  1. I have found some additional pokes, which are not in AR faq file: 8ACB Gems 65,536+ 8ACC Gems 256+ 8ACD Gems 0+ 8ACE Jewels 16,777,216+ 8ACF Jewels 65,536+ 8AD0 Jewels 256+ 8AD1 Jewels 0+ I couldn't find the ones for potions and treasure finding. I also have some questions to all you more advanced AR people: Is it possible to combat a Spectre or Arch-Mage? There was no effect when I used a Longsword. I eventually disengaged and left. How to successfully combat a Small Green Dragon? I remember slaying it back in the old days, no chances this time. Which mobs can get you a Crystal Plate Mail? I remember getting it in the old days, but not this time. Ditto for the best weapon? What was the name of this magical sword superior to Longsword?
  2. Knock, knock? Anyone still here? Got my AR sim char to level 9 yesterday (longsword, plate mail, started stuffing my granite bank account etc.). It's a blast. It's been 30 years.
  3. I must say I read the last couple of posts with interest. I agree with what was said: the RPGs these days are plain dumb (well I still play them LOL), the big bugdets need to attract the masses to earn the profit for the big developer companies etc etc. There is one significant problem with the indie developers thou - it takes time and effort. What is usually done by a large team has to be done by an individual. Surely, you can take shortcuts (as mentioned), but it still takes time. I think only a percentage of the indie projects gets through. Still, I must say I'm surprised that AR never really had a modern remake, other than the Acrin's one. I mean c'mon... AR deserves one. Maybe now that Philip Price spoke, hopefully, more people will be attracted to this forum and AR will become more popular among the oldtimers. People like Tickled_Pink generously offered to contribute (or even write it by himself). We will have a remake, sooner or later.
  4. @ Tickled_Pink: I'm not planning to be exact with positioning the models vs. the original game. I mean my plan is to be as close to the original as possible (it has to be instantly recognizable as AR and feel like AR), but it's the enirely different gaming platform compared to the 8bit Atari from the 80s. If we try to copy the original too closely, I think the result wouldn't be correct. As to the models and the overall 'look' of the City, I believe the current concept art images are too bright and 'warm'. The City was rather cold. I'm evaluating a more rough version of the models and adding more blue color. I can always prepare both versions and ask the fans for opinions/vote. No idea as to the hidden areas yet. Although I think they need to be incorporqated in some way (secret passages maybe), as they were an integral part of AR. This is quite a significant amount of work. If you had some AR remake ideas/thoughts, you're more than welcome to join/help, if you wish. In any department. @ Jim Norris: To be honest music is not one of my strengths. I tried to compose online, never came up with acceptable quality. My plan is to (of course) re-compose AR music and probably add some additional music themes. But again it has to feel like AR. If I find someone willing to contribute, great. If not, I will need to do it on my own and it will be a matter of trial and error. One other important piece of the AR remake, which I'd like to do is to add a storyline. Something, which Philip Price had in mind, but what was virtually impossible back then. The storyline as per Philip Price with aliens, matrix, Acrinimiril, discovering the AR truth, a choice what to do next etc.
  5. As a quick update, I'm working on the core building models. I also prepared a basic GUI. Here is the result. It's still a "teaser", but the GUI is ready to be implemented. Here are the building models, still working on them.
  6. Philip, can I please ask how you envision Floating Gate? Aparently you intended it to be a gateway between an alien ship and Alternate Reality (a Matrix of sorts). To be honest I see Floating Gate as Stargate: ... ... I've heard opinions that it's simply a door, but floating above ground, which I don't share. Others say a portal. What was your original idea, if I may ask? I admit that this is for the AR remake project, as I cannot decide what shape to create in a 3D space. My problem is that a stargate wouldn't really fit in the middle of the city. And yes, I mostly focus on the 3D model (for practical reasons) than the process (the process is to be coded in the future). If we take the Matrix approach, characters are wired into the system (AR in this case) and are virtually deployed in the City via such a gate. I take it that the aliens (Matrix agents) can also wire in via a gate (or gates). So the gate would represent a digital connection, but it still has to look like something. For the sake of comparison, there it is, as you made it 30 years ago:
  7. Xebec's Demise - I know you wanted to lure Philip, but can I please join as well? I saw your thread and the idea seems interesting. Besides, I need to refresh my memory for the purpose of producing the AR remake. So... in short... I created a character. I was quite pleased with the stats, yet unfortunately there was no Dagger nor Stiletto in any of the Smiths. After desperately whacking some Muggers with bare fists, I gave up and restarted. And guess what... either the City is more difficult than what I remember or I played lousy. The character didn't last long. I did much better with the 3rd char: As you can see, I'm still struggling, both short on HP and Coppers. What can I say... the game is still great after all these years. I haven't played the original AR for a good couple of years. You have everything you would want to have: depth, mystery, challange. Capturing the AR atmosphere in a modern remake will be tough.
