  1. Our intention is to collect as much historical background to the Why, When, Who and How GPL came to be. Please contribute by commenting to this topic. Things like : 1. When did it all start ? 2. Why ? 3. Who worked on it's development and interpreter ? 4. What was the real purpose ? 5. How does it compare to other languages ? 6. What can we do with it today ? 7. Coding in GPL in the 1980's compared to 2020 the stark difference. 8. What commercial software was written in GPL ? 9. Who were the important people around this language ? 10. Links to important material. If we can collect snippets of information from as many people as possible we can then compile it into a solid web page that will serve as a historical snapshot of this quirky yet beautiful language that time almost forgot. Thanks for your contributions. We will share a link to the webpage that will contain all you need to know about GPL as soon as we set it up.
  2. Thanks for your feedback. We are not into getting to any level of technicality as we want to keep it a light read for those who simply are interested to know a little more about gpl and why it was so obscure when compared to other languages. I will inform my friend and see if he would want to talk to you using skype etc.. but as far as I am concerned I feel that a few pointers to high level info on gpl is enough for now.
  3. Thanks for your explanation, it is clear enough for me to appreciate the main difference and why it may not be that popular today.
  4. Hi RXB, me and a friend of mine are interested in doing a small write up on GPL, covering things like : The History How it came to be and why it was developed Who came up with the idea How TI developers coded with GPL in the early days (1980/1) and what they produced with it. How much easier it is today with modern laptops, compilers and emulators. The difficulty way back in the 80's to code in this language if you were not working with TI - Gram Kracker - expensive - limited information - no internet to lookup things. What was done with it and what can it be compared to in the modern age Dates and as much factual information as possible on the language and achievements like your cartridge (RXB). Do you think you can help us out with some of our questions ? or maybe better still add other stuff which should be preserved for histories sake. Our plan was that before we post anything on GPL we pass it by you for review on correctness. We will also include as many links as we can find on it's syntax and other historical writings we can find on the internet. Thanks in advance - David
  5. Thanks Ksarul for your detailed explanation. I think you summed it up really well. In fact I am amazed in how much detail you could remember, impressive.
  6. Thanks for your answer. Forth looks very interesting and I am curious to understand why it is not more popular today as a modern language instead of Java, C# or C++ on modern machines.
  7. Hi Lee What I meant was that can the product of forth be placed in a cartridge and be executed without requiring your forth cart. Like when one writes an assembly program you just plugin that product in a TI and it comes up as menu number 2. The assembled and linked code does not need anything else to run. Thanks David
  8. Hi Lee, Can you compile the forth program and store it as a stand alone application that can run in its own cartridge or have the BIN file in a final grom 99 SD card? Is there already games that were made using forth ?
  9. Hi I have a curious question for the GPL experts. What did the original TI developers use to code in GPL? I mean did they have GRAM chips hooked up to their TI 99 4A and after they finish all the testing they burn their byte code on GROMS using some sort of eprom programmer which was linked to this whole super system? I am interested in those who worked before GRAM Kracker was invented, I mean 1980 and 1981.
  10. Can you try removing everything and leave just FG99 cartridge. This game runs on an unexpanded machine and I am not sure if there is some device that it is interfering with.
  11. All, For those who will be burning this onto GROM please use this attached file. It has a friendlier menu title. brkfreeg.bin
  12. I do not know how to do it myself but I am sure someone in this great community can assist you in how to flash a GROM chip with my Bin file. What I think needs to be done is split the BIN file into 5 8K chunks with a binary splitter and then burn the first 5 slots of bank 0 with these 5 split parts. But I do not know how to see the banks and slots in the EPROM programmer you will be using.
  13. Thanks Opry99er, it was a dream project I had since 1982 to do a physical cart game, but it only came a reality with great work done by people like Tursi (Classic 99), Ralph B (xdt99), Ksarul (Ubergrom), Rasmus (Magellan), Ciro (Testing) and many others who took the time to keep TI 99/4a alive till today.
  14. Now that is possible but not trivial. You either will need to have the necessary hardware to re-flash the ROM or else you need to send it to someone who has necessary hardware to do it for you. It is practically an UBERGROM which is locked onto one game.
