#4258411 Black screen, no beep with boyfriend's TI

Looks like ours, despite the attempts, is down for the count *sighs* Sorry to everyone who contributed, we wish we had better news on this. We do have some offers to get a working one, and to get this one off our hands for repair practice, so... I guess that's our contribution?

Dude, why try to poke the hornet's nest? These guys have been the most generous and chill community I've ever seen. Don't try to provoke them with this entitlement BS...

I for one am impressed with how much work and interaction with the community you have done so far to resolve the issue.  I hope you have had some fun in learning and working with it.  Please do not get discouraged.

It's been an adventure, I'll say that. We never expected this kind of help from the TI community, at all; we thought we'd get a little bit of advice, if that, and a whole lot of pointing to Ebay auctions for parts. The fact that we got so much more is why we're dedicated to getting this thing up and running; to make sure all of your help doesn't go to waste.

That's precisely what we're going to do. It's been delayed, but we hope it'll get here by tomorrow.

Okay, that's what we did, taking out each of the suggested socketed chips one-by one, turning the machine on, then replacing the chip before doing the same to the next chip, to make sure we singled out each of the chips. None of the chips we were suggested to test, this way (the sound chip and the two GROM chips) changed the black screen we were getting, so it looks like we need to get a replacement motherboard.

I don't need anything for it. My wife will be happy because one of the 70 or so spare consoles I have in the house will be gone to a good home. . .she's trying to reclaim some of my hobby space for her own nefarious purposes.  ;)

Okay... If you say so. I'll PM you with our address. Thanks for the offer, btw. I really wish we could repay everyone who helped us get the parts to repair this thing; we are now dedicated to getting it working, come hell or high water, to make sure your generosity isn't wasted.

EDIT: Seems like you can't accept any new PMs. Thanks again for the offer. We're not sure what you mean by "bare board"; my boyfriend's dad has a soldering iron, but he doesn't really have the time or other equipment needed for soldering chips into a board. If it's ready to go, and just need a new VCD chip in it, we have that we can use. Our address is:

This is literally making me cry. Now we feel like we have to get this computer working, if only to justify all of the effort you guys put in to help us out.

According to the article Flottmann1 linked, it looks like there's a possibility I'd need to replace one of the ROM chips, as well as the Video chip. I hope that's not the case; if it is, then we're likely going to take up RickyDean's offer for a replacement board, but we want to try just getting the video chip switched out and see if that has a difference.

I only came on here, initially, to get help with an unknown issue with my boyfriend's old TI. I never, ever expected the kind of generosity and graciousness I'd find here. People like FarmerPotato, FDOS and Ricky Dean have made us feel very welcome into the community, with their offers of help, and sometimes it does feel like we're taking advantage of that generosity, but we appreciate it, nonetheless. We're now committed to getting this TI working, for you guys, so all your hard work and sacrifices to help us won't be in vain. From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you.

Hey Xabin, I can do a swap, a good board for a bad, for 10.00 + shipping, will guarantee that it will work with your new PS, if the PS is good and will fit into the black and silver case. Let me know if this is acceptable. I can either repair the bad board or use it for parts, have a box full, that need to be fixed. PM me if interested.

That doesn't sound bad. We'll discuss it, and let you know in a day or two. Thanks.

Definitely looking at the VDP at this point, but I also though that I would mention that Omega was very conservative in his estimate on the number of consoles some of us have. . .as I think I may have waaaay more than that, something like 50 of them. . .and that may be a serious underestimate. I may have a few spare 9918A chips lurking about that I received from one of the former TI managers a few years ago. Let me make some checks.

Okay, thanks. If you find any that work, let us know, and we can negotiate a price for them. One more question: since we don't want to haul around an old CRT, we're wondering if we can use our flatscreen for the computer's display; it's an older style Vizio with composite and cable/antenna plugins as well as the standard HDMI and whatnot.

Well, I'm certainly now envious of my boyfriend for having it as a kid; I had an Atari 2500, and comparing games shared between the two, and knowing my love for video games back in the day, I wish I could've had a TI, instead.

Wow, that is highly technically impressive. I was already sorta impressed by the game quality of the TI compared to what I remember of my old Atari 2600 (comparing similar games between them), but this is fantastic. How did you manage to get all that data crammed into it without much loss of quality?

All of this support, the offers for help and free parts to help get our TI back into working gear... it makes us sad that we can't repay you guys for it.

Wow. I wasn't expecting that. I was honestly just asking if people knew about it. He thought it was too obscure a game for people to recognize, despite him loving it, so... yeah, thanks, regardless.