  8. The Minecraft version seems much better and deeper (although the graphics is Minecraft - I'm not saying better or worse, just Minecraft style). You seem to have done something the Skyrim guy couldn't, namely you coded much of the functionality. How about the encounters? I'm not a big Minecraft fan, but isn't it the the encounters in Minecraft take place only at night? Just to keep everyone posted, I've already started working on the models. I'll probably release a new version once I have some textured models deployed in Unity, so people can comment if this feels like AR. If yes, great. If no, we will redo it. Give me a week or so. Here is a WIP of one of the buildings:
  9. Looks really good. Thanks for posting this video. Well again, the problem is that the resources and functionality is from Skyrim. It looks like Skyrim. Can you quaff potions? Use the healer? How about day/night cycle? Or even how about Dragonskin Robe? I'm afaraid not. And Skyrim modding licence will never allow that, since after all the mods are to promote Skyrim not AR. A good thing is that you can use Skyrim's resources and engine to put together a map of the City relatively quickly. Then you hit the wall. I'm curious were there any other AR creation attempts?
  10. I'm amazed to see the Minecraft version. I read about it on Acrin's forum, but I was under the impression that it was a simple import of City walls into Minecraft. I had no idea that you built the entire City and Dungeon. Incredible amount of work and effort went into this! I think I've also read (was it on Acrin's forum?) that someone made or was about to make AR as a Skyrim mod. The problem with mods is... well, it's quite convenient to use the main game's tools and resources, but unfortunately you cannot code AR functionality. Yes, my sentiments exactly. I think ARO'97 was such an attempt, but obviously it is no more. Well, it just hurts that a modern 3D remake of AR has never been made.
  11. Yes, same here. I've always played AR under the impression that the City was founded due to some spaceship crash. Xebec according to the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xebec
  12. Greetings AR fans and AR lovers, As some of you already know, I've started an Alternate Reality 3D remake project and called it Parallel Realm. It is supposed to be a modern remake taking this great game onto a modern 3D gaming platform using Unity engine. http://parallelrealm.byethost4.com/ Some FAQ: The images on the website are not from the game, at least not yet. They serve as concept images to show how the game might eventually look. The current downloadable verison or a browser version is not a completed remake, but barely a 'skeleton' prototype. More stuff will be added in future releases until eventually the game takes its final shape. A corrected file was recently uoploaded (both as downloadable and browser version), which fixed a nasty bug in the character controller script. Hopefully the character movement is better now. The project is a non-commercial one. I will respect that the copyrights belong to Philip Price and will never distribute a paid version without his knowledge and aproval. (which is actually not the purpose of this project) No IOS version is planned at this stage. I'm not planning this to be MMO at this stage. Although some online functionality might be implemented (e.g. comparing the characters online). Building in the MMO functionality might eventually be the case, but it's a long way. It's going to take time. I will focus on the City only for now. Once the City is done and functional, only then I will proceed to work on the Dungeon. Eventually (of course) all 7 scenadios should be recreated/created. I'm looking for any kind of feedback, ideas and/or contributions. Particularly I'd like to capture the AR atmosphere/charm in modern graphics. In other words after the players' characters are deployed next to the Floating Gate, they should immadiately feel that this is AR. So if you know what makes AR AR, please share your opinion. Also, some people helped with a decision of what type of graphics would be apropriate. See this post: http://arproject.50.....html#p20622484
  13. Could Acrin maybe go for the IOS version of ARX? That would rock. I last checked the ARO'97 website and I think it has expired and some other company grabbed the domain. Too bad, I was always wondering what happened to ARO. I remember reading some blog or a log of the conversation (I think it was Philip and Gary) and there seemed to be much excitement about the project. And then what... never really heard what happened? I assumed daily jobs got in the way.
  14. It seems that AR had this effect on many people in the past. Yes, I remember playing the game passionately in the old days, mapping out the city, knowing every corner of the map by heart. I could tell you how to go from square A to square B by heart without looking at the screen. The music was (still is) gorgious and I would sing the songs along on the bus, in my spare time etc. It's an unforgettable game. And besides, look all the concept of the current MMO was there. The game pioneered the concept, which developed and got so popular these days. I'm talking MMO and player interaction (e.g. Facebook). Yes, I also admire Acrin's project and hope he will be able to continue. I hope I will be able to start with my project at http://parallelrealm.byethost4.com/ I was tossing with the idea to re-create/create AR in a form of a modern 3D game for years. The two projects can be complementary, as they have a different purpose, yet are based on the same concept and game. If you are a purist, you will launch ARX. If you want AR as a modern 3D game, you will play my remake. Not to mention that Acrin is there for over 4 years and close to finalizing, while I have barely just started. It means a lot to me that Acrin basically OK'ed my initiative (I think he had/has some plans regarding Unity). It would mean even more if Philip would, too. Either way, it would be fantasic if Philip could comment on that. I wish to state that the goal here is not commercial (I can of course speak for myself only). We're fans, enthusiasts. The game was never finished and someone needs to tell out the story in full. The best person is of course Philip, but as he is tied up with his daily job... well, someone else needs to step forth, if you agree. Philip, if you or anyone else would like to contact me or send any comments, my email is silvereed7 @ gmail . com. That would be grand!
