#3134801 Next Gen consoles, which one's the best?

Posted by toptenmaterial on Tue Dec 16, 2014 7:38 PM

Wii U Oh, Ok. Comeon, outside of the initial hype, did anybody like the wii? I liked a total of two games on there, both mario titles, the sports titles were an OK diversion until real games came out, but me and my friends lost interest in those too. The only real saving grace was BC with the cube, but hey, I already have a cube, and the ONE most used feature on there, isn't supported on the wii (gameboy player) The Wii U is just an extension of that I'd like to get Mario and Luigi games, but I cna't help but think that I'd get the system, play it a very short time, be underwelmed by the touch pad thing, annoyed by most of the games yet again not supporting a perfectly good real controller, and the thing just sitting in the closet no more than two months in of owning one (just like the wii) It's to bad, Nintendo has the games I like, but the console actively prevents good third party games from being ported to it. Maybe there's some saving grace, but honestly, I didn't like the gamecube, felt burned by the wii, and honestly, this will just probably be more of the same.

I couldn't disagree with you more concerning the Wii. For me it was the defining console of that generation with awesome games like Galaxy 1 & 2, Epic Yarn, DK and NSMW. I have never enjoyed a console more. And it's a killer emu machine too.

#3120350 Does anyone know about GBA clones?

For some GBA games (like the Classic NES Castlevania) I much prefer the button layout of the SP to the DS.

#3119296 If you were Nintendo, what would you do?

Locking downloads to one specific system at a time is killing them. I don't know why they don't abandon this archaic policy.

#3118093 If Atari made a new console, what would it be called?

Posted by toptenmaterial on Fri Nov 21, 2014 1:19 AM

A "new" Atari could be introduced in the form of a $99 tablet. It would be manufactured solely by convict labor and marketed as the Slick Willy.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it will be advertised primarily in the Old Farmer's Almanac, Reader's Digest and on Howard.

Have a unified online user ID system. For crying out loud, it's almost 2006 already! :D

#3102045 My quest to beat Castlevania

Posted by toptenmaterial on Wed Oct 29, 2014 7:38 PM

Hi everyone! About 3 years and a half ago, I was going through a separation and living at a motel in Maine. Wasn't exactly loving life. To gain some purpose, I attempted to beat Castlevania, with the help of some folks from this thread. I was not successful, but it was fun as hell and really helped pull me out of a slump. I will be trying to beat it again now. I think I'll start by reviewing the posts and videos that other AAers have made and posted on this thread. In 2011, I was playing the game on a GBA SP (with the Classic NES Series cart); this time around, I will be using a hacked PSP-3000, without cheats. Wish me luck!

#3101227 What activities haven't been simulated on the Atari 2600?

Turn based strategy (Advance Wars style). Has anyone done that? It could be done.

Circumcision. Actually a very good premise for an Atari game. In order for 2600 games to be successful, they usually have to revolve around a simple gimmick done well. Dragster, for example. My circumcision game will be called Snip the Tip.

#3100797 What's your gaming/ game console history?

Posted by toptenmaterial on Tue Oct 28, 2014 1:20 AM

My first exposer to video games was through my father's IBM PC in the early 80s, and more advanced PCs as the years rolled on. My sister and I saved up all our allowance money and bought an NES, and got hooked on Super Mario Bros, and I've been a die hard Nintendo fan ever since. I got back into gaming as an adult with the advent of the Nintendo DS, which I thought was the coolest thing on earth, and later the Wii, which blew my mind after demo-ing it at Best Buy.

If I had the money I'd pounce on that.

That's what she said! :)

#3090686 So who's winning (hardware sales)?

Posted by toptenmaterial on Sun Oct 12, 2014 3:13 PM

Correct, Sir.
This is actually why I bought the PS4.
E3 2013 came about, and I had been looking forward to what MS was going to do.  I went with the Xbox, then the 360.  May as well continue the cycle, right?  Then the show started and MS was all "DRM, mandatory Kinect, mandatory online, no used games, and oh yeah, we're maybe watching you, but we swear we're not!"
After that Sony came out and was all like "Oh, hey, video games, and oh yeah, 100 bucks cheaper!"
And that's all she wrote.

Don Mattrick got sacked over that, right?

#3044590 I wrote a book

Posted by toptenmaterial on Fri Aug 1, 2014 11:34 AM

I have recently completed my first book! It's a novella consisting of several largely autobiographical short stories, dealing with coming of age in extremely bleak circumstances, war, PTSD, classic rock, and shitting in people's oatmeal. I'm shooting for a physical and ebook release on September 1st! In the meanwhile, here is a link where you can find out more:https://www.facebook.com/pellstories

And, unlike the big chain bookstores, I take trades!  :P

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted!

Greedy college athletes and they're lawyers just cost a lot of good people their jobs and killed a 20 year old franchise. Way to go.

Greed is rife in sports for sure, but I can see it the other way too. It's hard to turn your back on hundreds of millions of dollars being made in your name without you getting a cut.
