I disagree with this one and unfair. Because you hate a game, you remove earned points from Odyssey.

 

I believe you try to say that Odyssey is a bad system.

I agree, I am very unfair.

 

I'll be the first to admit these "reviews" are extremely subjective and based on fairly short sessions with the system. Taking away points is a silly thing to do and is meant more to be humorous.

 

Since I did invite voting for the system in the comments and since you are the first to voice an opinion then I will restore the points.

 

Oh, and I actually LIKE the Odyssey! Honest! You will see.

Damn, just 5 years too late for my vote to count. I would have LOVED to have seen negative points awarded to game systems for bad games, as it really gives you a better idea of just how precious a gift good design was in that wild primordial swamp.

 

But it's okay...

 

This entire series is a treasure. Stories of fighting absurd limits with incredible imagination are why I got into gaming in the first place, and your reviews are as much example of that as the games themselves...this is bringing me back to the love I once had for the medium.

WOW, thank -you-! You just made my entire month, possibly my entire summer. I've been going through my entries today, trying to get them archived and into a form that has links and pictures that actually work again. Thank you for your words of encouragement. I'm trying to get my act together enough so that I can at least finish 1980 before deciding what to do. (move onwards into just consoles or start to play computer games that I've "always wanted to play".). Thanks again.

About this game, I agree. The Odyssey was a poor randomizing device. In fact, whenever the system is relegated to an accessory role, the games tend to feel like they would be much more fun without the Odyssey, which is a shame. Perhaps they tried to fit too many different games (and genres!) in this limited system. Sometimes less is more.

Hah, yes, I'm a glutton for praise but I've learned through this that I'd make a terrible reviewer! I'm much too subjective and my opinion of a game can change with my mood or the amount of caffeine and sugar I've had that day. But yes, absolutely, I do my best to express myself as genuinely as I can in this thing, it's important that my enthusiasm shine through even if it puts me in a rather geeky light. xD

 

The story goes that the inventor wanted to sell the game for about $20 and just include Tennis and a couple of other games. The folks who were marketing/selling it said they needed to make more money per unit, because people wanted to feel like they were making a substantial purchase. It's been said that yes, they overdid it. Also remember $100 in 1972 was like $400 in 2005 (I don't know what it would be now) this system was expensive, but it was doing something nothing else ever had.
