  1. OK. I get it. I found a scan of the manual and it says to press "Game Level", but, I'm not sure which key that corresponds to in Altirra in the 5200 mode only using the keyboard. Thanks!
  2. Hi: This question relates, not so much to Pacman itself, but, how Altirra handles it. I am referring to the 5200 version vs. the 800 version of Pacman. I figured one would be very similar to the other, since they run on similar hardware, but, the 5200 version appears harder by default. For example, I have a particular move (moving up, then all the way left, then slightly down, to get a power pellet. In the 800 version, I get there with no problem. With the 5200 version, I'm eaten almost immediately after I go up. Is there some kind of player difficulty setting? if so, how do I change it in 5200 mode? Or, is the maze different or the ghost monster movement different? Thanks!
  3. Hi: Think I got it now, thanks to the explanation. Altirra's firmware manager now recognizes the first 8K block as Missile Command, the 2nd block of 8K as BASIC Rev C. and the last 16K as the XEGS firmware. Just wanted this for completeness. After all, as a blind user, I can't do much with any game really--I just wanted to see if I could get the thing to work. I can get Pacman to a power pill (or whatever they're called) sometimes. Anyway, gonna hit the sack now. Thanks again.
  4. Hi: Ok, thanks to that explanation, I split it correctly--Altirra's firmware manager recognizes the first 8K as Missile Command, the second block of 8K as BASIC REV C, and the last 16K as the XEGS kernel.
  5. Hi: I'm just curious about the XEGS experience. I have seen a rom collection called "emuroms.zip" containing a few roms, but, the XEGS rom isn't in there. However, the one that is in the MAME collection is called "c101687.rom". Some searching reveals that it is all the roms together in 1 32-K file. To get Altirra to run it, do I need to split it up some way for Altirra to detect and use it? It doesn't seem to like the full 32-K image. Thanks!
  6. Hi: Some sites may use the old link from hrmlesslion.com, thus, they'll never get the latest. I made that mistake, just bookmarking the link. However, when you switched to using Github to distribute, I observed that. So, every-so-often, I check harmlesslion.com to make sure I have the correct link. That's always the safest.
  7. Hi: The Whatsnew file is current also. Latest version is Classic99 QI399.066
  8. Hi: Screen reader support working like a champ, using NVDA. Great job!
  9. Just to say a quick thanks from the blind phone man. Just downloaded this and added to my collection. BTW, still rocking this with the NVDA screen reader.
  10. Hi Avery and others: I just gave a very brief demo of Altirra's new accessibility feature using UI automation on a blindness-related podcast, called "Living Blindfully". Since version 4.20 is still in testing phase, I didn't give a Web address yet. I do, however, plan to post the address to the podcast once v4.20 comes out of beta. If you'd like to listen to my brief demo, you can go to this address: http://livingblindfully.com/246 Look for the segment that says, "Be my AI and more old technology that is new again [1:37:54]" Sorry this was a quick-and-dirty demo. Again, I'll mention more once the v4.20 release comes out. Cheers!
  11. Hi: I found a copy of the manual on archive.org. According to it, you first load "SAM", which is the program you use for phonetic input. If you want true text-to-speech, you load another binary program "RECITER" which gives you the rest of the functionality--this is the program which asks you "Low or High memory". That's apparently how the original version worked. In the cracked version, both the SAM and RECITER programs are together, and, you have both phonetic input and text-to-speech, whichever you want, by using either the ]SAM or ]RECITER commands (abbreviated by first 2 letters). The original SAM program would load the RECITER program with the ]LOAD command. Now, if you type ]LO you get the cracked by 1103 message.
  12. Hi again: Well, from what I'm seeing, all the versions of SAM I can find seem to be "cracked" by something called 1103. It appears the SAM and RECITER programs were 2 separate programs originally. Anyone remember how the original disk was done? Was the original disk copy-protected? I'm guessing it was, if a group had to crack it.
  13. Ah. Thanks. From the stuff I read, I didn't see the ]pk thing either. Thanks for clarifying this. This is all more or less new to me, as I never owned any of the Comodore computers when I was younger. I knew about SAM, but, it wasn't enough motivation to purchase the C64. Anyway, fascinating stuff Oh, I found the GUESSNUM program on a disk of programs relating to SAM at https://www.rbbs.be/bam/C64-PLASTIC-8/210.d64 This disk even has a little talking adventure game on it. Probably some other bgoodies on that site, but, doubt if they're anything I can use. Thanks again!
  14. Hi: From the documentation I could find, if you loaded it high, you got more memory for your program but some functionality was not there--maybe the extra commands added into BASIC. Some of the programs, though, seemed to work anyway. Interestingly, the documentation acted like the RECITER program was different, and that there was a DOS Wedge included, but, I only found one machine language program, and, that has been titled "SAM/RECITER" or "SAM.OBJ" depending on the copies I looked at. Again, I am not familiar enough with the Comodore family to know what I should be looking for. The GUESSNUM program is missing from copies I found, but, one of the copies I found has a Poker program included. Anyone have or know more about the original disk? Thanks!
