I actually got to see Pixar's Coco at a sneak preview at work a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't write anything about it until the movie was in theaters. (I work at CalArts in the Character Animation Program, for those that haven't been following along.) It was an interesting screening, because Disney had what I could only describe as their Secret Service on hand to make sure nobody recorded anything or took pictures. Several dark-suited individuals (I don't recall but I'm almost sure they ha
Season 3 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars kicked off a few weeks ago, although I've been too busy to either a) watch all of the episodes or b) write about them, until now.
Last season, the series really began to mature, and it grew on me quite a bit. The characters had more depth, the plots were better, and the production values and quality of the animation increased.
Season 3 started off with more of a whimper than a bang, but it has already had some high points.
The whimper was because
Reindeer Rescue Wrap-upWell, it looks like Bob is done programming Reindeer Rescue. I think the game turned out great, and people are gonna love it! It's already climbed up to the fourth best-selling homebrew of all-time in the AtariAge store. That's pretty amazing! (The fact that it can be had for free may have had a little to do with that... nah. )It was a lot of fun creating the sprites and other in-game graphics for it. I want to thank Bob for inviting me to be part of the project, and givi
Well, if it works for Charlie Brown and the Grinch...
I figured since Stay Frosty 2 and the AtariVox+ are now in the AtariAge store, this would be a good time to rerun this strip. All I'm missing are the commercials for Dolly Madison.
And in case you're wondering, yes - Artie has been modded so he can run Stay Frosty 2.
Merry Christmas!

Depending on which list you go by, 20 years is either symbolized by gifts of china or platinum.
China, as in plates and stuff. Not necessarily things made in China. Although I'm sure you could easily enough find china made in China, thereby removing any sort of potential confusion.
Except for the whole platinum thing, which doesn't really make sense since it's actually more valuable than silver or gold, so shouldn't it be up higher? Like 75 or something?
Anyway… 20 years. That's how
Davy Jones passed away at 66 today.
I'll admit it - I'm a Monkees fan. As a kid, I grew up watching syndicated reruns of the show in the mid-70's. It was silly, irreverent, had fun music, broke the fourth wall, and was an enjoyable guilty pleasure, just like other favorites of my youth - Batman and Gilligan's Island. Silliness for silliness' sake.
The music was a huge part of the show, although I didn't think of it as anything but part of the show at the time. I had a little tape recorde
I finally picked up Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and I have to say, it's a wonderful film!
I missed it in the theaters, but I wanted to get the DVD because I've been a fan of Nick Park's work since his Creature Comforts short. Wallace and Gromit are terrific characters, and it was great to see them in a feature-length film. And even though I don't think the Oscars usually provide any sort of real-world validity, I was glad to see this film win for best animated feature.
In my Cave In review, I'd mentioned that I'd made maps of the game to work my way through it.
I completely neglected to post them, and I was recently asked to, so here they are. There's a non-spoiler version which is just a map of the main caves. It can help you get around from place to place easier, but won't show the hidden areas:
cave-in-map-no-spoilers.pdf
And there's also a spoiler version, which shows the entire cave, plus has labels showing where everything is located: cave-in
The first Cars movie wasn't Pixar's best. Oddly enough, after playing the PS2 game, I began to like the characters more, and therefore, I began to like the film more.
I don't think that's going to work this time.
Cars 2 isn't Pixar's worst film - that dubious honor still belongs to A Bug's Life - but it's certainly their second-worst. After more thoughtful efforts like Wall-E and Up, and the funny yet emotionally touching Toy Story 3, Cars 2 is a huge step backwards for the studio. The e
Despite the blog title, Cars isn't really a boring film.
Unless you're a little kid. Say, under 5. Maybe 7. Not having kids, it's a little hard for me to judge at what point stuff becomes boring for them (and it's been a lonnng time since I was 7). But based on kids in the audience (one of whom repeatedly kept asking "is it over yet"?), I don't think bringing really little kids to this film is a good idea.
I went to see Cars last week, and I have to admit, it's a much better film than I
In previous years, I've posted about our end-of-school-year student film screenings for the Character Animation Program at CalArts (my day job, when I'm not working on homebrews).

I really liked the way the 2600 I drew for my avatar turned out, so I decided to see what else I could do with it.
Here are a couple of illustrations I did for an AtariAge flyer, which Albert is packing in with shipments from the AA store.
They're black and white since, well, they get printed in black and white.
Feel free to make up your own captions.
The trailer for Cars 2 has been released:

It looks pretty good. I'll admit I was skeptical about Cars 2, since contrary to most Pixar films (where they put story first), I'd heard reports that Cars 2 was green-lit and scheduled before a story was even in place.
Why would Pixar do that?
Simple.
The Cars franchise pulls in some 2 billion dollars a year in merchandising.
Two. Billion.
With a "B".
Now, the idea of a spy story
Marvel has a knack for making superhero movies. And by knack, I mean they've pretty-much got it figured out. Of course, when you think about it, they probably should by now. But nothing is a given. I should note here I'm talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, not Marvel movies made by Sony or 20th Century Fox. Those have been, at best, inconsistent. If you think about how many truly bad superhero movies there are out there, it's impressive that Marvel Studios really hasn't

Sitting in a theater with just two other people (two more went to get snacks) waiting for the 11:00 PM show to start. I'd planned to go to the 10:00, but didn't get out of work in time. So stay tuned for the review - coming later tonight! Looking forward to the film. The reviews have been really positive. I guess I'll know in just over two hours.
Hey - two more people! We've got a crowd! Time to post this, then shut 'er down.
8 movie trailers and two-plus hours later…
I'm just about to head off for a late-night show at the ArcLight. I'll be posting a review either much later tonight, or in all likelihood, tomorrow. I hadn't quite planned on going to see the movie this soon, but it's getting really difficult to avoid spoilers. I've really been looking forward to this movie, since Winter Soldier was so good. But on the other hand, Age of Ultron was quite a disappointment, so I have no idea how this will turn out. Except, of course, that it will be much be
By now, probably the whole planet knows that Steve Jobs passed away today, at the entirely-too-young age of 56.
For the man who brought Apple back from the brink to turn it into one of the most powerful companies in the world, there was no miraculous turnaround for himself.
Obituaries describing his life are everywhere. This one is as good as any. It will be interesting to read his biography, when it comes out later.
What made Steve Jobs interesting to me though, was that he made pro
