Episode 0

Before we get to the strip, a couple of bits of trivia: First, I didn't actually write it. Second, It makes absolutely no sense out of context.   So, here's what happened...   Back in the late 90's, there was a website I frequented called ClassicGaming.com. Long-since slurped up into the morass that is now IGN, it used to be a cool website. There was a semi-regular column titled "Game of the Week" (long before blogs, mind you), generally written by someone going by the name of "Fragmaster".

Encavedavators Amiss

Recently, I had the good fortune to win the Elevators Amiss label contest. I say good fortune, because in addition to some really good labels from other entrants, I was having no luck coming up with an idea for the label, until the last day of the contest. Finally, the idea of having the maid falling into the elevator shaft and clinging onto the cable struck me, and after a half-dozen sketches, I finally came up with this one:     There are a few things that are kind of odd about the sketch

eBay splurge

With Pong being prominently mentioned in a couple of forum threads recently, I just had to pick up a Pong console off eBay... I wanted one of the Sears Tele-Games models, because those were the first ones sold (I have no idea of this one's actual manufacturing date however). This one is in amazing condition, especially considering its age. It works perfectly fine, there's almost no wear to speak of, and it just needed a little TLC with some Windex and a toothbrush to clean it up. The left

Draggin' Along

I finally wrapped up my contest entry for Medieval Mayhem, and sent it off to Albert.   I spent quite a lot of time on this one, and it'll likely be my only entry (well... three entries, one illustration).   This is the pencil drawing. Actually, it's a composite of four pencil drawings: the dragon, the castles on their hilltops, the mountain range and clouds, and the knight up on the wall:     The knight was actually a last-minute addition. My other (abandoned) idea was going to use a k

Down on the farm

Today is National Popcorn Day!   I'm ashamed to admit, I wasn't aware of this until a couple of hours ago.   There are few things I like better than good popcorn. All of that fake-butter-soaked microwave crud is not good popcorn. About the only microwave stuff I like is Jolly Time's Crispy 'n' White Light. It actually tastes like popcorn... not chemicals.   No sir... I like my popcorn soaked in real butter. (Well, not soaked... but certainly well-drizzled.) Hey - indulge in moderation, rig

Don't bother

Well... it's not exactly what Dave was looking for...     One of my current favorite TV series is BBC's Top Gear.   On the surface, it appears to just be a show about cars. But actually, it's a show about the three hosts - Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond - and how these three very different (and funny) personalities interact with each other while talking about cars, arguing about cars, driving cars, showing a genuine passion for cars, and doing idiotic (and sometimes amazi

Doctor Strange - Spoiler-free movie review

I needed some escapism the other night. I had already voted, so I was pretty-much done with the whole election thing at that point, and really didn't want to sit around and watch the returns on TV for the next several hours. So I decided to go out and see Doctor Strange. Even though I never followed the character back when I read comics, and really didn't care about the more mystical/fantastical aspects of the Marvel Universe, the trailers looked kind of cool. And Benedict Cumberbatch was qu

Disney gets something right

Just to provide a balanced counterpoint to yesterday's post, there is proof Disney isn't entirely evil. (And of course, there's always Wreck-It Ralph. Now on Blu-ray!)   They're producing new Mickey Mouse shorts, and by the look of the first one... they've actually got it right.   A funny Mickey Mouse short... who'da thunk?

Disney embraces the Dark Side

If you've been reading my blog, you'll know I've been following The Clone Wars animated series pretty closely since it started. It's had its hits and misses over five seasons, but in practical fact it's been nothing short of a milestone both in terms of TV animation, and theatrical-level CG work in a TV series.   It's also done something I didn't think possible - made me care about the prequel-era Star Wars universe and characters.   At the end of season 5, Over the course of the series

Cos and effect

Well, the San Diego Comic Con happened recently. One of these days, I must really go and see it. Not because I'm into comic books (I was cured of that particular disease years ago), but because of the whole spectacle of the thing.   Yes... I'm talking about Cosplay again.   This is what happens when Gorfs intermarry   There's a rather impressive bevy of barely bedecked babes, people who've packed on ponderous poundage, comedic creative costuming, and just some stuff that you have to see

Congratulations, Albert!

No doubt thanks to all of the hard work he puts into AtariAge, and his upcoming attendance at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, he is this week's App of the week!   Download him now, while he's still free!

Colony 7 Sprites

Okay, I think I have all of the sprites done for Colony 7. It took a little time to rip the ones from the original arcade game in MAME, but thanks to Snapz Pro X 2, I can capture movies of anything on my Mac. Then it's just a matter of taking the individual frames I need, and importing them into ImageReady, so I can see them as animation.Like this:(enlarged to 300%)The Advisor doesn't do much, does it? Although really, how much action can you expect from an Advisor? Those were pretty easy to capt
