The Dark Knight Rises - Spoiler-free review

I'm at the theater yet again, and I've only got a few minutes before the film starts, so there's just enough time to post a super-quick pre-movie entry.   And that was it.   See you in three hours!     (Much, much later...)   You know what? I think I'm going to type this up tomorrow instead. It's late.     (The next day...)   Well, that was a long movie. And if I had to choose one word to describe it, it would probably be "tedious". It takes forever to get going, takes forever to g

Predictions for 2012

Hey, it's that time of year again. We'll get this year out of the way right away, then move onto how I did last year.   Predictions for 2012: I predict I won't make any predictions for 2012. So, I'm already either 100% right, or 100% wrong, depending on whether or not you take that prediction into account as an actual prediction.   The reason I'm not making any predictions, is that with Steve Jobs gone from Apple... they've become all-too predictable. iPad 3? Yep. iPhone 5? Yep. Killi

Episode 0

Before we get to the strip, a couple of bits of trivia: First, I didn't actually write it. Second, It makes absolutely no sense out of context.   So, here's what happened...   Back in the late 90's, there was a website I frequented called ClassicGaming.com. Long-since slurped up into the morass that is now IGN, it used to be a cool website. There was a semi-regular column titled "Game of the Week" (long before blogs, mind you), generally written by someone going by the name of "Fragmaster".

Homebreviews - part 25

So you're on a long road trip and the kids are in the back seat jumping up and down yelling "Are we there yet?" Well, what can you give them to keep 'em busy? Why, card games and puzzles, of course! Poker Squares 3/5 Poker Squares is a solitaire version of poker, where your goal is to create the best five-card poker hands vertically, horizontally and diagonally, within a five-by-five grid. The more and better hands you can create, the higher your score. If this sounds familiar, then you may

The right way to do it

So... if you had a bunch of money, how cool would it be to gather up a bunch of the best programmers from the classic arcade era, and hire them to make new games?   You know... like Ed Rotberg (Battlezone), Owen Rubin (Major Havoc, Space Duel), Rich Adam (Gravitar, Missile Command), Ed Logg (Asteroids, Centipede), Tim Skelly (Rip-Off, Armor Attack, Reactor), Bruce Merrit (Black Widow) and Dennis Koble (Atlantis, Solar Storm)?   Well, some guy just did that. Seamus Blackley, one of the co-cre

Encavedavators Amiss

Recently, I had the good fortune to win the Elevators Amiss label contest. I say good fortune, because in addition to some really good labels from other entrants, I was having no luck coming up with an idea for the label, until the last day of the contest. Finally, the idea of having the maid falling into the elevator shaft and clinging onto the cable struck me, and after a half-dozen sketches, I finally came up with this one:     There are a few things that are kind of odd about the sketch

Too weird, apparently

Lady Gaga (who I've managed to largely ignore) is weird.   I think that's a pretty safe statement.   "Weird Al" Yankovic is also weird. But "Weird Al" is "funny" weird, rather than "don't let her near your cat" weird.   But now, apparently, "Weird Al" is too weird for Lady Gaga.   You can read the whole story in "Weird Al's" blog.   In short though, Al decided to do a parody of Lady Gaga. Admittedly, this is sort of like saying "the sky is blue", and for that reason, Al avoided doing a

It's only Fair

Back on December 9th... I showed up to work (the Character Animation program at CalArts - by the way, isn't that just about the worst website you've ever seen? Yes it is.) only to find the hallways abuzz with all sorts of lighting equipment, people I didn't recognize, cases full of gear and… alumni. Now, alumni aren't unusual around CalArts. A bunch of them teach there. We see them during the year as guest lecturers. But this was different in the sheer quantity of them. Feature film director

Avengers: Endgame - Spoiler-free review

If you go to the theater late enough at night... you can still get tickets to Avengers: Endgame. Which I did - going to a 10:45 PM showing last night. Mainly because I wanted to avoid spoilers, and the way articles and videos were popping up all over the internet about the movie, I figured time was running out. (I even ran across what turned out to be an incorrect spoiler watching a ZeroPage Twitch stream the other week. So nowhere is safe. Idiots who think they're funny or just want to ruin t

Pixar's best?

I just went and saw Disney's Pixar's Ratatouille last night.   Even though Surf's Up was a good movie... Ratatouille is a great one. It's an order of magnitude better than anything else out there. (Sorry, Jeff.)   Pixar has set a new standard for animated films. Not merely CG animated films, but animated films, period. The animation is absolutely incredible, and would be, regardless of the medium. Computers do not make animation this good - people do. Pixar has the best animators, and in Bra

Homebrew Art, part 8 - 2005 MiniGame MultiCart

2005 MiniGame MultiCart (2005)     The 2005 MiniGame MultiCart - my second for-hire label - is a collection of mini-games. When I say "for-hire", I should probably point out that I get paid in store credit or homebrews. I don't ask for money or royalties. From my standpoint, this is still a hobby. If it starts crossing the line into work, then I need to step back from it. This has happened a few times, and as a result I'm more selective about the projects I take on now.   By a wide margin

Blog Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again?

Peter Tork passed away last week at the all-too-young age of 77. I didn't used to think 77 was young. But the older I get, and the more people I know who live and live well in their 80's and even 90's, 77 seems too young. Peter played the bass player on the TV show The Monkees (returning soon to MeTV). Peter also played bass in the band The Monkees. And . And . And . And . Of the four members of the group, Tork was easily the most musically accomplished. But on the TV show, he played
