What's the latest Atari related thing(s) you've bought on ebay?

tell us the story but who cares about ebay..... there is a multitude of stories to be told... and by the way the posts go because of the title, it seems almost apologetic if it's ok to post about stuff from flea markets, yard sales, swap meets, etc etc. and maybe some not posted at all because of the constraining title..

Hello guys

Not via eBay but via Ibood (Internet's best online offer daily): Some Allocacoc (who comes up with a name like this?) stuff. It's actually a bunch of power sockets on the outsides of a cube. Meaning that since none of the power sockets are in the same plane, power supplies don't cover up more than the socket they are plugged into. Extra power sockets are always nice when visiting an Atari meeting. :D And one of these babies has two USB ports for charging phones and stuff. :D

Sincerely

Mathy

Well, it's been two months already. Have you sent him a message yet? I've head that Telex is still used in the shipping industry, so get down to the nearest port, stat! :P

LOL. I remember my very first job was making some hours at my dad's office when free from school. It was a shipping company and the Telex was their life-line. It was a Siemens

telex.jpg

exactly this model.

To save costs, you would type the message first and the letters you'd type got punched on a paper tape ont the puncher/reader on the right edge of the machine. You could do this as slow as you want since you were "off-line".

Next you removed the paper tape, put it back in at the starting point, set-up the connection and pressed a button that made the tape start to read back and the message typed out and transferred. Then it was quickly disconnecting again, else the charges went on !

Here's a video of one in action. I'll never forget the sounds and how impressed I was that someone on the other part of the globe was now receiving exactly the same message !

(The one I remember didn't have that dial on the right....I think we had to use a separate phone.....really can't remember.....)

I remember that a lot of abbreviations were used that only the transport world people understood (to save letters and thus costs). You would never see long texts written out like that you see on that video...

Fuck....I am OLD :)

My dad was probably one of the first 100 or so people to buy a fax (wait I should say Telefax) machine. It was REVOLUTIONARY, and my das said it was the future. Man he was right in 1981 !

Nope, just a cart, but I the records and booklets seem to be available on EBay from time to time. Haven't seen one with a package, though, maybe they cam in baggies.

I still wonder whether it really makes sense to get the record as I don't have a turntable anymore and with shipping it's still around 25 EUR until it hits my doorstep.

With the record ?

Never had a Telex but my father was a very early fax adopter, too. It's funny how short the Telefax lifespan turned out to be. 30 years after it became commonplace it's more or less gone for good.

I remember the entire song was in one of the ANTIC Podcasts. Kinda cute for kids for sure....bit outdated of course. I had never heard of Coconotes before hearing that podcast.

I only know it from the ANTIC podcast, too. Found the story behind it including the vinyl record instructions interesting and while the game is rather simple it's nicely done and my daughter (6) will play it for quite some time before getting bored.

The CBS C64 version came in a plastic box.

I was always a Commodore guy back in the 80's and never for whatever reason even looked at the Atari line of computers. Over the past months I've been gaining an appreciation for these computers and wanted to see what it was all about.

As such, I've been working on building a little bit of an Atari 8-bit collection for myself. Here are some of my more recent ebay finds:

Atari 1200XL for 75 bucks... Wow... I think that's a good price. Should see it here next week.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/132423323865

A couple Atari 400 Computers. Think they look pretty cool.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/172989253439

A couple Atari XEGS's and a 1050 (looked like 2 for the price of one to me, love the detached keyboard)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/142586305887

Atari 65XE, and AtariMax IDEII (Read about the AtariMax IDEII, looks interesting)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/253257936445

Atari 600XL

https://www.ebay.com/itm/332448841919

Atari 800XL lot

https://www.ebay.com/itm/162717776540

Also picked up all of the Lotharek 8-bit stuff he's dreamed up. Already installed the 1mb memory card in one of my 800XL's. That's pretty neat, although I have yet to figure out what all I can do with it. The Rapidus is something that I'll have to spend a bit of time figuring out, as I want to take my time installing that one. His power supplies work great too! Better than the old factory Atari bricks that I've been getting with my machines.

So much to learn, but am having fun with this stuff!

Always an Atari guy here, well starting after my very first computer, TS/1000 (ZX81). And though I have done plenty of buying and refurbishing Commodore stuff over the last 2 decades, I never really got into it beyond playing with what I had picked up until it sold. But I am planning on finally doing what you are with your new found like for Atari, but on the C64. I'm also planning on doing this with the TI-99/4A and Coco 2/3 brands as well.

