I also sent in for this pamphlet after seeing the offer in an Activision ad in an issue of Ahoy! magazine, probably in late 1984. It was both really cool, and fairly disappointing, as it gives the appearance of a game of Pitfall! with Harry running across the screen, but because it's just a bunch of machine language data statements POKEd in through BASIC, it's barely customizable and not useful as the basis for an actual game, and actually has very little educational value. Crane chose to give us kids something flashy rather than something with substance. Still, it's a neat artifact from the time, and it was better than nothing. I can't think of any other successful game developers or publishers that even offered this much. I was thinking of it a couple months ago and spent weeks digging through my basement trying to find it; I haven't seen it in years, probably decades, but I can't imagine I threw it out and I have a lot of stuff from back then still, even old school workbooks going back to the '70s. For all I know it could have been used as a bookmark and it's hidden inside one of the hundreds of books and magazines I have. Anyway, I've pretty much given up on finding it but would love to purchase one if anyone would like to sell. I realize the .pdf is online and I'll look into doing a reproduction if I have no other choice. Thanks.

Less than 2 weeks away! We have a few speakers confirmed, including Marty Goldberg, speaking on little-known details of the exciting, convoluted events of Spring/Summer 1984 as they pertain to Commodore, Atari, Amiga, and Jack Tramiel.

Last year there were some fantastic collections of software and hardware being sold by individuals (I got some great stuff) Jeri Ellsworth is rumoured to attend again, and there should be a couple very interesting speakers. I'd say either NHL '94, or NHL '98. NHL '94 has a lot of fans, and is probably the most fondly-remembered of them all. 96-98 are basically the same game, with roster updates and some little extras included each year.

I'll be there again, looking forward to it as usual! I think this'll be my 5th time? I'm very excited to hear that opcode and Songbird will be there!

This side of the border we say "zed-eighty", with the exception of the people who grew up watching too much American Sesame Street. re: 6502, I've always said "sixty-five oh two" and have rarely noticed anyone saying anything different at the various geeky shows I go to every year (World of Commodore in Toronto, variously named Commodore expos in Chicago, and Midwest Gaming Classic outside Milwaukee). Though maybe that's because I'm doing most of the talking? Or maybe it's a difference between the Atari and Commodore camps?

Yeah, I should have mentioned it's just for archival purposes; it had accumulated thousands of spam posts so posting was disabled, and finally, all those have been cleaned up. Though if the current organizers can't keep a forum up, maybe we should at least take that back? I agree with Thomas, that's a very large part of the fun of the competition.

I've been hoping to convince the people who ran the 2002-2004 compos involved again, but no luck so far.

Yeah, Frogs & Flies is great for kids if you put it on the easy setting so the frog just jumps safely back and forth between the lily pads, and can't fall in the water. Bowling is a surprisingly good game for younger kids. In general, any game that requires very little joystick dexterity is a good choice. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong aren't very good choices to start with, imo. Berzerk is a bit better choice.

I'm planning on going again for my 4th time, I think. 2004, 2006 and 2007 so far. From Ontario, I have to drive through Minnesota and then across Wisconsin, but it's worth it!
