#3879983 Atari 8-bit related BBS(s)

Posted by Tillek on Mon Oct 30, 2017 12:51 PM

And I just remembered that doing a little key/legend to explain things is probably important.. I'll do that later tonight.

Just to clarify On Line and Off Line are pretty much self evident... The difference between "Down" and "Off Line" is that "Down" means that it's down, and we know it's down and we know it will be up whenever the issue is fixed. (currently in the case of Lord Cygnus' BBSs that are down because of his move, but will be back up. (There is also an "Uncertain" for when a BBS can't be reached for a bit, but no news is heard).

And any suggestions on how long to wait between cycling through the status.

So just FYI.. Finally got the BBS list up....

It is DB driven, so I still have a bit of work to do with it.  (For one thing, the verify does nothing except pop up a box).

I need to do some work on it once I figure out the best way to make sure it doesn't get abused by the more malicious types, so eventually adding BBSs and editing your own BBS will be available.

The first thing I plan to do though is have some buttons that will shoot out a plain text 80-col and 40-col list (and hopefully even an ATASCII file) that you can just pop your own header on and put it right on your BBS's if you like.

Let me know if there is anything missing or incorrect (especially if you have webpages)... and if you have any comments or suggestions.

If there aren't any issues in a day or two, I'll start passing it around.

I have added the "Indian Idiots" message base on my BBS for the discussion of rude Indians (such as my employer).

Ah... ok... at first glance... I thought this was going to be a Pittsburgh/Cleveland thing... but you're talking about different "Indians"... So we're good.

Because if you were talking about the Cleveland Indians, I'd have had to invoke the 'Too soon' clause.

I run 2 BBSs on Lantronix boxes. I call BBSs on Lantronix boxes with A8's STs and Apples.

Not to be a jerk, but it's not that hard and it's been covered clearly on threads in the 8 bit forums. If you're having problems after reading them I'm sure there are many who can help. Also Lantronix offers a windows device installer app if configuration via serial is an issue. I use Belarc Advisor and PuTTy, but never in regards to my Lantronix boxes.

Alright, combined the list of Atari BBSs that Tillek made along with the BBS list I made back in January of this year, then found some illustrations to replace the ASCII art to get us started.   Functional so far.  We need to flesh out the list and verify all the working BBSs so still a lot for everyone to do.  ;)

Atari BBS List Online

I successfully called every BBS on the list I had with the exception of Toxic Nipple today.  I'll reach out to that SysOp and see if there is an issue or if he took it down.  Jacoby tends to down all his BBSs when he is planning to be away from home for an extended amount of time (doesn't trust the old equipment).

#3826118 Steve Tucker of Atarimax MIA?

Posted by Tillek on Sat Aug 12, 2017 1:29 PM

I'd hardly call this a Steve bashing thread.  There's only one person who posted anything negative that I can see, and everyone else was posting positive comments and/or, something along the lines of "You'll get your order, just be patient".  I do agree that some people could be better with communication when orders aren't shipped as quickly as we may be accustomed to from stores like Amazon.com.

As we've said time and time again... the problem isn't with any particular thread... it's because we're seeing this on an almost bi-weekly or monthly basis.  No sooner does one thread drop off the first page, another seems to take its place... and when it does, the same people bring up the same issues (usually the original poster is new, but the other ones are old rehashing).

I doubt Steve feels harassed or annoyed (and probably doesn't even read threads like this) because he knows how to take care of his business.

People have the right to start threads and ask a question. There's nothing wrong with looking for answers, and everybody hasn't seen all the past threads on the subject.

I doubt the mods will delete anything. People are making a bigger deal over this subject than what it is.

The "big deal" is that maybe he would actually come to this forum.  Maybe others would too and the community would benefit from their participation.

At least one ST provider of great things has walked away from this forum because of the bullshit.  Thankfully, he just chose to make his own site/blog and keep developing his projects.

I personally considered helping Ingio (if you're on the Facebook TT page you'd know who he is, of Thunder/Storm fame).  I'm a software engineer who wants to do more with device drivers but I want a project. (At work, I currently just develop enterprise-level web apps...... not really a challenge).  He's part of a group of hardware developers who have a great handle on the hardware for projects they want to make, but no one in their group can do the software drivers part of it.

