PS3 memcard adapter

Don't remember seeing any mention of this. Not even sure how long they've been out. But I noticed it for sale at walmart during my lunch break. Cost $15. It does not, however, come with a mini usb -> usb cable. So if you do not have one, be prepared to buy one.

The 60G version comes with a USB to mini cable. It's needed to charge the controllers.

BTW, posting from my brand new PS3. :D

You mean the console that has an actual mouse and keyboard capability, and actually has enough resolution to make a web browser useful?

:rolling:

Hardy, har, har. :P

I'm using a USB keyboard with it right now. So, it apparrently works. I haven't tried a mouse. Although, I was tempted to hook it up with the regular AV cables instead of component just to see if the Guncon 2 controllers would work.

The browser is a bit slow, but it does the job. Resolution is fine. So far I prefer to keep mine set at 720p. It just looks better to me than 1080i on my TV.

Edit: And, after a brief check, I can now confirm that the browser supports the main purpose of internet use. I can visit porn galleries and download pics to my hard drive. :D

Regular s-video (or composite for that matter) cables/inputs aren't going to make the Guncon work on an HDTV. The scan rates are quite different, and the sets are internally up converting the signal.

Now try web browsing on a Wii, and tell me how it looks, and how fun it is to type on a virtual keyboard with the wiimote  ;)

You can use the USB charging cable that comes with your PS3 and packed-in Sixaxis to connect it, but here's a useful tip - most digital cameras have the same port to USB cable, and if you've ever connected your PSP to your PC it's ALSO the same cable. Chances are you've not only got the one from your PS3 to charge your Sixaxis, you've got a half dozen more.

As for the accessory, it was the very first thing I bought to go with my PS3 since EVERYTHING else was sold out after I bought my PS3 - all component cables, extra controllers, the whole enchilada. I've found it's incredibly handy for importing my PS2 save data and storing it on "virtual memory cards" on the PS3, to the point I'm not sure if I even need PS2 memory cards any more after dumping them all. I haven't tried it with PSOne data yet but I expect the same functionality.

Ahhh forgot that the sixaxis cable end was a mini-usb. I already had on for my PSP so no worries.

So it's been out for some time then? For some reason I got the impression it was on Sony's "To do list", kinda like the ability to download PSP games from the PSP.

Yeah. I've seen them for several weeks. I'll need to snag one this weekend. I'm already in love with virtual memory cards.

As I understand it (and MMF can shed some light on) is that the adaptor is more or less just a reader for the PS3. It allows the system to read the cards and transfer their data to a virtual card. They lack write functionality, so you can't transfer your virtual card save back to a real memory card.

Of course, it's stupid that the PS3 has several kinds of card readers already on board, but not a good old memory card slot.

Gabriel's got it essentially right. I haven't tried to transfer data from PS3 back to a PS2 memory card, but I'll plug in my memcard adapter right now and make sure this doesn't exist. When I swapped HD I had to back up my data and I +was+ able to copy PS2 virtual card files to the 2 GB memstick in my PSP and restore them post-swap. Anyway let's see what happens...

Nope, seems it will only read and dump the data to your PS3, at which point you can manipulate the data on your PS3, but there's no "copy back" functionality. It won't even let you format the memory card - you'll have to pull out a PS2 to do that.

uLaunchElf FTW.

I can do all that with my ps2, all of my game saves are all backed up on a 512mb thumb drive, and I can write them to my memory card as I need to.

I don't need a ps3 to get game saves to the computer or usb drive ;)

Is that a program, utility, or device? Any ol' way you slice it I've never heard of it, although I do somewhere in storage have a PSOne card reader which you could sync up to your computer through a serial port. It was an incredible pain in the ass and accidentally wiped cards a few times so it ended up not really being worth it just for playing hacked FF7 save files (though those were amusing).

You know how it goes, as soon as I had a PS3 and actually needed one of these little devices, everywhere was suddenly sold out. So, I looked around and eventually found one at GameCrazy.

Operation is simple. You plug it into the PS3 with the USB cable supplied for the controller. You plug the memory card into the adapter. Then the memory card comes up in the memory management section and, when you select it, you are given the sole option to copy it (the whole card). You get to name your new virtual card, and the program does the rest. Copying a card feels like it takes longer than it should, but I copied all my PS2 and PS1 memory cards in a few minutes.

The bad news is that if a game save has been copy protected by some developer with a god complex about how you should play your games, then the file will not copy over. What this meant for me is that all my Mortal Kombat saves failed to transfer. If I want to play them on the PS3, I'll have to unlock everything all over again. Of course, that's better than the 360's backwards compatibility, in which there's no simple way to transfer all my old save data from my XBox to my 360.
