Old Versus New

For a long time I’ve wondered why one of the greatest classics was never remade, when even lesser titles were getting reiterations. Paperboy it seemed, to me at least, was overdue a revival, it would benefit well from a full 3D environment. It wasn’t until I read Steven Pool’s ‘Trigger Happy: The Inner Life of Videogames’ for a second time that I realised that a remake would face so many problems.Paperboy played on a simple fixed isometric viewpoint and you only had one direction of travel, forw

overworked

Nothing is worse than being on salaried pay and having to work an extra day a week for the past 2 weeks. Just last week, everyone else in the office was 'sick', who knows if it was legit or not.. but I was to distribute 12,000 flyers on a citywide home repair project. Dividing those between 8 people wouldnt be too bad, but it was just me. Talk about a waste of freakin time. I was very tempted to go to the nearest air force base, commandeer a C-130, load the cargo bay with those blasted flyers, c

No Escape! from eBay

I've recently started doing something that I should have started doing some time ago. What is that something you might ask? Well, even if you didn't ask, I'm going to tell you anyway! I've started selling the many duplicate games I have, putting them up for auction on everyone's favorite marketplace, eBay! Anyone who's been to my place knows I have video game hardware and software crammed into every conceivable space. Some of these items I've been moving about the country for many years, and

Exhausted

Damn. I worked 13.5 hours today and I am nearly ready to hit the sack. It was interesting though because whenever we get a lot of overtime, my dept seems to work better together. We do slack off a bit but mostly, we do everything that we can possibly do to stay busy. Had to help one of my co-workers unload a trailer full of trash bags, since our compactor still hasn't arrived. Talk about a group effort. Had a really good talk with my boss this morning and he was telling me about how the system o

Stuff on my mind

Sometimes while I work, I often have many different thoughts that I feel are pretty hard to capture on paper. Lately, I've been thinking about how and when I first got interested in the political process. I know that politics aren't a popular topic nowadays. However, I see things as being serious, that one cannot afford to overlook what is going on with our government nowadays.I first became interested in politics when I read about the WTO protests back in 1999. Before that, I hadn't given much

Socialization 101

I've been pretty concerned about how I'm going to get back into socializing with others. I find myself longing to have a group of close knit friends to hang with and do things with. However, I don't think it's easy to find such a thing anymore. I used to have such a group of folks to hang with. We'd go bowling and to clubs and stuff like that. It was nice but eventually, everyone moved on and did their own little things. It really sucks but I'm confident that I can find such a thing again. Not w

I'm back online

My cable modem kept crapping out and it stopped working yesterday. I called the cable company and after some haggling, managed to get them to set up an appointment for today to fix the problem. The repairman just left and I'm back online. I got a new modem and the repairman replaced a few components that were starting to go. It was kind of awkward NOT to be online but I rented "Napoleon Dynamite" and caught up on some homework while I was offline. At least all my homework is done and ready to su

Lan Di and Apathy

I’m a man at the prime of his life and in the most important juncture of time in human history, yet my concerns are not with the famine, exploitation and starvation of the third world, but of ten year old videogames and iPod batteries. Bizarrely it’s this apathy that has driven me to write. At the moment I’m more concerned about Ryo Hazuki avenging his father’s death then I ever was when I learnt about the awful Boxing Day Tsunami. Yesterday I even contacted Sega of Japan to find out if Shenmue O

Car troubles

My car's been acting really weird lately. I had it looked at on last Friday and the ignition switch was replaced because I thought that was the problem. It turns out that the problem is much worse. While driving to work today, I stopped to get some gas. After filling up, I attempted to start the car and nothing happened. So, I had to call AAA and have them call a flatbed. I had the car towed to a service station 2 and 1/2 miles from where it broke down. It turns out that the car has an oil leak s

The Vinyl Revolution

My turntable found its way to my apartment today. As soon as I got it, I opened it up, assembled it, and spun Black Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell" album. I immediately remembered the differences between analog and digital music. Off of vinyl, the music sounds richer, with more vibrancy and more detail. The drawbacks (the static and pop of the dust) were minimal on this particular record, due to it being almost brand new. Just to see if this was a fluke, I then put on Led Zeppelin III, which has see

DOA: Xtreme Beach Nothingness

Getting bored of Shenmue after spending 50,000 Yen on capsule toys just to get a glimpse of Dremacasko, and only finding Megdra Brother, Sataro and a thousand binsbein 2, I broke my ‘complete one start one’ rule by popping on DOA: Xtreme Beach Volleyball. The game’s development team, rather famously, featured a single man dedicated to ‘breast dynamics’, and I can only assume another man dedicated to ‘game’. In near an hours worth of play I watched fifteen minutes of FMVs, spent half an hour recei

I don't get people sometimes..

