Good riddance to bad rubbish... Flash in the pan

Adobe finally concedes that Flash is rubbish. At least on mobile devices. And that HTML5 is the way to go.   Funny. Where have we heard that before?   I've long been using ClickToFlash (and now ClickToPlugIn) on my Mac. I can't wait for the day when Flash dies its death on the desktop, too.

Two months later...

Well, it's been over two months since my last blog entry. I was going to go for three months, but since I'll be seeing Pixar's Up sometime this week, I figured I'd be posting about that anyway, and might as well post an entry now.   Mainly it's been work that's been keeping me out of the whole blogging thing. As with last year, the end of the school year at CalArts (where I work) keeps me extremely busy.   This year, we had some 144 animated films turned in, running just under 7 hours. Putti

Spider-Man: Homecoming - Spoiler-free review

I finally got around to seeing Spider-Man: Homecoming a few days ago. I was debating whether or not to go see it because frankly, I'm a little tired of Spider-Man movies. Even though some of them had their moments, and Spider-Man himself was handled pretty well, it was Peter Parker who just never really clicked. For one thing, he was always way too old, and for another, he just wasn't very likable. Tobey Maguire played him like kind of an endlessly crying jerk, and Andrew Garfield was a tortured

May I suggest a new holiday?

How about, "Buyers' Remorse Day"?   This would follow Black Friday, where people would look back at a day wasted chasing bargains at stores, having spent more than they ever intended to (or having not found anything they wanted), and realize they could have just bought everything online instead.   To wit, the Playstation 3 Bundle.   Wal-Mart (plus Target, Sears and possibly others) is offering up a PS3 bundle. This includes a PS3, Ratchet and Clank All 4 One, and Little Big Planet 2, all f

Homebrew Art, part 1 - Climber 5 contest entries

This is the first entry in a series recounting label artwork I've created at AtariAge. In addition to labels that have been published, I'll also be posting designs I entered into contests - including the losers. This entry is from the latter category. I have a lot of these. Despite winning several contests, I've created far more losers than winners. The pictures showing the final artwork are 3D renderings (read this to find out why), which can be clicked on for larger views. Entries will be

Time Marches On

And so it's March. Where January and February went - I have no idea.   Anyway, I feel somewhat obligated to post a blog entry, just so I don't get pushed off the front page.   Music seems about as good a topic as any. As I'm working on various art projects, I like to listen to music that ties into what I'm working on. For example, if I'm working on sprites for a sci-fi game like Colony 7 or Juno First, I'll listen to sci-fi movie soundtracks. Tron works especially well for this, since it's

Toy Story 4 - Spoiler-free review

Well, that was weird.   No, not the movie. My last blog post.   Well, not the post, but the way it got posted.   It used to be, that when you posted a new blog entry, it would move to the top of the main blog page.   But mine didn't. It stayed down at the bottom, right below Eric Ball's latest entry:     The weird thing is, I posted my entry on August 10:     And Eric had posted his on July 10:

Coco - Spoiler-free review

I actually got to see Pixar's Coco at a sneak preview at work a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't write anything about it until the movie was in theaters. (I work at CalArts in the Character Animation Program, for those that haven't been following along.) It was an interesting screening, because Disney had what I could only describe as their Secret Service on hand to make sure nobody recorded anything or took pictures. Several dark-suited individuals (I don't recall but I'm almost sure they ha

Homebreviews - part 44: Arcade Assault, Vol. 1

Ever wanted your own arcade at home? Well, it's time to dust off the 7800 again and give it some much-needed lovin'. Here are three classic arcade shooters for your 7800, brought home by Bob DeCrescenzo. Astro Fighter Astro Fighter was an early vertical shoot 'em up developed by Data East. It was one of the earliest multi-stage shooters featuring different enemies and even a boss battle, pre-dating both Phoenix and Gorf. Your mission was to blast your way through four waves of enemies, the

Cheeeese!

I finally picked up Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and I have to say, it's a wonderful film!   I missed it in the theaters, but I wanted to get the DVD because I've been a fan of Nick Park's work since his Creature Comforts short. Wallace and Gromit are terrific characters, and it was great to see them in a feature-length film. And even though I don't think the Oscars usually provide any sort of real-world validity, I was glad to see this film win for best animated feature.

Homebreviews - part 7

And the reviews continue... this time it's the games of UA Limited. (Okay... so these are reproductions, not homebrews. But "Reproductionviews" just doesn't have the same ring to it.) Cat Trax, Funky Fish, Pleiades Bundle (this will include all three reviews in the store review) 2/5 Lost games from a long-forgotten company, these have been rescued from obscurity and finally released more than 20 years after they were originally written. The newly-created packaging is first-rate, but the game

Bill & Ted Face the Music - Spoiler-free review

Continuing on with the continuation of my blog (and because I've only written 5 episodes of Artie so far), it's time for the return of the Spoiler-free review!   Unfortunately, because of the Coronavirus pandemic, there aren't any movie theaters open around here. And even if there were, frankly, I wouldn't go into one right now unless the audience members were all sealed up in giant Ziploc bags and wiped down with a bleach solution, which would kind of negatively impact the whole ambie

The Sixer Fixer-upper: Part 1

So, I've been blogging again (in case you haven't noticed). I'd stopped blogging months ago due to the blog software here being a complete, hopeless mess. (This isn't a dig at AtariAge, but rather at InVision who makes the software, and absolutely ruined it during a previous "upgrade". The worst offense being the removal of categories, completely destroying anyone's ability to organize or find content.)   What started my renewed interest in blogging was when James (of ZeroPage Homebrew

One down...

I just finished the manual for Lady Bug! I think (hope) the proof-reading is all done, and I've sent it (and the label) off to Albert for printing.   It's nice to have Lady Bug done, and it's incredible how fast the game came together (it was only started in January). I think the game turned out great, and I'm amazed John was able to pack so much of the arcade game into the 2600. I hope people like the manual artwork. John likes it (which is the most important thing) and I'm quite happy with t

421 minutes

It's that time of the year again! Or rather, it was. I'm now in recovery-mode, after living through our two student Character Animation shows at CalArts. This is last year's entry, in case you haven't been following along. The first one, on April 21st, was the Open Show. Every student can submit whatever film they want that they've created during the school year. Or films. Some students make more than one. During the fall semester, some students make a one-week film as part of their classes. I
