Avoid The Ground

One day Blinky finds himself at the bottom of a dark dungeon and there's only one way out... up!

Blinky Goes Up is an original platform game for the Atari 2600 by Jan Hermanns. Your goal is to ascend through each level in this vertical scrolling platformer, collecting every gold nugget along the way. You'll receive an extra life for every four told nuggets you collect. And you may need them, as there are villains working to block your path: Tooby, Bolly, and Shooty. To compound matters, if you fall or jump from a platform and don't land on another, you'll lose a life!

There are two techniques you can use to increase the odds of your escape! The faster you run, the longer your jumps. And second, there are packages where you need to perform an airwalk: just run over the edge of any platform and press fire while Blinky is falling--he'll perform a jump then!

Good luck!

A precision platformer for the 2600! I am a massive fan of Super Meat Boy. This game is not that hard, but it reminds me of a 2600 version of that game. It has that one more try game design element down to a science. This has remained one of the homebrews I go back to often, and its been around for a few years now. Ferg did a great interview with Jan Hermanns on the Atari 2600 game by game podcast. You should go give it a listen. A solid game that could really use a sequel, hint hint

What a great little platformer this is! Simple effective graphics and great animation on the main character give this game a pleasing look. Controls are responsive and each level progresses the challenge further by just the right amount.

If there is anything I would have added to extend replay value, it would have been a timer so you could try and finish each level faster.

Overall, I recommend this game to anyone who wants a challenge and does not mind a little bit of trial and error.

A very solid 4 out of 5!

This is one amazing game. It is a smooth, fluid, side scroller, something I never thought was possible. Well, never at this level. It is one of those games that really needs to be played. This game succeeds at being very fun, challenging, and showcasing what the VCS can do. I really hope this becomes a series, new levels and challenges, I just don't want this adventure to end. Pick this one up, you really need to see/play this gem!

Blinky Goes Up is a 2600 game in its truest "original" form, which is only 4k in size. But this game delivers amazing gameplay along with its fantastic graphics and sounds. Jan Hermanns really pushed the original program size to its limits. Well-animated sprites with smooth animation make this game as much a joy to watch as the challenging level design make it fun to play. I only wish there were more than 6 levels, or perhaps increasing difficulty on the available levels, to give the game more replayability. (Though I understand that would go beyond the restraints of 4k) Hopefully, the success of this homebrew will inspire Mr. Hermanns to make use of the availability of larger program carts to put out another Blinky game with more levels and challenges. I love this game!

This is a very, very smooth and polished platformer. The graphics are great and the challenge is there, for sure. This one definitely has the "one more time" factor! Highly recommended. Haven't been this entranced by a 2600 platform game since Hunchy II, which is dope also.
