I am curious to learn what makes the Atari 2600 a great system for you all. I'm an Atari 2600 fan myself, but I was surprised to learn that such a large fanbase preferred purchasing the console and hunting the games down over emulating them. Before I came to this site I was under the understanding that if you wanted to play abandoned old games, you'd just download an emulator and the roms, and I give more respect to all the members of this site who put forth the effort to find a 2600.
The first time I ever experienced the 2600 was through a game my mother had once played long ago: Asteroids. I was underwhelmed at first, after all, the graphics were the worst thing I'd ever seen. Flickery, pixelated, and the asteroids all moved vertically. But I had fun playing it anyway.
I also played a game called Oystron (sp?) which was hard to figure out at first but kinda fun as well. And I'll admit the sound effects were kinda cool (I'm a sucker for old blips and bleeps, it sounds really techno-ish). It was like an adventure back into the past, way past.
Then I got a chance to play Activision Classics on a friend's PSX. Was a lot of fun, but didn't get to sample everything.
Several years later I bought Activision Anthology for the PS2 and was hooked. There was always a certain nostalgic charm in playing Atari games and all but I don't think I ever really appreciated the Atari 2600 until I purchased that collection. A lot of the game surprised me and I was shocked at the kind of innovation that could be done on what I perceived to be a really old and weak console. That was pretty much the moment I became an Atari fan.
Finally I bought the Flashback 2 because I wanted the authentic experience. To be honest, I preferred Activision's collection of games, but there were a couple of gems on there, Adventure being one of them, and I got to learn what the original joystick was like.
About 1 or 2 years later a friend you all know as 'A Sprite' informed me of this community as well as the power of the 2600. When I learned how hard it was to program games for Atari 2600 and with decent graphics my appreciation stepped up yet another level, and I looked at games in a whole other way, constantly shocked by the graphics this system could produce. Star Wars Arcade (think that's what it was called) was probably one of the most impressive in my eyes.
So why do I love the 2600? It's probably my favorite pound-for-pound system. Fun games that I can appreciate so much better now that I know the work that got put into them.
Why do you?
