DOCTOR WHO

Rise Of The Cybermen

RobotRiotWIPDsmall.gif

The Doctor murmurs, "It's happening again. CYBERMEN!"

The Cybermen crash through the windows surrounding the Doctor. They tell him that they have been upgraded to "Human.2", the next level of mankind. Every citizen will receive a compulsory free upgrade and become like them. The Doctor asks what would happen if he refused. A Cyberman replies that if he would not be made compatible, he will be deleted, and reaches for the Doctor.

The Cybermen surround the Doctor and he raises his hands, fists clenched. He tells the Cybermen that he surrenders and will submit to the upgrade, but the Cybermen ignore him. A Cyberman declares the Doctor as incompatible and inferior: Man will be reborn as Cyberman but the Doctor will perish under "maximum deletion."

From My Blog:

I have been playing a lot of Malagai lately. It is a really good Atari 2600 game that a lot of people don't even know about. You should give it a try. You are trapped in a maze with some really weird Aliens and the only way out is thru 3 locked gates/airlocks. Guess who has the keys?

Malagai.gif

As I play games I usually come up with a few ideas about making changes and Malagai was no different. The first thing that I wanted to change was the enemies. The original Aliens were just too similar and the game is hard enough without chasing the wrong keyholder. So I changed them all to Robots that each had a distinctive look. Next I wanted to change the player sprite. In Malagai you are a floating spaceman with a jetpack. It is a cool looking sprite but doesn't really fit the maze theme. I changed it to a running man sprite. As I was play-testing the changes I noticed that the original sprite sizes overlapped the mazes so I clipped them by a few pixels to square them between the maze walls. At this stage I already enjoyed the game more then the original.

So, That's it then. Another finished hack. Not quite. Why leave things alone when you can change them? I decided to change the three maze level colors. I prefer primary colors so the new maze colors are Blue, Red, Bright Green. Next up the Title screen. I think the name Malagai actually hurts a game like this. What does Malagai mean? Malagai is actually the name of the race of Aliens in the original game. Malagai is a good name for Aliens but a bad name for a game. Most people don't know what a Malagai is or how to pronounce it. How do you tell your friends about this great new game when you can't even say the name? So lets see, We have a game with Robots in a maze and the Robots can go into an attack mode. A few titles I came up with:

Robot War

Robot Maze

Robot Riot

They are all OK but they don't quite do it. Then I started thinking about movies with Robot type enemies:

Borg

Cylons

Daleks

Daleks?? Hmmmm. Always wanted a Doctor Who game for the Atari 2600. So Daleks it is. After a few minutes of trying to make three distinctive Daleks I decided not to use them. Wait a minute, Doctor Who also has CYBERMEN!!! That's it. And it just so happens that there was a revival of the Cybermen on the new Doctor Who show on SciFI Channel. So now I have the name of the hack, RISE of the CYBERMEN!

I use Hack-O-Matic for most of my hacks and in the description of how I made this hack I leave out a lot of the tedious trial and error of searching for code that controls graphics, colors, etc.. Sometimes the smallest detail can take the longest to add or change. I am amazed at how a few changes and a tie-in to a show I like really increases the enjoyment I have playing the game. So there you have a rough overview of how I hack a game. I usually don't have a plan other then to make a few changes and it just evolves into something. Give it a try with one of your favorites.

I did a test with my Blog to see if it was worth posting info there or just posting here in the Hacks Forum. Looks like the Blogs are ignored by most people. I offered a chance to reserve 5 copies of Doctor Who and only had 2 takers in a day and a half. I will offer the other 3 copies here. Let's see if there is a difference.

My next release will be Doctor Who:Rise of the Cybermen.

Well, It seems that the good ol' Atari Hack Forum is much more popular then the Blog. There was a big response for reserves from the message above and a little confusion as well. There were only 3 more copies available for reserve but I can see how it was easy to believe that 5 more were available. No big deal, I just allowed 5 instead of 3.

Because of the response I will just post any of my future ramblings here instead of the Blog.

Here is the first confirmed extra.

Doctor Who comic

I have a COMPLETE run of the Doctor Who comics put out by Marvel in the 1980's. They are issues 1-23. Each cartridge will come with the corresponding Doctor Who Comic Issue. So #1 recieves issue #1 and so on.

Well, I feel bad I just never read the blogs at all. I have seen them but didn't know what to make of the ones that I have clicked on. WHOOPS! I do like to look at the Homebrews and the Hacks sections but so many are not real carts offered, they are bins, or ROMs or whatever.

:( Ok I sound old and ignorant but I am glad this was listed in the Hacks area and is a real CART. I can't wait to get it. I still have my Dr. Who hoodie with the 5 doctors on it and the Picture Disk (vinyl record) from the 1984 convention I went to. I am still a sci-fi geek, too. SCARY.

I was never into Doctor Who until the new series started airing on SciFi Network. Since then I have gone back and started reading the classic Doctor Who novels and they are pretty good. Even the old TV shows are enoyable. Sure they are dated and campy but I think that makes them even more fun to watch.

I was going to keep everything in the Doctor Who package only from the new TV series but have changed my mind. It will include old as well as new Doctor Who items. I am working on several more and will post them here when they are confirmed.

I recommend three of the best Dr. Who books - I used to have at least 25 as a kid and sold most of them in a yard sale when I got into boys. (OK I should prob tell you I am a girl... :D )

Anyhow the books are: Keeper of Traken, The Masque of Mandragora, The State of Decay. If you have a chance to pick up any of these books to read they are well worth it. They were some of the very best episodes that I waited to see the next 30 min part each day of the week. Used to come on at 6pm on our Public Access channel (our only TV channel). The books are small paperbacks published on Target Press. Betcha folks are glad I don't have a blog because I am so full of TMI. lol

That's a really cool idea! I had most of the books pictured, long ago. I even did book reports on them in school until the teacher made me switch to other kinds of books. I was quite pissed about that... :x ...that was in the 4th grade in Catholic school. Talk about no fun...

Really can't wait to get this cart.

A custom box may be included. Not definite yet.

Do you guys like having luck-of-the-draw(like an autographed picture included in only a few) or do you prefer to have all of the carts include the same items?

I don't feel like I have to have the same thing as anyone else. Everything else is gravy! (and very creative/cool ideas)

As long as I get a cart, I am one happy gal!

I need to locate my Dr. Who 5 Doctors Picture Disc. I have a Dr. Who picture album somewhere...I'll post a pic if I can find one!
