Only 8 pixels wide

So... where was I?Well, I managed to wrap up the coloring on the Solar Plexus label. Jess posted a picture of it here.Still on my "to do" list is the last part (or two) of the label tutorial. I just need to make some time for it.The big project turned out to be the manual for the 2005 MiniGame MultiCart. Besides a tight deadline, it was like doing seven manuals in one, so it turned out to be quite a challenge to cram everything in there, without it turning into something the size of a phone book

One year later

So, I've been blogging for an entire year now.   Funny, I've got quite a few less than 365 entries. I've been a little hit and miss in terms of consistency, but I figure that it's an easy standard to live up to, so why change? So look for more of the same in the coming year!   Anyway, I've been making some progress on the Four-Play manual. I won't be able to work on it much over the next couple of days, since I'm teaching tomorrow (and still putting together tomorrow's lecture - students are

One hundred, ninety eight...

Well, who knew?   With all of the games I've been getting through AtariAge, plus a few used ones I was given by a friend of mine, my collection of Atari 2600 games has reached nearly 200 unique titles (from the 131 I originally had, back-in-the-day).   This is my 2600 Game List (36k PDF file - you'll need to zoom in to read it). It's sorted based on when I bought the games - as part of my original collection, or as a recent acquisition, with duplicates listed at the bottom.   Actually, I d

One down...

I just finished the manual for Lady Bug! I think (hope) the proof-reading is all done, and I've sent it (and the label) off to Albert for printing.   It's nice to have Lady Bug done, and it's incredible how fast the game came together (it was only started in January). I think the game turned out great, and I'm amazed John was able to pack so much of the arcade game into the 2600. I hope people like the manual artwork. John likes it (which is the most important thing) and I'm quite happy with t

One down, umpteen to go!

I think the forums are slightly wonky. First, daylight savings time hasn't kicked in yet. And second, October gained an extra day:And even though this is going to throw the Trick-or-Treaters into a tailspin, I like it. I can always use an extra day here or there.Since I wasn't really able to do any more work on RPS or the MiniGame MultiCart (pending various approvals), I decided to finish up the Solar Plexus label. Now I just need to get the Photoshop file to Jess, and that project's all wrappe

One and Only

About a month before passing away last Summer, Maynard Ferguson recorded what turned out to be his last album. It's just been released, and is now available exclusively through Maynard's website (and iTunes).     I was rather disappointed with his previous album, MF Horn VI: Live at Ronnie's. Of course, recording live albums is always hit-or-miss. However, since that album was recorded, Maynard had gotten into better shape physically, and his playing had improved dramatically, according to

Once more unto the breach

As with last year, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before, and even the year before that, (and all of the years before that before I had a blog), it's the end of the school year here at CalArts, and I've been buried in work, putting our student animation shows together. This is number 22 for me, if I'm doing the math right. No guarantees there, by the way. Last weekend... no. Ummm... wait

Once aTron a time...

Well, that was totally cool.   The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Hoozitwhatzit (the "Oscars" guys), held a screening Wednesday evening of a 70mm print of Tron at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, preceded by a panel discussion with director Steven Lisberger, VFX supervisor Richard Taylor, and animator Bill Kroyer.   They went over the laborious process of making the film (including some info I'd never heard before), a few anecdotes about the production, and talked a little ab

On Corse for the win

Man... I sure hope I can come up with enough puns for the rest of the WRC season. Anyway, Tour De Corse (Rally Corsica) was last weekend, and the unpredictability of the World Rally Championship continued! This week's fastest driver was... Elfyn Evans?! Yep! The Ford M-Sport driver was dominant most of the weekend. Even though he lost the lead in the final Saturday stage, he roared right back on Sunday and took an 11 second lead from Thierry Neuville heading into the final power stage. And

Off on a tangent

It's always interesting revisiting artwork I haven't looked at in awhile. Invariably, I see things that need to be changed that I completely missed before. Usually this happens because I was so focused on getting individual details right, that I didn't step back and look at the overall picture with an objective eye. Not seeing the forest for the trees, as it were. With the RPS label, the problem turned out to be bad tangents. It's a pretty complex line drawing with overlapping objects, and those
