  1. Good morning! And a very good morning it is if I do say so myself. Nice and sunny about the grounds today, I am indeed enjoying this early spring weather. I thought I'd pop in just to let you all know that in my latest adventure, I've come to be a distinguished owner of a dusty, old Colecovision console with two malfunctioning controllers, a damaged but, now repaired (thanks to my efforts), A/C adapter, Atari 2600 expansion module and Donkey Kong cartridge. I managed to land this and some other fine bits of retro-gaming goodness in battered old box at a local flea market and I simply must say that inspite of the two faulty controllers and a few other minor short comings it is simply smashing! Allow me to present you with a few photos of this wonderous find.
  2. Ouch! The most I ever payed for a game was $75.00 for SF2 (SNES) at K-Mart and that was on sale. The only good thing about the crash was the huge price drop. It's not often that you find new games at Good Will prices.
  3. Gauntlet on the 5200. That sounds marvelous! I honestly can't tell you how many quarters I plopped into the arcade version during my youth. At the time, the wizard was my favorite character then, later the Barbarian and eventually the Valkyrie. Such memories are a thing to treasure. I should also like to see this on the 7800.
  4. You're quite welcome. I've never suffered the pleasure of being a forum mod or admin but, I have done so on a few yahoo groups in the past and so, on some level I can sympathise with the frustrations you must have to put up with. It truly is a tiresome position to hold at times and I for one do not miss it in the least.
  5. This looks like fun. I saw a intro screen for a Phantasm 2600 homebrew on youtube yesterday. From what I could see, it looked like it would be a good one too. We could certainly use more late 70's/early 80's horror films on the 2600.
  6. Exactly. When I was 10 years old I bought my first Atari 2600 ("Darth Vader" version) new in 1985 for $35, and games were in a bin by the checkout aisles for $.99 each. They were big name games too, like Berzerk, Yar's Revenge, Missile Command, and Defender; even Star Raiders with the included keypad controller. This was at Kmart or a similar department store. At the time my older brother told me how our neighbors Ross and Jeff's parents had payed $200 for an Atari 2600 a few years prior, and how Jeff had saved money from shoveling driveways all winter to buy Missile Command for $50. I'm with you guys. I remember things being this way too. A friend of mine got the VCS set for Christmas around '82 or '83 and they told me that it was about 200 dollars. Two years later, my Mom bought me a Coleco Gemini that was on clearance at Zayer department store. We bought most of the games at the Revco Drug store and they were just 2 dollars each and so were the Intellivision games that they had and it was popular games too. Later on, my Mom came home with the Star Raiders/KeyPad package that she'd found cheap at Eckerd's Drug store. During this time, most kids had stuffed their VCS/2600 consoles in the closet and looked at you funny if you mentioned anything to do with video games at all.
  7. Okay, MaximumRecoil. Thank you for the tips. I did manage to clean one side with one of those wedge-shaped pencil erasers but the other side was just too narrow to get in to. If I hadn't been so impatient and hasty, this wouldn't have happened. I knew it was a dumb thing to do but, I guess I was bored and really wanting to play that version of Gyruss on actual hardware. Pioneer4x4, the keychain idea sounds like fun. I'll have to try that.
