So I went to this estate sale...

It was very close to my apartment, just a short trip across the quiet shady street on which I live.   As I mentioned in my previous post, the guy was a total music nut. They used to play fiddle and guitar and all kinds of stuff.   Long story short, I spent a LOT of money. I could have purchased quite a few video games/systems, we are talking in the range of a couple of PS3 systems.   But the thing is, it was all one system and it was all high end and it deserved to stay together. And I

Getting a modded XBox soon!

My coworker mentioned that he had one he wants to get rid of so I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said "ah, you can just have it!"   So I am super-excited. I have never had one before! It looks like I will have to put my trusty Dreamcast out to pasture to make room for it though.   My benefactor could not remember the size of the hard drive or anything like that but he said it's loaded with emulators and ROMs. Sweetness! I might look into getting Media Center software on it, we'l

So I was on a run this morning and... garage sale!

What a freaky-deaky morning I had today! Often on Saturday mornings I go running with my running club. Yes, to answer the immediate question, I am indeed in a running club! If I sat around all day playing games, I would be HUUUGE cause I eat like a madman. So I have to run to balance it, plus I get high on the endorphins.   So this morning we went out on a group fun run to a trail in a relatively wealthy suburban area that is one of my favorite hunting grounds (I once found a pair of $1000 sp

Some good Genesis stuff, ANOTHER Sega CD, 2600 and a cool switcher unit from Craigs

Had a mildly good score today. 22 Genesis games (boxed) console (with Sega CD) and a couple of Sega CD games. TONS of controllers--looks like someone besides me had a thing for cool third-party controller offerings. Also has the awesome video cable. The guy also had a 2600 six-switcher with all the hookups and controllers--the best part is that this one is one of the cool ones with the shiny smooth chromed switches. After the heavy 6, these are my favorite models. Also a couple of random 5200 ga

A Bad Week on eBay

Well, I bought two items and they both had problems. First of all I had this Atari lot shipped to me with no padding at all and two systems were total losses:   http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/160352-just-another-ebay-shipping-rant/page__fromsearch__1   I also bought a power supply for my old PC (which is a Linux box now and my wife actually has the exact same machine as her desktop) and it arrived non-working with three CDs that I didn't ask for. Took me a while to figure it out and t

Awesome Haul

I had an excellent Saturday drive out to the country to meet up with a guy who had a ton of Atari goodies. A friend pointed me to this guy's craigslist ad because he knew the seller (who had earlier tried to sell him the stuff), but when I called earlier this week the seller explained that he had already sold most of the goodies through another ad. Bummer. But then he emailed me later and said he had found a box of books and other Atari stuff and I could have it for $20. Just a couple of grainy

Sega CD Nuttiness

As I mentioned on the thrift finds thread, I bought huge lot of Sega CD goodness. Well, I though it was goodness, but man do these games suck. Especially the movie-based ones. The load times are terrible, the acting is atrocious, and they are just pretty kitschy all around. I guess I can sort of see the charm, but I have been getting bored with these games pretty quick. So far I have played Night Trap, Hook, Batman, and Mad Dog McCree. I guess Mad Dog is maybe better with the gun, but I don't h

Blog Post for to welcome New Forum!

Well, what better excuse for a blog post? Congrats to Al on the new forum software update. It's going to take me a bit of getting used to, but it's growing on me already!   Lately I have been mostly playing Mario Kart Wii, and my Atari has been sad and neglected. Work has been stressful, and there's just something about MK that works as a great stress reliever!   Still need to clean up the game room for some nice pictures.

Two-Block Move 2009: More Room, New TV, Lotsa Crap

Well, my move is complete! It took about 5 days to move the two blocks over and up the hill but it was all worth it! My wife has been looking at craigslist apartment ads for months, after a dispute with the owner of our previous place. He did a crappy job of maintaining the building and our requests for even simple things (replace broken window blinds) were always repeatedly ignored. So a couple of weeks ago she saw an ad for a place in our neighborhood where the listed rent was $300 less than w

My Home Office Smells Like Mold and Stale Smokes

Yes, I bought another huge lot on eBay. The total I paid was over $40.00 and it was a huge mistake. This purchase of mine arrived in a large box with a couple of bubble wrap strips thrown in. While carrying it upstairs to my apartment, I could detect a faint moldy odor. I should have taken it all out to the balcony, but instead made the mistake of opening the box in my home office. The smell hit me the instant I pulled back the first flap--I have bought many disgusting lots from eBay, but this o

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: NO LONGER SHIPPING TO CANADA

I will no longer ship to Canada unless the buyer pays all fees for tracked UPS or USPS international tracking. I have lost two packages in two months at a cost of $18 and I am sick of dealing with the stupid customs forms.   Sorry to all Canadians. It's not you, it's your postal service combined with the horror of the USPS.

