As normal as it gets

For the past two years, our annual student film screenings for the Character Animation Program at CalArts haven't happened. At least not in person. (For those reading this in the inevitable, distant, dystopian FUTURE and may have no knowledge of what happened in 2020 - this was due to a worldwide outbreak of e-coli brought about by some undercooked Chicken McNuggets at McDonald's. For those who don't know what Chicken McNuggets were, they were "extra parts" genetically engineered and grafted ont

Artie the Atari - The Lost Episodes

Okay... these aren't so much "lost" as "procrastinated".   I had written and nearly completed these strips almost two years ago, as the conclusion to the "100th episode spectacular" storyline.   To recap: consoles began mysteriously disappearing. It turned out that Evil Artie was responsible, having assembled a massive army of zombie E.T. cartridges from the Alamogordo, New Mexico landfill. What was Evil Artie's plan? Where was he taking his army? What happened to all of the

Artie the Atari - the (in)complete index

As Artie the Atari grinds its way towards its 150th episode, I decided to put an index together of all of the episodes to date. Someday, I'd like to annotate and collect them all into a PDF or iBook, but that may have to wait until episode 300. (Note: since writing that I've gone well past the 300th episode. Still thinking "someday" for the book. ) I'll periodically update the index as new episodes are added. 2007 The first strips! Artie's flickering Adventure: Stripping

Arrival - Spoiler-free movie review

Even though it had... appeared? ...been released? ...shown up? ...landed? No... that's not the word I'm looking for... Anyway, even though Arrival first came out in movie theaters back in November, it took me until a little over a week ago to finally see it. Much to my surprise, there were still quite a few theaters (in the Seattle area) showing it, and there were actually more people in the theater seeing Arrival, than when I'd seen Passengers a few days before, despite Passengers being a

Apple's next cloud service

So on Monday at the WWDC, amongst a spate of ho-hum announcements, Apple announced their forthcoming Documents in the cloud feature for OS X Spotted Ocelot, or whatever.   But here, and here only (unless someone else already thought of this) is the scoop on Apple's next big cloud service:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQpsckFdiMo

Ant-Man and The Wasp - Spoiler-free review

I really liked the first Ant-Man movie. I thought its light-humored approach and small scale (no pun intended) was a nice change from the overly-busy mess that was Avengers: Age of Ultron. And while I thought Avengers: Infinity War was excellent (in fact, it was the first movie in quite a few years I've seen more than once in the theater), it was kind of exhausting. I left the theater feeling like I'd just been out running. Admittedly, I could stand to exercise more... Ant-Man and The Wasp

Ant-Man - Spoiler-free movie review

Ant-Man? Really? I thought Marvel was scraping the bottom of a pretty low barrel when they dusted off Guardians of the Galaxy and turned that into a movie... but Ant-Man? Then again... Guardians of the Galaxy turned out pretty well. Oddly enough, so did Ant-Man. Better than Age of Ultron, certainly. And as far as Marvel solo movies go, I'd put this right up there after Iron Man and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The reason it works so well, simply put, are the characters. Paul Ru

Another small diversion

More fun with really tiny arcade games... Super Impulse just released Galaga, Dig Dug and Frogger, as part of their Tiny Arcade series. I have the first four and really liked them, so as soon as these showed up on Amazon, I grabbed them. I suppose if I would've waited, the price would've dropped. But I've been bitten by the collector bug with these. Can you blame me? Check this out: Seven classic arcade cabinets, all in a space only 11 1/2" wide. And no refrigerator dolly needed. As incr

Another Pleasant Valley To-do List

So... it's been another two years since the last list. Stuff has been happening, I just haven't posted updates in awhile. So I thought this would be a good time to reboot the list again. Clean out the old stuff. Donate unused items to Goodwill. That sort of thing. Latest updates are in red. Homebrews in development: Zeviouz (was "Starts with a 'Z'")* Game graphics: In progress. Development status: Active development. 5-9-20: New homebrew project. 5-23-20: First

Another new toy

This has been added to my "to-review" list. Thanks Richard!     What? Don't have one yet?   Well, what are you waiting for?   (Of course, to actually play with it, I'm going to need some kind of software... Darrell? )

Another mouth to feed...

So, I finally bought a PlayStation 3.   I had planned to do so a year ago on Black Friday, but just didn't want to deal with the insanity of fighting people at stores for one, and all of the online deals sold out before I could get to them.   This year though... I had a plan!   I was going to camp out on Amazon, and snag one in a Lightning Deal™. I knew when their PS3 bundle was going on sale - all I had to do was just log on a little early, refresh the page until the deal showed up, and b

Announcing... The Countdown!

After an absence of 6 1/2 months...   The moment you - faithful readers of this blog - have been waiting for!   Even if you weren't aware of the fact that you were waiting for it, it's coming anyway!   Like it, or not!   Want it, or not!   The time is nearly here, for the biggest single event to ever hit this particular blog so far this entire year!!   (Drum roll, please.)         (Hello? Drum guy?)         (Okay. Forget the drum.)     Anyway...   Artie the Atari will