One thing I really don't get about people is how sometimes they move on with their lives and leave everyone behind. I have a friend or two who did moved on with their lives and cut off everyone they knew. It may have seemed like a good idea, but it makes me feel like shit sometimes. I mean, I really cared about those friends and when they chose to move on and pretend that I didn't exist, It really ate at me from the inside. Oh well. I guess you can't really do anything about it. All I know is th

The Story of Two Gamers

I know he’ll be in there, how could he not be on a day like this? There is only one door too. I’ll have to walk past him. Same seat almost everyday; he sits there so he can pester people in to chatting with him, as if they liked him. He liked me. If I was lucky he’d be having a piss, or getting a pint. The problem is that he doesn’t get pints or go for pisses; he just sits and pesters people. Bastard. I was almost nervous. It made me feel sick. The cold chill in my fingers gives way to a warm t

Peak time at work

I just learned today that next week, I will be expected to work 12 hour days and possibly work on one of my days off. I'm not really excited about this, but it could mean that I will get a much bigger check. I also heard that we are getting $2 more on top of our hourly wages for all of next week. I'm pumped and primed for what's sure to be another "peak hell". Work is expected to ramp up by the end of this week as more people pour in to help keep the shipping lines going for Mother's Day. I'm pl

The 5 Most Important Videogames of All Time

Like with any screen media, concept recirculation plays a rather heavy part in the videogames industry, yet on the odd occasion a really truly inspired game slips through the net. A single game can force the future of videogames from a stagnant pool of shit to an exciting evolution. Here is my shortlist of the five games that have been the most important and why.5. Space InvadersTaito’s 1977 game was the first to see fully animated sprites, it caused a shortage of the 100 Yen coin used to play i

Heroes

When we were very young my sister thought I could fly. She was convinced of it for almost a year. The whole thing started because we slept in bunk beds. Being older, I had the upper bunk. One night, deep in sleep, I tumbled out of bed. My sister went running into my parents’ bedroom to tell them that I had gone flying past her and was now sleeping on the floor. She was amazed and would not believe that I had fallen, no matter how many times they tried to tell her. For a little while there

The importance of having friends

One thing I've never been able to get about people, is how they just don't consider me approachable at work. I have been a dick in the past with some people and I've tried to make amends by putting on a smile whenever possible and stuff like this. I never thought I'd give a shit about making friends at work, but I realize that it's pretty lonely without any. Also, there are plenty of cool people where I work and I want them to feel comfortable about approaching me. I'm just not sure how to conve

Sandpoint

It’s late and quiet and I’m missing home. I’d like to be walking through the forest right now, with the wind in my face and the moon’s faint glow falling in patches through the trees. The world a layered darkness lit fitfully from above. Pine needles and moss muffling the noise of my footsteps. An owl hooting somewhere in the distance. What a joy it would be to sit alone by the edge of the lake, listening to the wavelets wash against the shore and looking for satellites or falling stars. T

Rainy days

The old adage, "April showers bring May flowers" may just hold true as today has been quite dreary and cold. Rainy days always seem to make me sleepier than usual and very bored too. I already miss the 70 degree weather that we had last Monday. I hope that it comes back for the long run.I didn't feel like doing any of my homework, since all of it is due the first week of May. I don't have much left so I could always wrap it up next weekend and still have enough time to submit it. Not too worried

Where's My Xbox's Soul?

Someone once said: ‘Arguing on the Internet is like the Paralympics - even if you win you’re still retarded’. Harsh, I find, but fair. It’s in the very essence of human nature that a bunch of fanatics communicating in complete anonymity will argue. Argue for the sake of argument, because it is their nature to believe that they alone are possessors of all knowledge. You know who you are.So, perhaps calling the Xbox ‘soulless’ was too poetic for the medium of forum? The pedantic took the topic too

right now i'm pretty worried about a lot of things. like why indeed did i waste so much time and effort in things that noone else sees? because someday, i do indeed have a lot of dreams of flying, of making things happen, that for a very brief season.... did seem to happen. but someday, though, if nothing else, i've left a warning to the future should it ever have to be rebuilt someday...don't let everything get to you indeed. because we're all in this together, whether we like it or not.whether