Atari 2600 FOR BEER!1

The craigslist ad said:   With a name like that, how could I not call? Bronco said he was busy playing a rock/punk show later on the evening I phoned him, but recommended that I come over with the Tecate the following afternoon. I figured it was a decent deal--the Tecate was probably 20 bucks, add about 5 more for gas, not to mention the adventure at hand!   Well, Bronco apparently got pretty wasted at his show, so he didn't call me back until about 8:00 PM the next day (last night, as it hap

My Crazy Flea Market Day

I started writing this in the "Thrift Finds" thread, but it kinda got out of control--I guess like that THREAD is --but then thought I would just post here and throw a link in that forum.   My friend Randy took me to an incredible flea market today. It was a little bit of a drive, but we made it safe and sound and man what a great sunny day to spend in a parking lot. On the way down I told him about this podcast I'd listened to last night, from Kevin Smith, all about going to a flea market:

I really love AtariAge

I've been going through a rough time lately...got laid off, moved across the country, got married (that's not a rough thing, just...different)_....there's been a lot of change, but this web site has really meant a lot to me. That's all for this blog entry. I am feeling thankful tonight.

My Grandmother passed away

I'm putting this in a blog entry because it really doesn't belong in the main forum, but I wanted to let people know that I was unexpectedly away last week because my grandmother passed away. She wasn't into Atari--playing Scrabble was her thing--but she did teach me to love games and she always had a way of making chores and things like that into a neat adventure. She loved to read and passed that along to me. She was 90 years old and was ill for a long time with MS, but it's still really sad t

Wiiiiiiii!

So through a fairly convoluted series of events, I have a Wii on loan from a friend who wasn't playing it very much. I'd played it over at her house and was very impressed. When we went on a big group ski trip, she brought it along and we had a great time with a large group. Bowling is by far my favorite game, even though I pretty much stink at it. I have a high score of 220 and I'd guess my average is in the 180 range, but after almost every game I feel as though I could have done better.

a good gamestop experience

so i have been playing tringo in second life. i have a weakness for puzzle games and this one has grabbed my attention lately. plus, i like that you can win fake money playing it online. i'm fairly decent at it, but have been meaning to pick the game up in cart form for my gameboy micro. cheap, so i was looking on ebay and yesterday lost an auction for the cart and manual for a total of a little over $10. didn't want to pay more than that. so yesterday i dropped by gamestop and they had tringo,

Atari on the Dreamcast is awesome!

I am posting this just in case there are others out there who might have trouble figuring out how to use Stella DC to play 2600 games on the Dreamcast. Because, trust me, it is totally worth it. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the author has updated the web site in a while, and if you skim over the directions it's not entirely clear how things work (if you are a dummy like me). First, download from http://svolli.de/software/dcstella/Then get your ROMs together. One thing I made sure to do, a

I heart KATAMARI so much that I BROKE IT!

I ordered We (heart) Katamari online, because the Toys R Us near me was sold out, and I got a discounted price on eBay. It took awhile to get here, but finally arrived yesterday. I took it home and was so excited to get the disk out of the casing and into my PS2 that I BROKE the DVD when I tried to remove it. I am not kidding, I really wish I were. One nasty crack, edge to center. No Katamari for me, until I get another copy. I'm out the cash I spent, and I feel really, really dumb. I am over 30

yeah, so how about those nintendo revolution controllers?! i have to say, i think it'll be really cool and groundbreaking. i haven't bought a new nintendo console since the original one, but i think i'm in for a revolution. it just looks so freaking cool. and i am a golf video game freak, and i guarantee one thing, this sucker will have an awesome game that involves swinging the controller like a club. and hockey games where you use it as a stick. this sucker is going to break ALL the rules. i'v

Nostalgia

I went to the Goodwill at lunch today. They don't even stock carts there anymore; i think they sell them all on their web site or at one of their flagship stores. There were 2 Playstations (14.99) and 6 unpriced Sega Genesis consoles. Nothing else, really, just a cute girl digging through some vinyl. It made me think about the good ol' days and my excursions all over the greater Boston area. The triumphs: that time I found a stash of TI-99 carts at Savers and bought the lot for $10. Just this ye