  8. I tried sending you an email about this on the night that it happened but, it may not have gotten through. I couldn't find the main site's email address at the time so, I just assumed that your yahoo messenger handle would be the same as your email address and tried that. Firefox had told me that it expired at 6:56 pm on whatever day it was. I had the info saved as a text but, I must have deleted it because I can't find it now. Since you've solved the problem, it no longer matters anyway but, I just came across a new problem and I'm not sure if it's on my end or if it's something else. I have been trying to register an account at the Atari Age Store but, it wont go through or except it. Here is what it says every time that I try... Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: open(/tmp/sess_c40de489816b80363cb540be6a09b058, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in /home/atariage/public_html/store/include/classes/class.sessions.php on line 25 Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /home/atariage/public_html/store/include/classes/class.sessions.php:25) in /home/atariage/public_html/store/include/classes/class.sessions.php on line 25 Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/atariage/public_html/store/include/classes/class.sessions.php:25) in /home/atariage/public_html/store/libsecure.php on line 79 Warning: Unknown: open(/tmp/sess_c40de489816b80363cb540be6a09b058, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in Unknown on line 0 Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). 9. I'm sorry to have to say that some of you chaps are going to be a bit sore with me. You see, I made a bit of a booboo whilst trying to figure out how to go about getting that blasted Gyruss cart to come apart and decided to do a bit of drilling which only resulted in a strange and unpleasant smell but, pressing on, I tried cutting it open with my nifty Dremmel tool and that yielded results none too good as well. Lastly I tried a hacksaw but, in my clumsiness, kept slipping and cutting myself in the process so, I consulted with my brother who informed me that it looked as though it had been heat-welded closed from the factory so, I asked him "Well, just how in the bloody hell do I open it up without damaging the circuit board?!" He told me that he could pry it open with his hammer but, instead he simply tapped either side of the cart with the hammer and it popped right open with no damage at all. Unfortunatly however, I myself had done all of the damage necasary with my foolish drill bit earlier on and made somewhat of a hole in the main chip which would explain the unpleasant smell. Even so, I proceeded to clean the contacts and test it out in the hopes that maybe I'd get lucky and get some measure of fuctionality out of it anyway but, alas, it just wasn't to be I'm afraid. Not too much of a loss though as I have checked on ebay and found that there are a few others available at somewhat reasonable prices. On the plus side, I did discover some interesting details that I should like to pass on. The chipless side of the pcb reads "12532 REV C" which I presume to mean that it is the third version of that game. Also, further down it reads "ETCH SIDE". The chip reads "TMS4964-45NL", followed by "8419L", followed by "ZA69022", followed by "12601something45" which I can't make out because of the hole. It goes on to read "198somethingB" it's the hole again, followed by "SINGAPORE". I wonder if it would be possible to simply replace the damaged chip and upload a gyruss rom back in to it. Does anyone know if that could work?
  10. OH. Silly me. I voted incorrectly. I'm partial to the 6 switch model with the wood grain panel. I find it to be very stylish and nostalgic of that late 70's/early 80's appearance. I have a few of these models lying around and one in particularly great condition that I purchased from a local flea market vender/enthusiast a few years ago as a gift to my brother for a mere $20.00. The vender had actually stripped, cleaned and rebuilt it and I must say that it is a marvelous peice!
  11. This was one of my favorites as a kid too. I don't really remember how far I ever got as I haven't played it in I don't know how long but, I do remember playing it frequently and insisting to my friends and nephews that it was a great game.
  12. I've never seen nor even heard of these before but, they are certainly unique and the art work is impressive on some as well. I'm particularly taken with the 4 in 1 (1) with the red Lancia and the Pitfall cart. The fact that you've gathered so many is quite a remarkable feat to say the least. You must be very pleased.
  13. I read in an old book once (maybe one of those "History of video games" books) that the "Great Video Game Crash of 1983/1984" was actually a result of a guy that Nolan Bushnel hired to take his place at Atari while he (Nolan) took off to live it up off of the wealth he had made. The man he had put in charge was supposed to have been a succesful jewelry sales expert but, part of the problem was that not only did he have no interest in video games but, actually hated them and made a series of bad decisions that ultimately lead to the crash. The day that the crash was said to have started on, the stock market was said to have dropped over 30% as a result. I can't really remember the rest of the story because the book I read about it in was something I read probably more than 15 years ago. I don't know how much of that story is true but, I do recall that as boy of 12 that Atari VCS/2600 games could be found in drugstores as cheap as two dollars each and a few months later, only fifty cents each. During this time, my only notice of the crash was that many of my friends and relatives no longer played their systems and seemed to think that something was wrong with me for still wanting to play.
  14. Mmmm... Well, that's hard to say, Lad. What with all of the over-pricing and over-paying that's going on across nearly all retro consoles found on ebay, craigslist and many of the other other middle-man sales sites it has of late become somewhat of guessing game as to what a fair offering price would be. Perhaps you could devise a better opinion of that by finding and studying a few collectors guides and comparing the values mentioned there-in until you arrive at an offer that seems fair to both you and the seller. I wish you good luck in the choice you decide on.
  15. I've been hoping for a home brew port of Dragon Fire to the 5200 for many years. Yes! That would be quite a bit of fun, I imagic.
