Here's why I like label contests...
They allow me to just do whatever I want, and not worry about someone else liking it or not.
Now that's not to say I don't want the programmer to like it, or that I don't get to do what I want with labels-for-hire. Quite the contrary. Of course I'd like to win the contest, and as for the other, I'm generally given pretty-much free reign when asked to design labels.
Mostly...
But contests just let me play around without any pressure. I can tr
I recently bought several Sony video presentation stands off eBay for work.
As with any eBay purchases, the results were a bit hit-and-miss, especially when it came to packing and shipping. One of the stands was so poorly packed that the camera had broken off, and an entire corner of the base had broken off.
Fortunately, all of the electronics still worked, so with a judicious application of J-B Weld PlasticWeld epoxy, I was able to repair the damage and getting a working stand out
So I went to see Frozen a few days ago. Opening week, Black Friday, afternoon matinee, packed house, tons of kids. Now I've been in movie theaters before with lots of kids, and if the movie doesn't completely hold their attention, it's a miserable place to be. They get restless and bored, never sit still, and never stop talking. If a movie is too complex for them to follow, they never stop asking questions. If it's too scary for real little kids (and the parents too irresponsible to recognize th
Remember the movie Escape from New York?
Near the end of the film, there's a scene where Kurt Russell and everyone is running through the lobby of the World Trade Center.
That was actually shot where I work - at CalArts, in the Main Gallery. The only thing I'm not sure of, is if they made it messier for the movie, or cleaned it up for the movie. (That's a CalArts joke... )
Anyway, it's 3:50 AM Sunday as I'm starting this blog entry. I just got home from the Character Animation Open S
Well, I just wrapped up the end-of-year shows for the Character Animation Program at CalArts. Again.
For the 18th year in a row.
And I feel like I've been sleep-deprived for 18 straight years, although it's really only been 3 1/2 weeks. But it's been a long 3 1/2 weeks, with no weekends off, a bunch of 12-hour days, and at least a couple of 18-hour ones thrown in for good measure.
I stayed home today, and mostly slept.
Our full show (the Open Show) was on April 28th, was about 6
This years' showcase of student films from where I work has just been posted on our school's website.
This is about 2 hours and 15 minutes (2 hours, 43 minutes Canadian) of the best films from the Character Animation program, as selected by our faculty. The entire Character Animation student show (which is not online) ran a whopping 7 hours 30 minutes this year. While there were some films that I think should've make it into the showcase that didn't, I think this is a pretty good representat
Thanks to Albert, my blog is fixed!
He was able to update the AA database to re-link all of my image files to their new server. Very cool.
This also fixes all of the linked images that I've left scattered throughout the rest of the forums as well. So it's nice to have all of that taken care of. Thanks Albert!
And, all of this is just in time to show a sneak-peek at the label I just finished for Batari's Gingerbread Man!
Enjoy!
By sheer coincidence, on Tuesday's episode of ZeroPage Homebew, James posted a poll asking if people used a video mod or stock RF to output video from their 2600s. Overwhelmingly, people answered RF. So the timing of this blog post is pretty good, since I've been working on this particular entry for well over a week.
RF tends to have a bad rap with the Atari 2600. It's the standard connection between your console and TV, and was designed for a time when the only input that TVs had wa
So I'm working on a few labels for homebrews. Well, three homebrews and one reproduction. But the reproduction might as well be a homebrew, because there's no established precedent for its artwork, so we (Dave Dries and I) can just do whatever we want.
Anyway... so I've started sketching and looking through art books for inspiration, and as happens quite often with artwork, I hate pretty-much everything I'm drawing.
It happens. It's a frustration which stems from not being able to draw o
It's been awhile since I posted some Photoshop hints, so I thought while I was finishing up the Gingerbread Man manual (Gingerbread Man-ual?) it was as good of a time as any.
The more I draw, the more I keep exploring different ways to draw. In the last year or so, I've really gotten back into drawing on paper, as opposed to starting off in the computer. Using paper and pencil is just infinitely more manipulatable than even the best computer drawings programs. I still use computers for what