I'm totally not interested in helping them... Not because I don't want to.  I really considered it.  I totally want to see their new VME Video card ideas, VME Network card ideas, and their current VME USB card.... but ... no...

Seeing how this "community" treats people working on stuff like this, like AtariMax, demanding instant feedback and results..... F*** that S***.  Sometimes my schedule with work makes demands that are beyond my control.  I won't commit to that because I know the reaction I receive if there is a bug or issue that I can't address in a manner that satisfies people like W1K.

I really hope they find someone willing to put up with the bullshit and people like you who think the attacks against them should be "no big deal".

I've had nothing but great experiences dealing with Atarimax. As a verteran user old enough to remember ordering from magazines and filling out customer response cards I can say anything less than an 8-12 week turnaround in the hobbyist market is a miracle. I'm in a different country so it's an extra 2 - 3 weeks just for customs clearance etc.

When you order anything related to something out of production for 20+ years, expect it not to be instantly available like a pizza from dominoes. Most items are built to order and take time!

Another thought, our $30 order probably might not be worth $100 of time. Don't take offence if communication is a little slow when there's no 1-800 hotline to call.

Hats off to Atarimax for keeping the lights on at all!

Actually that gives me a damn good suggestion to all the retro providers...

"In order to preserve the spirit of our vintage community, all orders will be deliberately delayed 5.5 weeks so that delivery is within the "allow 6-8 weeks for delivery" timeframe."

Oh cool! It's the "let's bash AtariMax" thread... You know what that means!

It must be PAYWEEK!

(cuz.... like.... every two weeks?)

@w1k ... I propose that you shut up (preferably about all things) until docertabum01 tells us he's got his power supply.

(For those who want more information - http://atariage.com/...ybe-others-too/ )

For the record, I will post this link EVERY SINGLE TIME W1K POSTS ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT ATARIMAX and I encourage every other supporter of his to post it as well if they get the opportunity first so that while he points out flaws, everyone can be warned about W1K's own "business acumen".

Steve is a valued member of the Atari community who is overwhelmed from time to time with his day job (which I won't share things about him I know personally, but it's an honorable profession serving others in a meaningful way) and his "hobby" which is spending his free time allowing us to better enjoy OUR vintage computer hobby but always comes through for his customers in the end.

W1K appears to be a troll, a liar and a fraudulent businessperson with an agenda, who not only screwed over docertabum01, but also deliberately ordered from AtariMax (after declaring he wouldn't) during a period where it was known he was having issues, just so he could trash him some more.

... and to you hloberg, as the others before you... You stepped into a minefield you had no way of knowing you walked into... (Which is of course the nature of minefields)....  Sorry, but it is what it is.  You set the stage for trolls like W1K to do their thing, and the troll slayers are going to do their thing.  And as we all learned from the new BattleStar Galactica.... "All of this has happened before and will happen again........... again.............. again.................. again..............."

#3816825 Please! Can we have one more Incognito run?

Posted by Tillek on Sun Jul 30, 2017 9:09 AM

I want to do that as well, though I REALLY wish some millionaire Atari enthusiast would fund replacement keyboard mechanisms - or at least new plungers! - for those cracked, yellow Stackpole keyboard components. Of course, all three of my 800's have the same keyboard mechs and the same issue to some degree or another.

If this is about what we'd REALLY wish for....

But that said, I'm looking forward to the Incognito 2.  I don't have an 800 yet, but if I can get my hands on an incog 2 I'll be getting one (hopefully) to go with my Happy 810's.

Which should round out pretty much what I want from my A8 collection (never really wanted any of the 400/600xl/65xe "lower end" systems).

Thanks for including me. I'll put the list up tomorrow after the keyboard installation.

Well, of course I would!

Trust me, I know how hard it can be to be "accepted".  There are still Atari BBS's here that list long dead BBS's but not mine.  Even the older list... It took me awhile to get back on it even after my system was pretty stable again.

If you exist, you're on the list!
