On Corse for the win

Man... I sure hope I can come up with enough puns for the rest of the WRC season. Anyway, Tour De Corse (Rally Corsica) was last weekend, and the unpredictability of the World Rally Championship continued! This week's fastest driver was... Elfyn Evans?! Yep! The Ford M-Sport driver was dominant most of the weekend. Even though he lost the lead in the final Saturday stage, he roared right back on Sunday and took an 11 second lead from Thierry Neuville heading into the final power stage. And

Mega-Late

So, I finally got around to seeing DreamWorks' MegaMind.   Last week.   Yeah, I was a little late with that, and then forgot that I'd watched it, so I'm late writing the review, too.   Anyway, MegaMind is DreamWorks' take on the superhero genre.   You know... like Pixar did a few years ago with The Incredibles.   Sort of like how Pixar did Toy Story, then DreamWorks did Small Soldiers.   Or how Pixar did A Bug's Life, and DreamWorks did Antz.   Or how Pixar did Finding Nemo, and

The Sixer Fixer-upper: Part 3

And now... the conclusion of my 2600 repair blog thing!   Or rather, the conclusion of this particular 2600's repair. Oooo... foreshadowing!   If you're looking for Part 1 or Part 2, well, there are links to them around here somewhere.     With the holes repaired, it was finally time to put everything back together. As with James' console, I wrapped the wires around the front of the board, and underneath it. Flat-taping them together, and using a little unshrunk hea

To Do, To Do, Doo Be Doo Be Doo

Why yes, I am running out of "To Do" titles for my blog entries. Thanks for asking.   Well, I'm gradually chipping away at my "To-Do" list. Although there are two more projects added to it now: Label and manual for Lady Bug - In progress. John has approved a couple of design ideas for me to take to the next step. Manual for Four-Play - The label is already done, so the cover for the manual is basically done, too. Incidentally, I'm still working on new illustrations for RPS. Not su

Homebreviews - part 24

What did we ever do to outer-space? They're always trying to bring us down with their interplanetary attacks and endless hoards of invading aliens! Buncha jerks... (Personally... I think they're after our CheeseKorn.) Backfire 4/5 In most "shoot the aliens before they reach you and destroy you" games, you're completely outnumbered by the enemy. But in Backfire, you have two cannons at your disposal, and only one enemy attacking which never even fires a shot. Sound easy? Well, you're more lik

Movie review - The Muppets

Well, I was going to try and write this one in five minutes as I did with the Mission Impossible review, but well, that didn't quite work out. So that means you get to do more reading. Lucky you!   I loved The Muppet Show as a kid. It was irreverent, wacky, fun, silly, sly, adult, childish, and brilliant.   I went and saw the first Muppet Movie in the theaters, and while that captured some of the feel of the show, it somehow fell short. I think I saw The Muppets Take Manhattan, but I honestl

Incoming! part 2

When we last left my Incoming! contest entry, I decided it needed a little something extra - an explosion!   The original artwork had the tank dropping into the scene, and bouncing off the sand dune. Since the tank was already in the air, and pieces were falling off of it, it lent itself very well to having an explosion underneath it, without having to do much additional work.   Painting an explosion is something it took me awhile to figure out. Once in awhile I'd manage to put one together

Seattle Icons

I'm originally from Seattle, and will always consider it home. So I was saddened to read about the passing of a Seattle icon - J.P. Patches.   J.P. (actually Chris Wedes) was a staple on Seattle-area TV from 1958 to 1981, hosting a locally produced live kids' TV show. What made J.P. a Seattle icon was that his show was actually funny. Sure, he was dressed as a clown, who are almost never funny (see: Bozo, Ronald McDonald, etc.), but this show was different. It was full of goofy characters (J.P

The (almost) return of Starcade

As I'd pointed out in the comments of this blog entry (it'd be really nice if there were a way to link directly to a particular comment... ), the once-great Starcade video arcade at Disneyland had become a sad shadow of its former self. Back in the early 80's, it was an amazing arcade, jammed full of video games, spanning two floors.   When Disney released Tron: Legacy, they opened up Flynn's Arcade as part of ElecTRONica in California Adventure. I never managed to get over and see it though,

Homebreviews - part 26

I never reviewed this one, but I meant to...     AtariVox USB Interface 4/5   The AtariVox USB Interface allows you to hook up an AtariVox Speech Synthesizer to your computer via USB cable. This is absolutely essential for developing AtariVox speech and sounds for Atari 2600 homebrews. The interface lets you use programs like Phrase-A-Lator to develop your audio and be able to hear it played directly through the AtariVox. Perhaps even more important - it allows the AtariVox to work with e

24 years later

Yep. Another album review.   I've been waiting for this one to come out on CD since, well, since CDs first came out.   Why some albums take forever to come out on CD is beyond me, but better late than never.   In this case though, it's not just one album... but two!     MF Horn 3 and MF Horn 4 & 5: Live at Jimmy's by Maynard Ferguson. This finally completes the CD release of all of his Columbia albums.   Now, not all of the work he did while he was with Columbia was all that gre

George never did explain that

Disclaimer: No cartoon 2600s were harmed in the making of this episode. However, we did burn up a bunch of real ones just to see what it looked like.   98 < PreviousIndexNext >

Minions - Spoiler-free movie review

Okay... I had no plans to see Minions, but when your impossibly adorable niece wants to go see a movie, how can you say "no"? Plus, I went to CalArts with one of the directors.   So, we saw Minions. She loved it.   For me, not so much.   The Minions are fine in small doses as comedy relief, but their incomprehensible gibberish wears pretty thin after a few minutes (much less an entire feature). Also, the plot is really flimsy and contrived, and is just there to hang some jokes off of. Even
