#3954849 computer users groups: then and now....?

Posted by blakespot on Tue Feb 6, 2018 1:15 PM

I belonged to P.A.C.E., the Peninsula Atari Computer Enthusiasts covering the Virginia peninsula (south east Virginia) in 1986-88 or so. One of the places we would meet at night was this Lutheran school in Hampton, VA. I just got in contact with someone there who was able to provide me with photos of the Atari 8-bit lab we would do our meetings in from that period. I am going to write it up on my blog, soon.

I talk a little about that group and others in my blog post from a few years ago.

#3944692 SIO2SD oddity - A8 program loader

Posted by blakespot on Thu Jan 25, 2018 5:04 PM

I emailed Lotharek to day asking about this, sending the video and description and he said the solution is simple: "remove old capacitors from READ/WRITE SIO lines."

He said remove and not replace. Lost in translation? I assume I need to replace them. Anyone have a good source for new caps? Thanks.

He also sent this: (attached)

#3922348 800XL s-video cable to Sony PVM - did I blow the CRT?

Posted by blakespot on Fri Dec 29, 2017 10:10 AM

I've spent too much time solder repairing in the past few months (dead iMac screen -- damned SMT microscopic pads, TI-99/4A keyboard cable disintegration, etc.) so I went and eBay'd a decent looking 130XE with "the box" PSU ( top right ) along with a second (separate auction) "the box" PSU for the incoming 800XL PAL that's on order. I've got my 15yo SIO2PC cable going on an old P3 with APE and an SIO2SD arriving any day. So I want to keep rolling while I have some time off (laid off 3 months ago, but new job starting in a week or two). I will work at fixing the dead 130XE at some point soon and decide where to go from there.

Thanks folks.

(And if anyone has heard to the contrary, that "the box" is also a death brick, please do whisper it in my ear.)

#3918206 Want to setup a PAL system in the states

Bah gave up on my Win 10 machine. Repurposed a Haiku-running P3 and got it done with XP. :-)

you can get the drivers on the atarimax website... the demo prolly does not install by default.. take a look around and you should find a thread and the appropriate drivers there, and some discussions about it... also as a side note although I think the firmware and drivers will only work on registered versions...

Bah. Maybe so. I purchased SIO2PC cable and APE something like 15 years ago and still have the cable (serial) -- but I see APE is $100. Not going to re-pay that with the SIO2SD en route from Europe, but it would've been nice to play with some games on this NTSC unit while I wait. Is there any other program that can use an SIO2PC cable to run anything, even if crudely?

Also -- is it definitely the case that if I were to pay the $100, signed drivers that will run under Windows 10 Pro 64 exist? (I would need to install the Keyspan USB to serial adapter I have and drivers to interface to APE with this serial SIO2PC cable.)

Also --- other suggestions for PAL Atari 8-bits (more than just the board)?

#3818209 Getting BASIC prog in a remote textfile running on a TI?

Posted by blakespot on Tue Aug 1, 2017 9:18 AM

Thanks for the help, folks! I got the program running on real metal and made my entry to the r/Retrobattlestations BASIC Month competition. I took a video, linked in my Reddit submission:

#3817732 Getting BASIC prog in a remote textfile running on a TI?

Posted by blakespot on Mon Jul 31, 2017 3:11 PM

So, I finished getting the BASIC program entered in a text editor and I got Classic99 running on Windows. I pasted the text in (pasted fine) and it runs in emulator. I saved it out to a DSK device and a file appears in the DSK directory. Can I send that file to the TI via serial using TIMXT and save it to a physical floppy on the TI and run it in XB? Or will that not work with that file C99 created?

Speaking of Turbo Pascal, here's perhaps a rarity:

I bought this in 1987 to use not with a Macintosh but with my Atari 520ST fitted with the Magic Sac cartridge, part of a Macintosh emulator by David Small that worked amazingly well.

I guess that's just serial port 2?
