  1. I did the mod, and it looked great on an old 13" CRT, but I hooked it up to a Samsung LED HDTV and wasn't impressed with the image. It wasn't terrible, but it seemed a little blurrier than the RF, and the colors were washing together a bit. So, I reinstalled the RF to confirm and came to the same conclusion. I think I'll probably just stick with the RF at this point.
  2. If I were to use a 1K trim pot in the place of R1, do I need to put terminal 1 to ground, or just hook terminal 3 towards +12V, and terminal 2 towards Video_In, and leave terminal 1 disconnected?
  3. Nice! All my parts are set to arrive on thursday, so I'll post some results too maybe this weekend.
  4. Thanks for the input, everyone. I haven't made a decision yet. I really don't mind making a learning experience, especially if it appears I'll be able to reverse the process in the event of unfavorable results. Don't be too surprised if you see a new thread in a couple weeks with me crying about wrecking my $10 investment. One quick question - With the RF module gone, would I still need the shielding all the way round the logic board?
  5. I'm afraid I'm going to waste my time and end up destroying the picture so let's fight about this some more (sorry) Here's what she looks like through a vcr and into a video capture device. I do notice some ghosting and the wavy variations in the background. It's not breaking my heart. Am I wasting my time removing the RF and going direct video output via one of the approved mod methods? I just prefer the idea of ditching the VCR for a cleaner more modern setup.
  6. I'm going to try not to turn into someone who sacrifices weekends to dig through a barrel at the swap meet, but I'm definitely watching out for more in this price range on Ebay
  7. Good info, thanks. There are a few other spots of bad corrosion on the pad, so maybe I'll start with the syringe to fill in some of the easy spots. Then, if the repair to the tiny traces doesn't work, I'll go for the wire fix.
  8. Hmmm, like some of this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/0-2ML-Silver-Conductive-Wire-Glue-Paste-Paint-Electronics-PCB-Repair-Application-/371012234456?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item56620d6cd8 Might be worth playing with for $2 as a temp solution.
  9. I just received the Intellivision 2609 I got on Ebay for $10. From the sticker on the front, looks like someone paid $5.95 at a thrift store for it. Hooked up a direct RF adapter since it didn't come with the switch, and fired her up. Blank screen. After a little work on the cartridge connector with a q-tip and rubbing alc, we were up and running with a title screen! But no response from the remotes. Popped her open, and out fell a handful of legos and popcorn. Neat! It's kind of fun working on this thing with the very tools my TV repairman grandpa used to repair his old Intellivision as we abused the heck out of it. This one is no different, with the cable insulation yanked out of one of the remote grommets. Gave it a short once-over, cleaned up some terminals, but it didn't look that bad, so on to the remotes. One was pretty clean inside except for a little corrosion at the terminal that connects to the flex matrix pad. Cleaned that up and on to the one with the yanked insulation. It was SO STICKY inside. Like it got an orange juice bath a million years ago. Same corrosion on the top connector but way worse, corrosion everywhere. Then, I managed to wear the metal completely off while cleaning a jumper to one of the pairs of side buttons... Is there any way to repair that, or do I just need to set an ebay search for the flex matrix and wait for someone to sell one? Anyways, we're cooking with gas now and Space Armadaing our faces off. No loss in function yet since all 4 side buttons do the same thing in this game. RF output looks decent, but thinking about a video output mod.
  10. jmetal88, can you describe the changes you made in regards to this diagram from Solarfox's tutorial? I'm assuming all the differences are in that top part.
  11. Indeed... No rush. I'll get her cleaned up and tested and spend some quality time on Space Armada with the old RF until then. Thanks!
  12. I know this thread is aging, but I am planning to tackle this same mod on a 2609 I plan to give to my younger brother for his birthday, and have limited electrical experience. So I have a couple of nervous noob concerns. Can I assume that I can place all of these circuits and the shunt on the same small piece of perf board? Also, does it matter whether I'm using solid core jumpers or stranded? I'm thinking stranded is at least better for tying back to the CPU board since it's more flexible and less likely to break the solders while moving stuff around? I have a box full of random gauges of wire, coax and romex, so I was just going to cannibalize from there and order the rest from taydaelectronics.com Thanks for any encouragement and advice you can offer. I'd be happy to post the progress and results if this is still an appropriate thread to use. Can't wait to start shaming his annoying butt at Sea Battle just like good old times.
