#3983408 New Atari Console that Ataribox?

Posted by JDTAY on Mon Mar 12, 2018 5:33 AM

Meh, I still want an Ataribox, even with the shady cryptocurrency. I mean, as long as it has open Linux, which the website still claims it does. A decent Linux console is largely in my area of interest.

I'm gonna make the best worst games ever for it. Including the just conceived Retro Brand Company Simulator. Pimp out your brand at casinos to get funding for real projects that you'll never be capable of finishing. Also, make delicious tacos. Fun for the whole family!

Man, I feel like I've missed a lot of thread. When did tacos get dragged into this? All they've ever aspired to do is fill the bellies of hungry Mexicans; I hate to see them insulted like this.

Well, I feel like someone is obligated to offer a counterpoint here, so I'll take the highly irrational side.

Mother****in' sellouts! May they choke on farts! *RAGE*

OK, I'll bite. What paradigm is exactly being shifted here? This is limited as both a streaming box and game machine, each of which we have either separate or in combination with far more content already than this will ever have, and at most times at a cheaper price and likely with far more power. And it remains to be seen how useful this will be as a computer.

Um, running open Linux, if true, means this thing will *launch* with "far more content" than any proprietary consoles or streaming boxes "will ever have". >_>

Basically, this isn't meant to be a computer, it's actually the world's first major non-proprietary console.

Just noticed that I've been getting a little moody. Sorry about that. It's just that the Ataribox reveal turned out to be the best case scenario for me, yet everyone's still down on it for some reason.

BTW, I've been following the saga of something called the Dragonbox Pyra for years now, a.k.a. one man's quest to put "somebody else's computer hardware running open source OS inside a plastic box with a name on it", and it's a bit harder than you may think.

But at the end of the day, what's being created? Somebody else's computer hardware running open source OS inside a plastic box with a name on it. At best the "developer" put his name on it, big whoop. That's what these clowns don't get. Any idiot can make a project box and slap somebody else's hardware inside and stick a logo on it. That does not a successful product make.

If anyone can do it, why hasn't anyone else done it yet? This isn't a Raspberry Pi. It's custom modern AMD hardware. And the whole point of using an open source OS is that users will be able to do what they want. I thought the only reason people kept preferring locked down consoles to computers was price, but if this forum is anything to go by, maybe people are actually afraid of freedom.

Honestly, they should have used SteamOS and make it a full blown Steam Machine instead of some unknown AtariOS...

Errm... Why would you want to limit what the OS can do? They said their version of Linux will be open to the user to run what they want on it, including both Steam and the things SteamOS doesn't run. Sounds way better than SteamOS to me.

That was my initial call too when it was announced. SteamOS is Linux-based but I don't know if it allows other third-party gateways or stores. I'm not sure if that's what Atari meant ... that it'll just run things downloaded from Steam or if it also allows downloads from other platforms.

The email and article both state that it's not running SteamOS, but their own version of Linux, that while designed to be user friendly, is still completely customizable by the user and runs anything a PC with the same amount of power and Linux would. They said their whole inspiration for this was seeing people plugging their PCs into their TVs for gaming. Thus they wanted to bring a truly open gaming experience like that of PC's into a form factor made for the living room. Presumably it runs any Linux compatible games that its hardware has the power for from any provider, be it Steam, GOG, itch.io, even freeware.

Yeah, but unlike Retro, Coleco, and Atari, I'm not promising something and delivering nothing, I'm promising nothing and delivering nothing.

Let it be known that JDTAY delivers.

Just do fantasy console software that runs on PC like PICO-8, but with a dedicated web store like Steam for its games and free development tools.

No hardware prototype needed. Just put it on Kickstarter and go. Awwww yeah.

In fact, I could practically do this myself. Any of you coding types wanna go in with me on this? You handle all the work, and I'll handle the marketing. ;)

Hmmm, authorization to make products compatible with Sony and Microsoft's consoles...

So I get to hear Uncharted through my Speakerhat? Awwww yeah.

Honestly, they should have gone with a legionnaire's hat for the speakerhat. You could actually put the speakers by the ears, and there's bonus eighties nostalgia.
