#4066801 Which Homebrew carts do you own?

Posted by Necron99 on Mon Jul 9, 2018 6:35 PM

I really loved Endless Snow. Pity the developer left as he couldn't get his Pigs in the Castle game in order.

In case you didn't know, there's a hidden Easter Egg in the game:

ICYDK. Pigs in the Castle and Checked Inn were both released via his website.

#3926219 Atarimania like homebrew archive?

Posted by Necron99 on Wed Jan 3, 2018 9:12 AM

The problem with homebrews is, that there are just too many and also too many unfinished or even barely started. When compiling such a list, you are hunting an ever moving target. Many people have tried such an index, but most gave up soon.

Here is the most recent index (from AA member arenafoot) I know about:

Also, adding new games, multiple distributions, Limited-Special-and Alternate editions, and out of print stuff. there is a lot of variables when making anything.

Afaik there is some effort on putting up an AtariAge Wiki, which would be rather fitting for "collecting" homebrews.

I haven't heard of that, but I'd love to help if it's true.

Maybe such a list should be limited to games which were/are released by the author on physical carts. Either unlimited only or at least e.g. 50 carts.

That would avoid all unfinished games plus those which are especially tailored to milk collectors.

atari2600homebrew and videogamehomebrew both do that, however, the threshold is merely 5 copies produced. maybe a separate list for those under 50 as I think some that are under that are decent games and need more interest to have more produced.

IMO a wiki would be most likely most effective and lasting. I am sure Al would host it, but someone else has to set it up.

It is. I've tried pretty much every other option. this is a job for a group of people

First we should decide what kind of Wiki we want. Should it be Atari 2600 only? Atari only? Classic homebrews? All homebrews? Only released ones? What are the requirements for a valid release? Are hacks allowed? Etc pp.

I suggest we begin with all atari consoles and expand from there. we could do both cartridge releases and rom releases with the right layout. I suggest hacks being allowed but in a separate category...at videogamehomebrew and atari2600homebrew, I broke categories into Homebrew, Hack, Reproduction, and Demo & Non-Games. the lists of rom releases would be a rather large extensive list.

Like Thomas said, you have to make boundaries, otherwise you'll drown, trust me.

IMO archiving all post 1992 cart released VCS homebrews is already more than enough work.

yup, i nearly drowned in this a few times. which is why I think it's better as a wiki, collectively we can gather info at a faster rate without drowning.

I've tried several different ways to document homebrew lists and its a frustrating process.

sorting homebrew, hacks, repros and demos can sometimes be a grey area. Info on the net is often lost or contradictory to other sources.

A wiki is IMO, the best bet for community support. If Al wanted to add a wiki on AA, then I'd be down to add as much info as possible.

I only own 3. Pac man 4K, Halo 2600, and Melbourne Tatty. Looking online to see if I could get others like Bioshock 2600 and Mega Man 2600, but it's impossible to find any homebrew games for sale outside of the Atari Age Store.

I don't think there is a Bioshock 2600 besides mock up images. Mega Man 2600 is only a demo.

AtAriAge should be your first stop when looking for homebrew games to buy. The largest and best selection out there and the quality is top notch.
Packrat Video Games
Packrat has a decent selection of hacks and homebrews to buy, some are titles you can already find in the AtariAge store.
Hozer Video Games
Hozer has a pretty negative reputation with the 2600 community, because of the legitimacy of how the business is ran. from unauthorized homebrews and not paying royalties to the horrid labels he makes, I can't recommend ordering or supporting this business model. also avoid his eBay listings as some are also sold elsewhere.
Not adding the link, you can use google if want to hurt the hobby.
Good Deal Games
GDG has lots of homebrews for many systems, some 2600 ones are exclusives, though they are made by Hozer. several other homebrews from AtariAge are there and sometimes there's some limited editions there.
Lost Classics
This listing could also fall under the individual games listed below as "Road Warriors" is the only game available to buy. it is a store though so games may be added at a later date.
Individual Games
Defend Your Castle
DYC comes with a PCB and a label, you supply the cart casing. nice idea to get rid of a spare super common game.
Checked Inn & Pigs in the Castle
Checked Inn and Pigs in the Castle are sold as a bundle

Don't know...I really really want to back this project, but with only 15 days to go and only about half of their goal met...I'm not sure?

I don't understand this logic. If you back the project and it doesn't raise enough funds, you don't get charged anything. There's no need to be worried about backing a project you are interested in, no matter how close to the goal it is.

There's only 5 days left now and it's 75% funded.

Holy cow. What are some of your favorites? Any you regret getting?

favorites? off the top of my head... Muncher, Halo 2600, AVCS Tec Challenge, AStar, Toyshop Trouble, Vault Assault. I'm likely forgetting a few. also, I still have a few I haven't played yet as my game room has been under construction.

regrets? hmmm. I bought a few hacks from Hozer once, I think Doomzerk and Berzerk Renegade were a couple of them...I kinda feel like the labels are pretty badly made and even though the games play and are fine, it makes then feel cheap. The Last Ninja isn't a very good game but I didn't pay much for it.
