Many people just don't understand that this is just typical gaming banter, and really its a non issue.
It isn't.  It's typical 12 - 18 year old game "banter" on Live maybe.  I know I have yet to hear it playing TF2 for many hours on PC.  Not a once.

And even if it were, it is also typical "athelete banter" to curse and swear.  However, when you hold a press conference announcing you signed a new player, you hope he doesn' come out and say "what's up mutha fuckers!  Suck my di**, I just got paid bitches!"  If something is "typical banter" among the lowest common denomenator of your customer base, it doesn't mean you parade it on stage during your multimillion dollar, worldwide press conference.

Oh wow, a rape joke while playing a game, who hasn't ever done that when kicking someone's ass in a game. Better go cry a river.

A rape joke and actual rape are not the same things, but people are acting like they are, my God why don't people ever grow up.
Okay:

1) I don't get offended by this type of thing, and usually think it's overblown.

2) It's a dumb thing to say when you are debuting your big name title at a horribly expensive event where you are trying to make a good impression on people who are already mad at you.

3) I have never made a rape joke while playing games.  I am kind of sad that you think most people do.  I mean, my wife was raised by a fisherman and fisherwoman, so she uses cu**ish to describe someone's bad behaviour, and f*** as a filler word for pretty much half of everything she says.  She's the only person I ever met who swears and says inappropriate things more than me.  And even me and her don't make rape jokes when we play games.   Why would you?  They wouldn't be funny.  The one the guy made here certainly wasn't.  Is the bar really this low?  Okay, I'll make one to try it out "man that Tom Nook.  I sure hope someone rapes him in the racoon ass.  That'll teach him to overcharge me for a lamp."  Ah yes.  The height of comedy.

4) The funnier bit is that the girl in that demo had so little fun, and said so.  "No I don't like this" is hardly the tagline you should be debuting for your new game and console that you are paying millions of dollars to debut.

Technically, though, only one user is consuming the server resources at any given time. It isn't costing EA anything extra. For all their electricity knows, only one person is playing that one copy.
And because I paid to download the map pack DLC, which is the excuse they used for developing DLC in the first place.  And I wouldn't have bought the DLC for that game without getting the deal of buying the disk used.  The very disk someone was paid money for that they then put into buying anohter new game that they also bought DLC for.  We are well past the days of the disk being the only thing they monetize after all.

The linked article is merely a fraction of the whole situation.Probably close to 95% of games are not big budget games or AAA games and occasionally you'll get a blockbuster out of that 95%. Games like Halo or Gears that are big budget and that take a few years between releases are great games and will bring back great profits. Statistically, low budget games will fail to bring in profits more than AAA titles. I am gathering he chose Cliffy B and his thoughts to try to use as an example of what is wrong with video game production because it's easy to pick apart if you limit your scope. If he were to use Mirrors Edge as an example, his rants would be spot on. Problem is, ME was an exception to the big budget rule.

Expenses for you and me in every walk of life are increasing, so why does this dude think the game industry doesn't see those same increases? With online elements becoming normal and advertising and marketing costs continually rising, it makes sense that budgets are at an all time high. If his solution of tighter budgeting worked so very well, the wii wouldn't have been the gaming toilet for games. His examples like COD work well within his thoughts as would Madden. Nothing more than some roster updates and some new maps. Proven titles that don't need lots of marketing or major structure changes. Then again, what is the used value on those games as soon as the newest edition is released? How valuable is online play for Madden 2012 when 2013 comes out? I think he could have done better than using games that totally devalue in just 1 year when trying to put someone in their place about used game sales.

Sorry Starscream, but it's hard to resist the fact that he has a video out recently with this title:

S.S. Microsoft is already pretty empty, and I think Sony has started to send additional boats.
