#3941054 Atari Activision Patches - Tell us your stories new and old!

Posted by Bobbety_F on Sun Jan 21, 2018 1:33 PM

I was back on the patch quest this weekend and managed to get the score for Pitfall II. I've uploaded the video to my YouTube channel. If there's a less efficient, more inelegant example of Pitfall II play, I'd like to see it;-) I'll be blogging about my pitiful Pitfall II playthough in greater detail in due course:-)

I've been trying to get the patches since last May, and so far I'm twelve in, with the lastest being Freeway and Sky Jinks. Some attempts I'm having to put 'on-ice' for a while, as I'm finding them so hard! These include Enduro, Barnstorming (absolutely brutal! I'm okay for the first five barns...and then it all goes a little wibbly-wobbly!), and Beamrider.

I'm thoroughly enjoying my attempts (or what I call my Patch Quest), but it may take years for me to get them all...or, indeed, any more at all!

I write about my quest for the patches on my blog here, on Atariage, (here's a link to one of the patch-themed entries http://atariage.com/...phical-musings/ :-)), and I also gave my thoughts on my first ten conquests on YouTube channel , albeit in the guise of my youtube character Lord Fortescue!

The patch I'm currently focusing on is Pitfall II. By the end of the year, I might make it to the 99,000;-)

#3739701 Two player Freeway - much more fun than I thought it would be!

Posted by Bobbety_F on Wed Apr 12, 2017 5:55 AM

In the box with my scart-modded 2600 was Freeway, a game which previously didn't really interest me ("Er, so, it's like Frogger but you can't move left or right... right?")...but much to my surprise it was great fun, especially with two players. Has anyone else been very pleasantly surprised like this? If so, with which game/s?

I enjoyed Freeway so much, I made a video (just one-game length long). For ease of capture, however, I emulated (Android/ Nvidea Shield TV). There's lots of silliness in this, so feel free to ignore:-)

#3722263 I've just discovered...Spider Fighter!

I realise that this is a game I had no business being unaware of...but I was, and I just lost the best part of Saturday to it...and I couldn't be happier to have done so:-) I became determined to reach the 40,000 needed for the Activision patch, despite knowing that I'd never actually receive one in 2017! I didn't get there, and the more I played after my highest score (around the 30,000...ish), the worse I became. After playing, I Googled around a bit, and discovered that this game is considered fairly easy...and 40, 000 therefore pretty easy to reach. Ah well...I still had an absolute blast with it.

Are there any more 2600 shooters as awesome as this that I should know about!?

This gameplay is emulated on the Android emulator, through the Nvidia Shield TV. I have the real cart (minus packaging) in my Amazon basket, but am holding off final purchase in case this wasn't released in Pal territories. Anyone know for certain?

#3719422 Frogger...still froggin awesome!

Did you know there's a portable Atari VCS? And that it includes a version of arcade Frogger, and you can load the ROM of old Atari VCS Frogger from Parker Brothers onto an SD card?

I had no idea there was a portable VCS!!...and it's a decent price too. There's this year's 'Easter Egg' sorted out...that's if I can actually wait a few more weeks;-)

Thanks for all of these suggestions, guys! I was going to try some of the modern (and, I suspect, disastrous) 'reimaginings' of Frogger at the weekend, but I think  I'lll have a much better time with these games!

I had Frogger running on MAME4Droid, Cynicaster. I run MAME4Droid on the Nvidia Shield TV, which is an emulation powerhouse! I'm determinded to get a real cabinet one day, though;-)
