  1. Many old netbooks from 12-15 years ago can now do the same as the above computer, and while using only MS-DOS. If the above type of computer interests you, you may already have such a computer. SBEMU adds the missing sound portion. (This AliExpress computer is quite neat looking tho!) https://github.com/crazii/SBEMU "Emulate Sound Blaster and OPL3 in pure DOS using modern PCI-based (onboard and add-in card) sound cards." I have a USB stick set aside to test newer machines for SBEMU compatibility. Good luck!
  2. I misinterpreted your sentence, sorry. Yeah, I've always understood that Space Invaders vaulted the 2600 into big success.
  3. The little [1] in the quote notes the reference, which was By the looks (there is a paywall; I could not see the full article), the Washington Post article is noting rough estimate of the sales of the 5200 upon the discontinuation announcement. Discontinuation totals would be roughly lifetime sales, especially given they say "reportedly", not any exact figure. I am guessing that as of May '85, the 2600 sold 12-15 million? I honestly don't know. In May '84. the Atari 2600 was closer to the end of its seventh year of sales.
  4. My understanding was the 7800 was a lower cost system to make. The 5200 was a comparatively expensive machine to make, so that would help profitability. There was supposed to be a 5200 to 7800 adapter for 5200 owners. That would have been a good gesture to 5200 buyers. from Wikipedia: "On May 21, 1984, during a press conference at which the Atari 7800 was introduced, company executives revealed that the 5200 had been discontinued after less than two years on the market.[5] Total sales of the 5200 were reportedly in excess of 1 million units,[1] far short of its predecessor's sales of over 30 million. " That was well in advance of the 1985 XE announcement, and years before the XEGS (specifically games targeted marketing system). The 5200 was obsoleted (discontinued) by it's own financial viability, not the XE's or 7800. The newer introductions were supposed to be solutions.
  5. Myself, I don't like the logic of that. I certainly won't buy any product I don't want; especially with a vague, self interpreted hope that something I do want will eventually come out. I strongly expect market research is done, weighed against the product costs, and a decision is made for each new product. As a real world example, Nintendo did not stop making consoles after the poor selling selling Wii U. They knew there was the potential for sales. I expect other companies look forward, not back at mistakes, as the way to go. I hope I am not coming across as rude for strongly disagreeing with that line of thought. Have a nice weekend!
  6. Yeah, I wasn't focusing on the hardware differences, and should have spelt that out better, sorry. In both cases, and Sega's example is more extreme, you had a variety of "one company's" platforms on which software could be bought for concurrently. I see the "cereal marketing" analogy possibly being a reason for attempting this. (I bought all of the Sega consoles, so "ha ha!" on me. 😆)
  7. I always thought that they were applying "cereal marketing" to the video game industry. With cereal, the practice was to have as many options as possible to get market share. It didn't work, but looks like Sega repeated the practice unsuccessfully in the early/mid 90's with Game Gear, Master System, Genesis, Sega CD. 32X, Saturn, Pico.
  8. I am in the same position now. My sd card slot stopped recognizing cards, so I am trying to open the console. I have the two screws out of the bottom, and it partially opens. Am thinking there are more screws underneath the two rubber rests, but am hoping someone knows for sure. Thanks in advance.
  9. If it could run Win 3.1 under DOSBOX, I would be pleased.
  10. Thanks for your efforts, sir. 🙂
  11. My understanding is USB 2.0 are the red colored ports, and USB 3.0 are the blue colored ports. I think the black colored ports are likely USB 2.0, unless your computer is really old; before the red/blue coloring started. Could be wrong tho...
  12. I am wondering if the tabletops are "Atari 50" only, in terms of the software that can be ran on them. I hope it can run everything that can run on a GSP...
