#4113354 UnoCart-2600 : a DIY SD multi-cart for the 2600

Posted by cimmerian on Fri Sep 14, 2018 11:06 AM

Oh definitely the game is being made for the Atari 2600. It mirrors the situation of games that are being developed with the advanced hardware inside of a Harmony Cart. During development for some games you need a Harmony Cart to play and test them but when they're sold as a complete game on it's own cartridge it has everything inside the cart needed to run.

To currently play THIS work-in-progress game on an Atari 2600 from a binary file you need an UnoCart, but when/if this game goes to retail, the cartridge would contain everything that's needed to run. People who buy these games don't necessarily know what's going on inside the cartridge, all they know is that they can plug it into their Atari VCS and it works. :-)

So the game is not made for the Atari2600 at all then?

This homebrew is not able to run on the Harmony OR the Stella emulator, only a UnoCart (hence my purchase)! I'm not able to reveal anything about the game until the broadcast so I can't really say anything more. Should be very interesting!!

So homebrew that can't run on Harmony? Does it utilize the arm coprocessor? I hope it comes to the AA store. If not, I may have to buy an UNO... icon_shades.gif

Hopefully the game developer will release a ROM of the WIP game after we show it on the stream. :-)

My UnoCart is jealous...

ZeroPage Homebrew has just placed an order for an UnoCart (thanks MacRorie!!) and we will be debuting the very first (I believe) UnoCart exclusive game in an upcoming ZeroPage Twitch livestream!

This WIP game has not been publicly announced anywhere so stay tuned to our social media and our AtariAge forum thread for more details! :-) We're really looking forward to playing around with the UnoCart on the show!

#4112958 The 2018 Atari Awards!

Posted by cimmerian on Thu Sep 13, 2018 9:12 PM

Definitely! "Best Technical Achievement" is a category under consideration as there have been some mind blowing audio/visual games coming out lately for the VCS!

Has the category of "Best Technical Achievement" for a specific platform been mentioned yet? I think that's an important one. There are some HB games on the 2600 that just don't seem physically possible, but they exist and it's amazing. I like this category idea because it will encourage talented devs to swing for the fences, to milk every bit of power out of our classic consoles, and be rewarded for their technical brilliance in the process.

Please let us know if we've missed any games/hacks/demos that have been worked on in 2018 that you think should be included in the 2018 Atari Awards!! :-)

We don't want to be overloaded with too many categories but it's truly surprising how many games have been worked on or finished so far in 2018! We are definitely looking for more possible categories before we finalize and release the category list. Keep the suggestions coming for categories and games, we don't want to leave any out.

The list of games, hacks and demos released in 2018 is coming soon...

IMO we shouldn't create too many categories before we know how many people are participating. Else the result might become random.

Thank you so much for holding the Stan Awards back in the day. We're really looking forward to honouring all the hard work that is put into these games, hacks and demos. :-)

YES!  Finally someone has picked this up again and ran with it.  I had SO much fun doing the old Stan Awards!  Of course, back then the pool of nominees was MUCH smaller!  Can't wait for this!

A very good point! Arenafoot and I forget that the average person is not as geeky as we are about record keeping and release dates and such, hahah! We will  post a list shortly so people will be able to take a look the 2018 titles (so far). :-)

A lot of people will not know about the exact release dates. Therefore I suggest that someone compiles a (hint) list of the games which can be voted for.
