I recently got interested about Atari 8 bit computers and I decided to learn to program games for it. I have some background in programming in general and have made a few games before. I started by reading a beginner level book about BASIC. Made a simple game with it. Noticed the slowness of it. I decided then to read a machine language book. I learned how the language works and how to do simple stuff like calculations and control the program flow but not much else. It is such a different way of doing things it still feels a bit too much to program a game, like Pong for an example, with straight assembly. I started reading De Re Atari, but I get the feeling it is meant for more established developer.
Any tips what to do / read next? There was one other interesting book: "Atari-Player-Missile-Graphics-in-BASIC" but I'm wondering if BASIC PMG is in any way applicaple to assembly? Or would it be better to just stick with assembly?
