  1. This is a great idea! I want to make a pocket PC/tabletop too! I've got an old HP iPAQ 2210 currently collecting dust that I could use for such a project. Last time I used it, it played beautifully all sorts of emulators (mameCE, atari, NES, etc.). I'd like to find a nice but not too expensive table top and find a way to get the iPAQ inside. However, the iPAQ controls would need to be hooked to "arcade style" controls. I've got an old gravis pad with a small stick that can be screwed in the middle of the d-pad. Perfect for a mini joystick! Does anyone know if I can simply solder the connectors of the iPaq d-pad directly to the gravis d-pad switches ? (same process for the buttons). Or would it be more complex than that? Thanks
  2. In case anyone's interested, I tried a few more emulators on my WM5 Pocket PC (Acer n311) and some of them worked! 2600: Pocket VCS 1.0 actually works ! There are a few glitches but I found a way to make it work. When I click on "Load Cartridge", nothing happens but then when I click on "return to game", the "open file" window opens and after a few tries, the game finally starts. I had to set the frameskip setting to "2" otherwise it's too slow. I don't know if it's because of the 400 mhz Samsung processor or the VGA screen that all emulators are slow on my PPC but anyway, the frameskip is hardly noticeable. Game Boy BW & Color: PocketGnuboy 1.0.3 works fine NES: NesterJ4u 1.13 works fine
  3. Well, I got my new Acer N311 yesterday and I tried quickly to run a few emulators. The results are not encouraging. Let's recap the specs: Windows Mobile 5.0 (WM5), VGA screen (640x480), Samsung 400mhz processor MegaMameCE: works in full screen but slow (90% frame rate). Tested only with Time Pilot and Q*Bert Pocket SNES 1.12.200 and Pocket SNES 1.12.201: don't work. Frozen in pause mode Pocket VCS 1.0: menus work but doesn't load ROMs SCUMMVM: works. Need to set screen resolution to x2 Stella for Pocket PC and Smartphones: works in full screen but extremely slow. Does any one know if is it due to the current state of this port or to my hardware specs? I read somewhere that the Samsung 400Mhz was the equvalent of a Intel XScale 520 Mhz. Maybe that's not true. Or maybe the VGA resolution eats too much power PocketGnuBoy 1.20, not tested Well, well. I'm disappointed to say the least. The Acer N311 is a beautiful PPC, very small, very light, with built-in wifi, beautiful screen. But if I can't run my favorite emulators, it will loose some of its appeal. If anyone has suggestions, I would be happy to hear them. Thanks !
  4. Hi there, Does anyone else have any experience using emulators on Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PCs? There must be more than 1 person who tried. I'll try Stella for Windows Mobile when I get my new Acer n311, but since I also currently use MegaMameCE and various Nintendo emulators on my WM2003 PPC, I'd really appreciate any feedback that users of WM5 PPCs could provide. Many thanks in advance!
  5. Hi there, I live in France and I have 2 4-switch 2600s: a black Secam version which can play all my PAL and NTSC games (but with the wrong colors) and a Woodgrain NTSC which obviously I can't connect to my TV as it only accepts NTSC through the composite or SVideo inputs. I was thinking of buying the 8bitdomain mod chip for my NTSC woody because I really want to play my 80+ NTSC games in their original color. (If you ever played an NTSC version of River Raid on a Secam 2600, you can understand : the colors are really ugly) I did a bit of search in the forum and the story told by omne is making me wonder if this modification would work for me. However, I have no problem using on my TV the NTSC Jakks Namco unit I bought in the US, so I think I'm going to try anyway. Re: the problem described by omne, he's saying that the owner in France confirmed NTSC playback with NTSC DVD's. He didn't say if the DVDs were read in an NTSC player (brought from the US) or a multizone PAL player (bought in Europe). The fact that an NTSC DVD can be played in a multizone PAL player doesn't indicate that the TV can indeed accept NTSC signal (because I think that the multizone PAL player would convert the DVD into PAL signal) Anyway, if anyone can shed more light on this topic before I order my chip from 8bitdomain, I would really appreciate it. Many thanks in advance.
  6. Thanks Moderntimes99. What emulators do you run on your WM5 Axim (if any)?
  7. The site is up and running again. Go to http://www.abandonware-magazines.org/affiche_mag.php?mag=28 to get to the scans of Tilt Magazine, the French translation of Electronic Games. Enjoy
  8. I went to the show on Sunday afternoon, right after my plane landed from Paris. It was great! In Europe, we don't get Classic Video Games shows, so to be able to see all these vintage systems and cartridges was just wonderful! I bought 30+ cartridges, manuals, controllers, etc. (I almost need a new suitcase to go back home ) Thanks for the show. I had a great time.
  9. Sorry if the topic has already been discussed. I did a search but couldn't find an answer. I'm currently using a Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC (iPaq 2210) and I can use all sorts of emulators on it: MegaMameCE3 9.5, Pocket SNES 1.12.200, PocketGnuBoy 1.20, Pocket VCS 1.0, etc. I'm thinking about buying the new Acer n311 that has a VGA screen and runs Windows Mobile 5. Does anyone know if these emulators will work on this hardware? I don't know how different WM5 is from WM2003 but since MegaMameCE3 has not been updated in a long time, I'm afraid that there will be compatibility problems. I'm wondering also if it is possible to "stretch" the 240x320 resolution of most emulators to VGA. Many thanks in advance for your help!
  10. Yes, it seems that they are currently doing some heavy maintenance work. I read the related threads in their forum and they're saying that they hope to reopen the site this week-end. I sure hope they do, because they had so many scans of magazines from the 80's! This was a gold mine! If anyone is interested, if have a few issues of Tilt (the French translation of Electronic Games) on my hard drive. They're large files, though: 30 to 60 MB I have issues 1 (September 1982), 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 100, 122 (last issue - January 1994)
  11. I live in Paris and I work for a big software company based in Redmond, WA (guess which one? ) I happen to have a meeting there on Monday Feb 27th. What a great coincidence! I'm planning to arrive a day early to go to the NWCGE (my first classic videogame show! I'm really excited) Do I need to pre-register? Thanks
  12. If you read French, you can go to this site: http://www.abandonware-magazines.org/index.php They have scans of the wonderful French "Tilt" magazine from the first issue in September 1982 to the last one in January 1994. Tilt magazine covered consoles (Atari 2600, Coleco, Vectrex, Videopac, etc.), computers (Spectrum, C64, Apple 2, etc.), games, handhelds, etc. If you read French, it is full of great information. Tilt was THE video game magazine in France at the time. The first issues seem to be based on translations of the US "Electronic Games" magazine (I've never read this magazine, but I'd be interested to do so, to see the similarities). Over time, the publisher developped more "local" content.
