Jean "Moebius" Giraud passed away Saturday, at the age of 73.
Another phenomenally gifted artist, his work graced countless comic books, science fiction and fantasy art (most notably Heavy Metal magazine), and movies including Alien, The Abyss, The Fifth Element and of course - Tron.

(I can't understand a word he's saying, but I love the fact he has a Snoopy poster on his wall. )
What's up with all the superhero movies this summer? Thor, Green Lantern, X-Men: First Class, Captain America... there's a veritable glut of 'em.
Maybe even... a super glut.
I have yet to decide if I'm going to see any of them or not. Frankly, I've never been a big fan of Thor (although if Walt Simonson were drawing the movie, I'd go see it), the previous X-Men movies have all been pretty wretched, Green Lantern looks kind of stupid (sorry GL fans... but I call 'em as I see 'em), and I h
This has been added to my "to-review" list. Thanks Richard!
What? Don't have one yet?
Well, what are you waiting for?
(Of course, to actually play with it, I'm going to need some kind of software... Darrell? )
Well, it's the eighth anniversary of my blog, and my 500th blog entry.
I've posted 162 episodes of Artie the Atari (with an updated index), 109 homebrew reviews (spread over 38 entries), about 40 movie reviews (I need to go in and fix some tags, apparently), blogged about 4 seasons of the WRC and 5 seasons of The Clone Wars. Plus I've posted a few To-Do lists, a handful of Photoshop tutorials, and the occasional rant about videogames. So I guess the rest was all filler. I'm not really sure h
Titanic in space. 4.5/10 Okay... I was really tempted to just leave the review at that, but in all fairness, I suppose I could do a little better. Passengers is the fourth film in the Gravity / The Martian / Interstellar trilogy. Don't ask me how the math works, it just does. Sometime in the very distant future, Earth is a mess, and we're now colonizing other planets to mess them up too. So... add Wall-E to that list, since that
On December 17, 2010, Disney will release Tron: Legacy.
Yes... I'm looking forward to this.
I'm posting about it now, because Disney just released a teaser poster, and a couple of publicity stills.
And so you don't have to dig them up elsewhere, and because I like to laugh in the face of "cease and desist" orders, and because I need an excuse to pull my blog back off of "Page 2"... here are the pics:

So here we go again. This time I'm sitting in a properly huge IMAX theater, waiting for the latest James Bond epic to begin. No lack of a crowd this time - being a rainy Saturday night in Burbank. The movie kicks off in about 20 minutes, and as usual I'll be back with a review after I get home.
Or maybe tomorrow.
Either way, see you after the show.

So, is Skyfall the "Best Bond Ever"?
Well, no. That would be Goldfinger. But I'll get bac
Well, I had a few more ideas for Artie's adventure with... Adventure. (Really though, how hard is it to make fun of flicker?)
So I'll be posting new episodes for the next few days. Here's part 2. Enjoy!
And speaking of cartoons... this is my new favorite website. At least for today.

Some of us skipped out of work today... I mean... took an extended lunch... to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
For an opening day, the theater was surprisingly not-that-full. Of course, being in the middle of a Thursday afternoon probably had something to do with it (also, they were showing it on three screens at the same time). And even though large opening-day crowds can be fun, it was still nice not to have to get to the theater two hours early and wait in long li
Well, it's time to start catching up on some of my reviews again. And since last week's theme seems to have been the 7800, we'll start off with four games for that system. Beef Drop VE 5/5 Beef Drop VE is an exceptional port of the classic arcade game Burgertime. You take control of a chef tasked with assembling giant hamburgers, while avoiding enemy frankfurters, pickles and fried eggs (apparently they're trying to avoid becoming your next culinary creations). Your only weapon is a pepper s
Are you in college, planning to go to college, or planning to send kids to college someday?
Don't ever, EVER take out a student loan from Sallie Mae. Be wary of any loan company that might sell your existing loans to them, as well.
They're evil. I will be well-rid of these conniving, thieving, dishonest, money-grubbing, manipulative, opportunist robber barons, the day I finally get my last loan paid off.
I don't "hate" very often, but I hate Sallie Mae.
I've come to personify the
This is a pretty cool blog entry.
Alan Kay and Bob Stein were working for Atari back in '82, and were asked to come up with some concepts for an "Intelligent Encyclopedia". They hired recent-ex-Disney artist Glenn Keane to illustrate them, and what they came up with was, well, basically what we're doing with iPads, the internet, and all that sort of stuff now.
So, I've been blogging for an entire year now.
Funny, I've got quite a few less than 365 entries. I've been a little hit and miss in terms of consistency, but I figure that it's an easy standard to live up to, so why change? So look for more of the same in the coming year!
Anyway, I've been making some progress on the Four-Play manual. I won't be able to work on it much over the next couple of days, since I'm teaching tomorrow (and still putting together tomorrow's lecture - students are
Well, since I've had a number of people* tell me that they really liked my 15th entry in the Lead contest, I thought I'd post a blog entry about it.
*That number would be "three".
This was by far the easier of the two illustrations. No 3D here. Just drawing. As always, it started out with some rough sketches. The idea I wanted to convey was a sense of speed, as the player's ship hurtled past the energy walls, and fired away at oncoming ships. So I wanted lots of streaks and blurring to g
I'm not even sure Ralph Breaks the Internet is still in theaters. I saw this back in November, but only now have had the time to write up a short review for it. Actually, I've got three movies to write reviews for, hence the need to keep them all short. What do you mean, you'll "believe it when you see it"? I don't always write needlessly long-winded, rambling, circumlocutory reviews. And yes, I did look that last one up - I felt there would be additional humor if I made a counterpoint to my
Well, it's been just about 100,000 views since this blog entry.
Time flies.
No, really it does. Einstein proved it. Or maybe he only speculated about it and never actually succeeded in formulating a viable theory about it, and then Stephen Hawking actually proved it decades later but then changed his mind about it and decided that time actually goes backwards, and we're only perceiving it as going forwards. Or something. I think they're all making all that stuff up anyway, just because t
The 2019 WRC (World Rally Championship) kicked off in Monte-Carlo this weekend, and the new season pretty-much picked up where last year left off: Sebastien Ogier just barely beat Thierry Neuville for the win, even though Ott Tänak was the fastest car on the road all weekend. Tänak was effectively out of the running due to a tire puncture early on. Still, he clawed his way back to third place, which was a pretty impressive feat to watch. Neuville himself only lost by about 2 seconds, and if not
