. And I've got a couple 600XL's and 800XL's from fellow Canadian sellers, some working some not for future restoration/repair/upgrade projects... Anywhere from $20 to $50 each Cheers! This is likely the double density card rather than just a data separator like mine. The end of the PCB sticking out the back left is for connecting slave drives, there are jumpers to configure and the terminator chip would have to be removed. This Percom drive doesn't have a printer port. A manual is available on Atarimania. http://www.atarimania.com/documents/Percom_Data_At_88_Disk_Drive_manual.pdf PS: On the AT88-A1 slave mechanism the card edge for the ribbon cable appears to be sticking out between the side and back panels, to the left of the fuse holder. Under $7, shipped. Before that, a stock of various-sized machine-pin sockets for miscellaneous repair work (not for the 1088XEL). Next up will be DB9 crimp connectors, IDC box connectors and some appropriate ribbon cable to make controller cables for my 1088XEL build as well.
