WarGames

After years of searching, I finally found the WarGames soundtrack on CD.   While the soundtrack never did have an official, commercial release, a limited production run of promotional CDs was made, and I managed to locate one.   A complete review of it is now up on my website - MacMAME.net - in the Reviews section.   Enjoy!

Wait a minute... I was right?

Well, I wasn't exactly "right" about Disney buying Pixar, since I thought that it was an outside long shot at best: But essentially, that's what happened today. I think someone's gonna owe me a steak. (Hi Frank!) As I mentioned in my previous blog entry about this, I figured the only way Pixar would make this deal is if they took over creative control of Disney Feature Animation, and much to my surprise, Disney agreed to pretty much that.According to the press release: Now exactly what

W(ogie)RC

And so… another year brings another season of the World Rally Championship.   Uh… is anyone watching this anymore?   Anyone?   It's been just one guy named Sebastien winning everything after another. First Loeb, now Ogier. Particularly impressive last year though was how dominant Ogier was in a brand new car, on a brand new team. Not just new to him, but VW was an all-new team, period. Admittedly, he had about a year of development time in the car beforehand, but that wasn't in competition

VWRC

And so, the 2013 World Rally Championship (WRC) season is underway.   Actually, it started last month, but since it was basically a repeat of everything that happened last year, I didn't bother writing it up.   Sebastien Loeb won, Jarri-Matti Latvala crashed out, Mikko Hirvonen couldn't find a good pace, and Mads Ostberg was fast, but not fast enough for a podium. And VW came in second.   Wait... what?   Oh right... that.   Other than the results largely appearing the same, everything

Vs. Vs. Golf

About a year-and-a-half ago, I posted about getting my best-ever score in Vs. Golf in MAME: 16 under par. Since then, I've kept playing and have gotten back to that score and near it quite a few times. But 18 under eluded me. I'd always have one or two bad shots that kept me from reaching it. I also started playing the Women's Vs. Golf ROM as well. If anything, I think the course is trickier. Part of that might be due to unfamiliarity with it. But it did help me practice and get better overall

Vs. Golf

Pro golfers are complaining that the 16th hole at the U.S. Open is too long at 670 yards. I have a solution for this problem.     Dear pro golfers,   I hate to be the one to break the news to you... but you are getting paid millions of dollars to play golf.   Shut up, go play your game, collect your massive paychecks, and stop whining about it.   Sincerely,   Everyone in the world who will work their entire lives and never make as much money as you will this weekend

Vroom-vroom!

Yet more mini-arcade action! This time, it's all about racing games:   Pole Position actually has a tiny little steering wheel... but it's actually just a steering wheel shaped joystick. No analog controls. Although for this version, analog isn't really needed. You also don't need to shift, the buttons just accelerate and brake, but really, adding shifting to something this small would be a little ridiculous. (Get it? A little ridiculous?  ) It's hard to justify being picky on

Using 3D for reference

It's been awhile since I posted a "making of" for label artwork. Mainly because there hasn't been anything released in quite awhile, so there hasn't been anything to share. (There are a couple of labels I've been working on, but until those games are released, the art will have to stay under wraps.) However, since the Lead contest just wrapped up, I can show some of the steps in making one of the illustrations I did for that.   Originally, my concept was to have a group of alien pilots standin

Use The Force, Artie!

Here's a bonus episode of Artie:       I probably put too much work into some of the details. This stuff never gets seen, but it'd bug me if it wasn't there:     (And just in case you don't get the punchline...)   6 < PreviousIndexNext >

Upping the ante

So many potential "Up" puns... but I had to pick just one for this entry's title. Such is life.   I finally managed to get out and see Up today, in glorious 2-D! Hey... it was an Imax theater (although not an Imax print), so at least the screen was huge. But we decided as a group that our past experiences with 3-D weren't worth the extra five bucks. Maybe it would have been, since I certainly would have paid more to see Up if I'd had to. (Although after getting lunch first, then tickets and a

Unfiltered noise

What are meetings good for?   Sketching, of course!   Some of my favorite drawings have come in the form of spur-of-the-moment little sketches that I've done while waiting for meetings to end.   I'd been thinking about Fred's SuperBug game on the 2600, and started sketching VW bugs. I don't know if he's planning a contest for the label or not, but I hope so. I've loved drawing cars since I was a kid, and the bug is probably the most fun car to draw, from a cartoonist's perspective.   So

Two very empty islands...

The world of entertainment lost two legends this week...   Ricardo Montalban passed away at 88.   Patrick McGoohan passed away at 80.   To me, Ricardo Montalban will best be remembered as Khan. Coincidentally, I watched Star Trek II last night - it was showing in HD on U-Verse's "free preview" week - and I relished his performance. He was the only villain to really match Kirk's bravado. Space opera at its finest. Most articles today I've seen refer to his stint on Fantasy Island. Of course

Two months later...

Well, it's been over two months since my last blog entry. I was going to go for three months, but since I'll be seeing Pixar's Up sometime this week, I figured I'd be posting about that anyway, and might as well post an entry now.   Mainly it's been work that's been keeping me out of the whole blogging thing. As with last year, the end of the school year at CalArts (where I work) keeps me extremely busy.   This year, we had some 144 animated films turned in, running just under 7 hours. Putti

Two hundred episodes!

(As always, click to enlarge, or click here for full-size, super-huge version) (1.3 MB)   To commemorate Artie's 200th episode, I've gone back through every single episode and added "Previous" "Index" and "Next" links. Go on - try 'em out! It's fun!   < PreviousIndexNext >   Sure, that was a lot of work, but it was still easier than trying to come up with something actually... you know... funny.   Anyway, this will make it easier to go back and read