Got a C128 after listening to some retrobits podcast episodes as i had always found that "triple machine" and basically the last "original" 8-bit home computer interesting. Even got JiffyDOS and an IEC to SD adapter for it but it still sits in my basement boxed up and unused. I even ponder whether i should get rid of my ST and TT which have been dormant for over a decade and just stick to 8-bits and maybe some old consoles.

Congrats on that, I was bidding on that one too haha. The want vs. need ratio got exceeded for me though. :)

I've acquired a few items this year that I'd only 'dreamed' about after seeing in the ANTIC magazines and such as a kid... 2x Indus GT Drives, a Percom AT-88 drive which I was happy to discover was upgraded to DD support. I always had a happy 1050 which was better, but I've enjoyed learning and discovering the quirks of these drives 'first hand'.

And piecing together an Atari 830 Setup 1 by one, an 850 (I had a PR Connection), Atari 830 Modem with no power supply(I started BBSing at 1200 baud when I was.. 8? 300 is ridiculously slow haha) got the power supply on ebay... Telelink I cart from PRGE 2017 .. Now I need a Western Electric phone :)

I've always liked the disk drives, and modding them... Acquired at least 5 1050's this year on EBay, and managed to clean and fix them all up. One in a lot was suspicious with lots of switches, and turned out it had an original 6K Happy board, that was very cool. The belt had disintegrated into particles, the RAM was bad, so managed to find and replace the 3 2K RAM chips successfully. Had to figure out the switch functions... Happy/1050 ROM select, 288/260RPM, Write/Protect, write bad sectors toggle, and drive 1/2/4 select. I've also now added a 555 reset button to this drive. Some have received Write/Protect mods from me, and AtariMax Happy boards, and maybe others will receive more USDoublers when I get my PIA's for my DropCheck EPROM burner and I make a double stack 6810 with a spare from replacements I've ordered to revive other drives with bad 6810's.

Ordered and looking forward to trying out tf_hh's MiniSpeedy for the first time soon too - something faster than Happy in a real drive. I think recipient drive needs removing some caps to facilitate the higher than 3x SIO rates.

Oh.. And I've got a couple 600XL's and 800XL's from fellow Canadian sellers, some working some not for future restoration/repair/upgrade projects... Anywhere from $20 to $50 each

Cheers!

@ Nezgar,

can you photograph your at88 doubler board front and back? they were looking to archive that and possibly reproduce them at some point...

Will do! I'll start a separate thread when I do. It has other oddities too like formatting DD disks with a skew that's not actually optimal for itself, and non-zeroed sectors. Hopefully I can dump any ROMs on it eventually. It's labeled an AT88-A1.

That was mine ;-) Hope you enjoy it.

Thought it was in excellent condition, especially after I upgraded it to 64K and you definitely got it at a good price!

I have 2 more just like it. Kept one for myself (always loved the small form factor) and will be selling the other soon (unit only).

Are you certain it's an AT88-A1. The FAQ on Atarimania lists that as a slave mechanism, which is meant to be connected to another Percom drive with controller.

http://www.atarimania.com/faq-atari-400-800-xl-xe-what-other-floppy-disk-drives-can-i-use-with-my-atari_23.html

I have an AT88-S1 I got about 5 years ago which is only capable of single density. It does have a small PCB plugged into the socket for U6 which I'm fairly certain is a data separator upgrade.

Good catch. Looks like I got confused with the next one the seller posted on ebay that I'm watching, not sure where the card edge connector is on it, maybe right up against the case on the back: https://www.ebay.com/itm/222716933109 Maybe coming from same seller, this has a higher likelihood to be DD?

That is the almost the same drive as mine, but the add-on card is larger with more chips. This is likely the double density card rather than just a data separator like mine.

The end of the PCB sticking out the back left is for connecting slave drives, there are jumpers to configure and the terminator chip would have to be removed. This Percom drive doesn't have a printer port.

A manual is available on Atarimania. http://www.atarimania.com/documents/Percom_Data_At_88_Disk_Drive_manual.pdf

PS:

On the AT88-A1 slave mechanism the card edge for the ribbon cable appears to be sticking out between the side and back panels, to the left of the fuse holder.

  • 1 month later...

Oddly enough, a NOS Logitech optical PS/2 scroll mouse (at Michael's recommendation) for eventual use with my 1088XEL build. Under $7, shipped. :)

Before that, a stock of various-sized machine-pin sockets for miscellaneous repair work (not for the 1088XEL).

Next up will be DB9 crimp connectors, IDC box connectors and some appropriate ribbon cable to make controller cables for my 1088XEL build as well.
