  1. Been searching the internet for help, but a lot of mame project sites are old and out of date. I’m extremely hung up (my project has stalled ) on finding a good monitor for a 4 player mame cabinet. This cabinet is simply going to be for entertainment purposes, I’m not a stickler for recreating the original game exactly (I’ll save that for my jamma boards). I just want the monitor to be a good size and visible to all. I was going to use a 25-30’ CRT/ flat panel television with an S-video connector. Is there disadvantage about using this type of display? It seems like using a widescreen monitor/ TV is useless because all games are in standard aspect ratio so using an ‘old school’ TV is my only hope. Any suggestions or recommendations from personal experience? Seems like the most important choice is the one I have to make before I can even do anything!
  2. Ahhh, I see now. Pictures always make things so much easier to understand. Thanks for the help!
  3. Looking for guidance on understanding Jamma pinouts. To my knowledge, Jamma is a standard 56-pinout. If I were to buy a Tekken game which, from what I’m reading, has a 48-pinout…does that mean the Tekken cab is Jamma compliant? Meaning, in a Tekken cab, can I swap out the Tekken board for another standard 56-pin Jamma board? I guess I’m not understanding how another 56-pinout board fits into a 48-pinout cab. (or am I completely lost here?) To add to this, I'm looking for a jamma cab to swap PCBs. I have a choice between a Tekken 3 and Mutant Fighter cab. I'm not sure which one would be best in terms of overal quality and ease of use.
  4. This for my own knowledge and NOT some desperate plea, but I noticed that arcade games such as Virtua Fighter 2/3, most Tekkens, soul calibur, etc aren’t emulated in MAME. Will they ever be emulated in MAME? I’m trying to understand the reasoning behind why certain arcade games aren’t yet emulated and if it's just a hopeless cause. Are they available on other platforms? Will they ever be emulated?
  5. Nothing will ever make arcade games popular again...even old school consoles wouldn't get a boost. We tend to focus on the nostalgia value of arcade games. Many of us grew up on the repetitious nature of old school games. Today's generation is more graphical, storyline, etc...based. A game like Pac-Man is great to play for 2 minutes but that's it.
  6. Just curious, how are people able to obtain arcade boards AND dump the game onto a ROM, yet a simple picture of the game/ controls/ marquee, etc. isn't available? I understand some games never made it into production but I play the arcade games from the 70's/ early 80's (on MAME) and I'm often intrigued about what the cab/ controls, etc looked like, however pictures don't exist. Hell, even a summary or history of the game isn't even available for some of them. However, as I stated above, someone was able to find a WORKING board and found a way to emulate it? I dunno, just seems very weird to me. Any insight?
  7. http://www.gamefanfanatic.com/content-prod...ersary_new.html What type of monitor is this? I was looking at it at my local bar and it looked like a widescreen monitor flipped on it's side. I'm trying to get a feel for what a good/ great monitor would be for a MAME cabinet and I came across this monitor. Obviously not what I'm looking for but has a very nice appeal.
  8. You got it. Jusl like people working 2 jobs when they don't need to, or retiring from 1 job and then working full time at another so they can have 2 retirements when there are people out there who could really use a better job but they're taken by the greedy people. I think laziness is what's wrong with America. I love working two jobs when I only need one. It makes me feel better when they raise prices...which ironically is the point of this thread. People always complain and offer varying solutions to the problem...it's a lot easier to take care of yourself than to try and change the system. If gas wasn't $4.55 a gallon, maybe I'd give up my second job to someone less fortunate...
  9. Don't LCDs at that size come in widescreen format? I assumed it would look weird with the widescreen format and I would have to buy a bigger screen in order to compensate for it. I've actually been toying with the idea of just building a control panel and dumping the whole cabinet idea. I'm more interested in just playing games with the aracde controls and with friends. The cabinet was more nostalgia than anything.
  10. Building a MAME cabinet and I'm really REALLY hung up on what type of monitor to use. The cabinet I'm building will host up to four players and play every game that I can get my hands on (new and old). I'm strictly concerned with efficiency and functionality, meaning as long as the picture is visible and clear, I don't care if it deviates from the original format of the game. Picture size and clarity are my main concerns. Anyone have any recommendations for size/ type of monitor? I was thinking about getting Xarcade's 26 incher however if I don't like the thing, I don't want to waste time and money shipping it back. And I was thinking about just buying a used 30 inch flat screen TV, however I don't think it's logistically possible to build a cab around that. Kind of in a bind because I can't start to design the cab until I get the specs of the monitor.
  11. Was playing double dragon on MAME and it was running slow. I was thinking it was the emulation but then I remembered I played the cabinet about 5 years ago and it was painfully slow then too (I even had it on free play and I was getting pissed!). Why is this? Even when there aren't very many characters on the screen, the gameplay is horrid.
  12. As an IT guy, I’m embarrassed to admit that I can’t wrap my head around this... When a new version of MAME comes out, do the rom files change at all? Subsequently, when a rom gets updated, how do you know where to find the most updated version? And how do you know that it is, in fact, the most updated version? Basically, I’m starting to look for roms but I’m having a hard time understanding how they are maintained and updated. (and please let me know if I'm completely confused here)
  13. You really need a gamepad. A keyboard just isn't going to cut it. You can change the difficulty of the game in the dip switch menu. It might help a bit. If it seems like the games running slower than normal, it might be caused by your mame version. Newer mame versions require beefier hardware to run games at the same speed as older meme versions. I could play most games at full speed on a celeron 1.2 ghz slot 1 machine using mame .102. If you don't want to change mame versions, you can adjust your sound sampling rate and video options to compensate. I'm asking if there is a way to slow the speed. To me, it seems like the game is running faster than usual, but it just might be me.
  14. I’ve been playing PunchOut on MAME and I’m noticing that the controls aren’t very responsive when using a standard keyboard. When I punch or dodge, it’s sometimes on a delay. Is this something to do with the emulation process or is this simply how the game plays? The controls are accurate, they just seem…slow. Is there a way to slow the emulation speed? Keeping in mind that I haven’t played the arcade game in 20 years (and I was 7 at the time), I don’t remember getting passed Bald Bull in the arcade, however I don’t remember the game only lasting 3 minutes at best. It seems like the game is running a bit too fast and I can’t really find information on how to slow the emulation speed, only increase it.
  15. If a female teacher sleeps with a male student (why the F didn't THAT happen to me in high school), it's a minor offense. Reverse the genders and it's "immoral". Same thing here, just a double standard......but that's not going to stop me from virtually killing everything in sight!
